I think backhanded compliments are statements that may seem like compliments on the surface but actually contain a subtle criticism or insult. They can often be sarcastic or have a hidden negative meaning. For example, saying "You're pretty smart for someone who doesn't study much" is a backhanded compliment because it implies that the person doesn't study much and is only smart relative to that.
