Used to play this one so much as a kid! My boi Long was the most badass character in there. You can't help being badass when you're a handsome ponytailed bespectacled anime Kungfu master who turns into a tiger.
So, for anyone curious about Stun, The Insect, here's some info: He was a regular human (not a Zoanthrope, as is the name of people who turn into beasts) by the name of Steven Goldberg, who worked alongside Busuzima in a company called Tylon. Tylon, with the help of Busuzima, restrained Steven, in order to do experiments on him. More specifically, to turn him into a man-made Zoanthrope (Zoanthropes aren't genetic experiments, but have the ability to become beasts, because Gaia, spirit of the Earth, gave humans the ability to do so in order to survive the Natural Selection order, albeit only few can successfully do this, plus Zoanthropes only became a known thing in the world after the events of the first game, when Gado and Yugo helped destroy Tylon, and uncover the whole thing to the world), and, even more specifically, into an insect Zoanthrope. As you'll notice, every other Zoanthrope is a mammal. That's because Insects aren't compatible with mammals for this, so Steven's body barely accepted this, which is why he looks so blue in his "human" form, on the verge between an insect and a man, requiring him to drink blood to sustain himself, or his body will deteriorate. However, after Tylon is defeated after the events of Bloody Roar 1, Steven (now going by the name of "Stun") decides to do something with his life, instead of waiting for his body to die off somewhere in a ditch, and basically goes around, protecting the city from thugs and criminals, while feasting on their blood. Yeah the half beast she can't beform her full power as the cat or else she'll go to that thing again since Bloody Roar. As he reaches to Stage 5! Uriko taught him a lesson! By putting some mittens on him! Or even getting skippity pat-pat!
Man.. I remember gravitating towards Long the Tiger immediately when Bloody roar first came out, and couldn't put him down ever since. In 2 you get Shen-Long the clone who is a carbon copy of Long from the first game, then becomes his own personality in 3 and onwards... But what cracked me up was that he canonically hated being a clone SO much, that he dedicated himself to be Long's polar opposite in everything: Hair, proclivities, lifestyle, clothing, even his signature moves. Long would always do speed punches and Northern Shaolin, but now Shen Long bicycle kicks you into the sky a-la Sonya Blade and uses a Southern Kung Fu Snake style. It's little things like this that make each character really become their own entity. I fuggin' love Bloody Roar, man.
I absolutely loved this franchise. Outside of Tekken it was probably my most played fighting game at the time. This game desperately needs to be revived, so much awesome stuff they could do with it on modern hardware.
Bloody Roar (the first one) was my absolute favorite fighting game growing up. I only played a bit of 2 and didn't have the platforms to play any of the sequels on. But man, it still holds up so well even today if you ask me. Really want to see this series revived.
The Beast Drive isn't the combo that shows up in the ending Max saw (there's two endings, the second one has every playable character AND has combos that end in Beast Drives). It's a super that can be used while in Beast mode that spends any meter you have left and turns you back into human form.
Bloody Roar 2 is easily one of my favourite fighting games on the PS1. When I found out my local arcade brought in a machine I would play it at least once a week. Held the top winning streak for Vs wins at 79. Since I had practice at home on such a obscure game in my country, literally no one knew how to handle the Long "infinite" loops.
Need a full series on Bloody Roar. First game had some features worth looking at, IMO. Oh, and since the first game was skipped, does that mean it is one game per franchise for _this_ retrospective? I ask because Battle Arena Toshinden 2 was, IIRC, a better fame overall than the original (which Max already looked at).
out of all the old weird shit Max has played this has to be my favorite. some of the characters look great, id love to see them in current year gud grephics
This was the first fighting game I owned. I’ve played SSF2 and MK on my dads old stuff but the PS1 was my first console and this was my first fighting game. I need to play this again.
The game's intro should start at the 3rd or 4th opponent and that's where shit hits the bat. To fight shenlong, you must make it through all stages including gado without a continue. You have one shot at him, I repeat ONE SHOT!
Wow max you unlocked a memory i had no idea existed. One of my earliest video gaming memories was firing this game up and not knowing wth I was doing but also having the best time. Gosh I miss being a kid.Thank you so much Max for the awesome content,Shine on DOOD!!!!
I remember discovering this game in my uncles house while he was catching up with my dad , i snuck into his room and played this gem one of the best times of my life 😁
Kinda impressive this performs as smoothly as it does while having 3D backdrops. Most console fighters of this era would sacrifice that visual flourish and resort to using flat static background images to maintain a rock solid 60fps.
I'm really bummed that this series never gained traction like others did. Imagine a remaster of this with enhanced graphics and better detailed character models. Konami killing off good series like they're the plague. EDIT: Do you guys think there's a way to circumvent having Konami claim a game if you build it upon a concept of fighters that turn into animal counterparts of some fashion?
