Thanks for this series on algae and how to deal with it. I've been using DIY Co2 as per your video from a while ago and it's made a massive difference to the plants that I'm growing in my first aquarium. Along with the growth of plants I also got a ton of green hair algae and some green spot algae. Water changes and scraping it off and suctioning it off has really helped. Thanks for all your work.
Great informative video! I did have issues with bga when I first set up my 9 gallon fluval flex! It kept appearing on my sand foreground! I actually saw one of my amanos eating it! It eventually went away shortly after I started dosing ferts! I haven’t seen it since! Looking forward to the next green spot algae video since I have just a few spots of it on my anubius nana petite! Thought the amanos and horned nerites would’ve taken care of it but nope! Haha
For my the main reason is waterflow. I tested one tank with flow vs 1 tank without flow . after 1 week without flow the substrate (fine sand) Cyano patches grow day by day. After i put a flowpump in the tank after a view days the cyanos are completly removed !
I hard it can be caused by lack of oxygen so i added a powerhead with air line and it went away over night 🙂🙂 think i got lucky It was in the beging and just saw it form some on the sand .
Hey so if i do the blackout method, wouldnt it harm all my plants? Love your videos 💚 6 months in and only one out of my 3 tanks has problems with BGA 😬
great videos. I just wanted to add some points about using anti biotics.first when you use antibiotics you have to make sure to get rid of it because it can get toxic after two days.using activated charcoal and a huge water change helps with that.another point is that antibiotics will kill nitrifying bacteria too. so if you use anti biotics, after changing water and removing traces of the antibiotic, you have to cycle your tank again.
hi.. not correct. All antibiotics have specific targets and don’t destroy “all bacteria”. The most simple example is there are antibiotics that target gram positive bacteria, which won’t affect gram negative bacteria.. in any case, the antibiotic that is used to target cyano does NOT affect nitrifying bacteria. There is no need to cycle the tank again
Hello! I keep my acquarium during 2 years and I can’t get bga away. I’ve changed 3 different substrates. Now I have jbl neutral substrate. 😭 I have no3 about 5 mg/l now. And my test is saying that I have almost po4 = 0. Why do I have them? I have lot of co2, ph=6,8
Has using Nitrogen Fertilizer ever proven to be true? Trying to figure out the best way to deal with this at the moment before it gets wildly out of control
@@ojamma1690 no I ended up going with Slime Out by Fritz aquatics. Worked great and had no effect on the snails, shrimp, clownplecos, betta, or rasboras in my tank. Follow instructions and should be good to go.
can I use tetracycline for planted tank? If yes how much should I add 250mg of tetracycline for 45cm tank densely planted tank with fishes shrimps and snails
Hi! Would doing the black out affect the plants and fish as well? Plants since they also need light to grow and fish cos wouldn't they miss me lol I also have this cyano as well and currently figuring out ferts dosage and adjusting flow (any minor change I can do first before I resort to medicines).
3:45 So if i just dose a nitrogen fertilizer instead of my other fertilizer (flourish seachem 2Litres) my blue green algae on my sand bed will disapear? I hope so if anyone can get back to me on this that would be great cuz my cyanobacteria looks nasty :( thankyou
I have some algae that's really stuck on my anubias. I tried using a soft toothbrush to clean it off but I'm afraid of damaging the plants. Is it safe to scrub a little harder to get it off?
im not a big fan of you suggesting antibiotics as the 3rd option without mentioning the downsides and potential problems it can cause to all of us. Antibiotics are no joke. 1. it can lead to bacterial resistance 2. when do a water change and flush them down the toilet they are still active and will have effect on environment 3. you have (at least where I live) to get an prescription (which you probably won't get) or order them over the internet (probably illegal) 4. it's probably overkill anyways 3. Why not mention at least spot treatment with ec of bacter 100 which seems to work also
You are right I probably should have made a disclaimer for that. I apologize But the product I suggested is just a general tropical fish medicine, no need to get a prescription for that I think. But then again I don't know where you live.
I never do water changes and even have a filterless planted vase, with 0 cyanobacteria. I do have algae and test for phosphates and it's 0 unless I dose ferts. All low-tech, cheap lights. Never in my long experience in aquariums have had cyanobacteria.
I've researched a lot about blue green algae and this video is the best recourse I've seen. Great job.
Glad it was helpful!
Yes, E-mycin also is prescribed for people.
"Ultra Life Blue Green Slime Remover". It does not harm fish and it works every time on slime algae. I wish I knew about it years ago.
Yeah, it goes away more quickly if you turn the lights off for two days
Is it harmless to shrimp too?
@@evanchoo6638Yes, all my parameters stayed the same too. I do have a heavily planted tank though
@@evanchoo6638 I don't know for sure but it does not seem to do anything but kill the green slime.

Hydrogen peroxide is the safest and it works wonders.
This series in algae is great, I’m waiting for the green hair/thread algae episode. Cheers
Thanks Pete! Yep green hair/thread algae is coming soon!
Thanks for sharing this bro, this is so timely. I'm about to setup my first planted tank.
Awesome! good luck with your first planted tank, let me know if you have any questions
I seem to be having good luck dosing seachem nitrogen. Thanks for the tip!
I had a case of BGA in one of my aquariums, I increased the flow and changed my filter placement it all went away and hasn’t came back!
Awesome! Sometimes those simple changes can help a lot!
Loved that Swamp Thing part lol (hardcore DC comics fan over here). I've never experienced this type of "algae" before
Yeah thought it was funny 😅 oh man count yourself lucky!
Strange, I never had bga when I used an aquarium heater. I no longer use one ( house is very stable Temps) soon as the heater was removed bga exploded

How do you get it? Never understood how it gets introduced into my aquarium

What about alkaline hard water as a primary cause of cyanobacteria?
Thanks bro 🙏🏻

How about avoiding exposure to direct sunlight as a preventive measure or the use of UV-c light as a treatment?
Yeah always try to avoid direct sunlight. I've never used a UV light though

Buy Nerite snails, they eat the hard black algae. Place them on the Anubis’s leaves, they love it.
