Any country in this situation would have to be brain-dead to not want to be powerful. You speak as if the moral thing for them to do would be for the Israeli population to just shrug, roll over and die (and make no mistake, those are the stakes, that is what Hamas wants to happen to the Israeli civilian population, and they've proved it by their actions as well as said so openly). You seem upset merely by the concept that Israel defended itself and tries to create a secure situation for its population by... um... extending Israeli power. What else would you have them do, exactly? Play dead like a possum and hope they don't get run over? What country on this planet would do that?

The only long-term solution is to establish a Palestinian state as soon as possible in which the Palestinians can make their own decisions. All other alternatives are the expansion of Israel and/or the imposition of someone else's will, i.e. the inequality of the Palestinians, which will someday cause a new crisis.