If you make it your own style thats different from the actual game, even if they try to claim something its never going to stick. Having people transform in a game isn't something that Konami owns
back in the day here in my town, theres only 1 arcade machine and one game and thats bloody roar 2 lots of memory. everyone wants to play with you. greetings from polomolok south cotabato
The mechanics are crispy in this game and I've never heard of this game before. Looks like a better quality than Tekken at the time. Wonder why it isn't remade.
Long is my favorite fighting game character of all time because of his combo trees and that beautiful Ora punch combo finisher they show off in the credits. Me and a friend spent a session going 130+ matches (yes the game kept count), mostly me as Long and him as Shenlong on the PS3 years after the series was dead and the game was still fun af. Definitely deserves an update of some kind.
15:04 Oh yeah I remember you can actually cancel a special move(forgot which button) and use it as a fake out. Gado CPU uses that a lot, lmao. 16:24 Wait Max has been using that one button super? Lmao, that is actually a trap and does little damage, you are encourage to manually input that Beast Drive because it will deal the intended damage for a super.
i had a very fun time playing this game back in highschool..i couldnt pull off those end credit combos per say, but creating your own combos is very satisfying, finding that you could trigger your beast mode during the combos and end it with the beast special is sooo...gooood..maaan.. oh, and Long got his nemesis as a hidden boss in this game..a frustrating fight that was..but unlocking him and using his combos is very fun!
Bloody roar 1 and 2 especially were just as epic to me as Street Fighter and Tekken back in my childhood days. It breaks my heart every time I hear someone say they’ve never heard of it or played it.
so many memories with this one. I remember i would play this just because it was so epic to kick the opponents so hard they break the fence of the stage and be sent flying out of bonds
I didn't expect you to touch on this game but I couldn't be happier that you did. Bloody Roar 2 was pure genius that was well beyond its time. Fighting game love at first sight for myself. It looks good, sounds good, and most importantly plays excellently. Regardless of your claims and expectations I will always have hope for a reboot because I can think of few games that deserve it more
If only Konami just sell Bloody Roar's IP to any fighting game company by chance I mean this series had potential really and would be a great addition to what fighting games we had today instead of Konami making this a Pachinco game if they revive this series
Except The New Breed makes way more sense. The New Breed of Humans The New Breed Of Animals The New Breed Of Genetics The New Breed..... See.. makes more sense in context of what we are seeing.

How did this series kick the bucket when DOA somehow managed to survive? I don't hate DOA but the BR franchise has way more charismatic characters and a great gimmick. Boobs over Beasts I guess.
If Konami ever does start making video games again, and using Hudson Soft properties, the reboot of Bloody Roar should pull a Mortal Kombat, and retcon the best parts of all the previous games into one game. Basically the game engine and story mode of this game, with all the funky Bloody Roar 1 characters like Fox and Greg and Mitsuko, with maybe a handful of later game weirdos like Xion. Bonus characters could include Bomberman, who transforms into emo edgy dark reboot Bomberman, Milon from Milon's Secret Castle, who shrinks when he touches the glove, Cornell from Castlevania, who becomes a wolf, Dracula, who turns into a devil, or the thing from the start of Symphony of the Night, and Alucard, who transforms into the Zapf Bat from Super Castlevania IV.
As I say every time I see people playing Bloody Roar 2. This was the first Fighting game that I really got into. it also got me into heavy metal. This was for sure my favourite of the whole series though. the ones after felt like they were just trying to add more to the story than it ever really needed. Its really funny your remark at 1:35 "Uriko... Half beast EWWW", later on she massacred you!
Yeah the half beast she can't beform her full power as the cat or else she'll go to that thing again since Bloody Roar.
As he reaches to Stage 5! Uriko taught him a lesson! By putting some mittens on him! Or even getting skippity pat-pat!
Yugo really be lookin' like a Walmart Great Value™ Terry Bogard with Wolf and all.
Most of these legacy games are just nostalgia, but this looks like it's still fun today. Has slicker movement than some modern titles.
This game is great. Remember being 7 and going over to visit my cousins and playing this and mvc2 for hours
Oh man, I remember playing this game and doing long combos w/ Long.
Ahaha, good one
The Beast Drive isn't the combo that shows up in the ending Max saw (there's two endings, the second one has every playable character AND has combos that end in Beast Drives). It's a super that can be used while in Beast mode that spends any meter you have left and turns you back into human form.
*Max types ASS*
Game: "Did you mean HUD?"
HUD? As in Homeowner's Urban Development? LMAO!!

Wow, I never thought anyone would give the respect this game deserves.
The first fighting game I ever owned was actually given to me for free.
