It is one of my favorite films as well and one of my favorite songs too - and yes, I was deeply saddened as well when I learned that the song was "inspired" by the Shadows. It is what it is, but still a great soundtrack and Anand-Milind won the award for this film that year.
Did you know that Aamir Khan's brother was launched a few years later in a film called Madhosh and they tried to repeat everything - feuding families, lovers forced to elope - ending was not as tragic. Anand-Milind composed another fantastic soundtrack for that film too. Unfortunately, both the film and the music failed this time. DO check out the songs though. Although not popular, they are really good.

Unfortunately not entirely original, copied from Return to the Alamo by The Shadows. Usually I don't mind all these foreign "inspirations" in Indian films - part of fun and charm. But this time I was rather disappointed, since I liked this song so much
