@@WesDaviestravel i can see why you'd group together korea & japan as the 'developed' east asian countries with more high-cost/hard-working vibes. and that's probably very true for the locals. i do think there's some differences in the experience for non-locals, though.
one big thing i would mention right off the bat is that the 'teach english in korea and save money' thing is a little out of date, now: TEFL teachers there haven't had a payrise in about a decade, and they're feeling pinched (korea also has suffered from inflation/shrinkflation like everywhere else since the pandemic). also, it's worth mentioning that the weak yen in japan in recent years has really changed the experience for foreign tourists. japan feels ridiculously cheap thesedays; it's almost like a cheat code. considering the quality of restaurant meals, and other big pulls for tourists, it actually feels cheaper than korea now, which is surprising. i think this is reflected in the fact that korea's GDP per capita/GDP-ppp has now overtaken japan's. koreans are slowly becoming wealthier - and the country is becoming less of a destination good for making savings as a westerner.
both are definitely places where the office/corporate grind can wear you down, though: i agree on that. living in tokyo or seoul specifically is a very intense experience and probably won't attract the sort of people who are interested in any of the other places you mentioned!

Man, either you sleep late or you wake up very early! I’m planning on moving to Taiwan next year. Whenever I ask people who live in Taiwan as to what the costs are I’m given figures that are all over the place. On the low end I was told I’d need NT$50k and on the higher end it was about NT$90-100k. Mind you, this is for a couple tho.

@@muubie hi, I’m local person. Since you plan to move to Taiwan, would like to share the living cost depending on which city you will stay, Taipei is definitely much more higher cost compare to any other city in Taiwan . Where Wes live Kaohsiung in the 2nd big city(the most southern city) could be about 2/3 or probably 1/2 cheaper than Taipei) . NT$100k is not necessary in Taipei unless in downtown. However, all depends on what kind living you want. By the way, please get prepared to deal with the hot and humid tropical Taiwan, also more raining day in Taipei than Kaohsiung. Almost all of the foreigners living or visit say food is diverse, delicious and cheap, especially the convenient store 7-11 for 24hours everywhere. I think it the priority in the living. We are very very friendly! Welcome to Taiwan !

@@Brush-0328 Thanks so much for the insights. My partner was born in Taiwan and immigrated to the US as a youngster. So we have family in Taiwan (Taipei and Hsinchu) who we visit every few years.
Initially, we weren't even thinking of living in Taiwan but over the years we realized that Taiwan has an almost perfect combination of what is important to us. It's cheaper than the US, healthcare is excellent and cheap compared to the US, food is fantastic, crime wise it's so much safer and the people are on the whole so friendly and kind. The only thing we can't get a real handle on is what it would cost to live in Taipei or Hsinchu. When checking online the rentals for what we are looking for seems to be in the mid NT$20k to low NT$30k. Even at those prices it's probably less than half the going rate in my area in the US.
You mentioned the heat and I have to agree with you 100%. It can really be brutal there. I actually felt like my skin was burning at times. Thank goodness for air conditioning and cold teas and juices!