Scenes a faire is a thing. Generic elements are something that can't be claimed under copyright.
back in the day here in my town, theres only 1 arcade machine and one game and thats bloody roar 2 lots of memory. everyone wants to play with you.
greetings from polomolok south cotabato
The mechanics are crispy in this game and I've never heard of this game before. Looks like a better quality than Tekken at the time. Wonder why it isn't remade.
Konami, that's why.
Bloody Roar was my childhood!! Missed this series!!
Yugo always cracked me up back then with that "Upperrr!" Kat sounds like fred from scooby doo. 😂😂😂
There has been no franchise I’d like to be reborn more than this one...give it the arc system treatment
Easily my favorite ps1 fighter. This game is insane when two people who know what the fuck they are doing go at it. This game is fucking awesome.
This game...Man, i'd take an hd remake if they never made a new one from ground up. Love this game and the music(arcade and home ost)
Long has always been my favorite character. I love his different combos.
way back in the day when i was doing game music, I pitched on doing the title/intro music to this game
The characters
The movement
The combat
The music
Just all of it so freaking cool
I never got tired of hearing
"LONG; THE TIGER"
Shenlong the Tiger 🔥🔥🔥
Even though Long means "Dragon" in Mandarin Chinese... 🐉
Me too😍😍😍
Bloody roar 1 and 2 especially were just as epic to me as Street Fighter and Tekken back in my childhood days. It breaks my heart every time I hear someone say they’ve never heard of it or played it.
(Hey this looks like a cool idea. Maybe someone will revive it one day)
"Konami has the rights to this property"

What does that mean? I heard it was coming back

so many memories with this one. I remember i would play this just because it was so epic to kick the opponents so hard they break the fence of the stage and be sent flying out of bonds
I am sure that Jenny is pretty much human form of Rouge the Bat from Sonic games.
I didn't expect you to touch on this game but I couldn't be happier that you did. Bloody Roar 2 was pure genius that was well beyond its time. Fighting game love at first sight for myself. It looks good, sounds good, and most importantly plays excellently. Regardless of your claims and expectations I will always have hope for a reboot because I can think of few games that deserve it more
*Memories of that kickstarter that shall not be named return.*
:c
"Tiger dude" was my main back in the day. And the guy he's fighting was my #2. Falcon step was awesome to me as a kid lol.
It was "Long!"
If only Konami just sell Bloody Roar's IP to any fighting game company by chance I mean this series had potential really and would be a great addition to what fighting games we had today instead of Konami making this a Pachinco game if they revive this series
Imagine NetherRealm studios getting ahold of this IP? The possibilities.
Played the demo to death back in the 90's. Learning how to do Long's multiple punch move when I first witnessed it.
I actually liked the Japanese title of the game. "Bringer Of The New Age" sounded more badass than "The New Breed".
Except The New Breed makes way more sense.
The New Breed of Humans
The New Breed Of Animals
The New Breed Of Genetics
The New Breed..... See.. makes more sense in context of what we are seeing.
I agree
What about BEASTERIZER?
and they didn't completely butcher Uriko's voice.
The japanese versions the best
wish i could watch you live more max but cheers for uploading these, gotta say my bro and me loved bloody roar back in the day! so its like going down memory lane for us...also...this franchise needs to come back! :O
Never played back in the day and now I wish I did. It's such a cool and polished game.
Had to best this with every character. I absolutely love this franchise and has always been one of my favorite concepts ever.
Okay, I've never even heard of this game until now, and even *I* want a remaster for next gen because of how sick this is.
Never heard of bloody roar? What do you live under a rock or something
How does this game have better animations than most games that come out nowadays
BLOODY ROAR NEEDS TO COME BACK! Imagine NRS making a Bloody Road game with the old creators of the game! That would be amazing!
Long and Bakuryu were my 2 mains back in the day. This series was so awesome, fingers crossed they bring it back at some point.
The only Bloody Roar I ever played and it was so much fun.
Awesome Max! I recently watched your Battle Arena Toshinden Video and was searching for a Bloody Roar one. But there was none! I only stumpled upon a video of you about 8 years ago speculating about a reboot. And I think we'll see one soon (they refreshed the trademark last year).
Why didn't he start with Bloody Roar 1?
How did this series kick the bucket when DOA somehow managed to survive? I don't hate DOA but the BR franchise has way more charismatic characters and a great gimmick. Boobs over Beasts I guess.
If BLOODY ROAR ever gets a current gen game I'm buying it IMMEDIATELY!!!
I need to satisfy my BLOODY ROAR needs again...
I want a Bloody Roar Reboot where Fang is his own character like Shen Long the White Tiger.
As I say every time I see people playing Bloody Roar 2. This was the first Fighting game that I really got into. it also got me into heavy metal. This was for sure my favourite of the whole series though. the ones after felt like they were just trying to add more to the story than it ever really needed. I'm glad I got to watch this live and even more glad that a huge Streamer for fighting games was playing it.
