April '22 Maine Military Surplus outside of Bangor, selling used serviceable medium with brand new frame and thick padded straps for $59. A great deal indeed!
The surplus “ALICE” gear is drying up. The good stuff is getting expensive. The underside of the lid on mine was pretty much dry rotted, so I sprayed it with “FlexSeal”, works great.
Great video brother. I still have my medium ALICE pack with frame and shelf from 1990 when I was in Boy Scouts. It has held up great over the past 31 years and never ripped or needed repairs. All it ever needed was spot cleaning with soap and a old toothbrush and a hose down. The guys would tease me about it being a cheap $40 rig but they were always repairing their Keilty and Jansport packs. ALICE is very robust and a little on the heavy side but wears like Iron.
It reminds me of my external frame Boy Scouts pack that I had in the 70's...lol. It's a beast. I only paid $30 for mine at the local Army Navy surplus store. If it's good for the military it's good for me. It will last forever.
Great job as usual! FYI tips. I too use the top flap for Hygiene Gear, because having a Clean Bum is important. But I discovered that the 3 outer pouches will each hold a Half Gallon Cranberry Juice Bottle, so you can have 1.5 Gallons of water ready to go. The Eyelets that you used for your Machete was a hold over from the 1910 Field gear system that was in use from WW1 up to ALICE. So if you want to attach a field Dressing Pouch, a Old School ETool, yada yada yada, it could fit. And as others have said, you could strip the pack off of the Frame and use it to carry Ammo Cans, a Jerry Can, etc, provided you have the Shelf and the Securing Straps. Hope this helps.
I have a large Allice pack that I am going to set up as my winter load out. I also have the ILBE main pack, but I think I am going to keep that as my bug out bag. Thanks for the content. Stay safe.
Awesome video. My company back in 2003 got issued the large alice, we kept breaking the frames on our molle packs lol, but if I had to choose molle or alice...I would definitely go with the alice.
Great video. Very helpful and informative. Thanks for sharing it. I have only used my medium ALICE pack for day hiking so far. It felt very well balanced and comfortable. No pain or discomfort after a 9 mile hike on the first trip with it. I placed my 3L hydration bladder in the interior radio compartment and it worked out great. After getting used to all the strapping it's easy to use. I laced a parachord carry handle to the top of the frame which is very handy. I've yet to take it out overnight, but I have loaded it up with all of my camping gear just to see what it felt like wearing it. There again, it felt very sturdy and balanced.
Nice Job on the video brother, I bought my first medium ALICE pack in the early 80s as a kid and went thru everything with it. Still have it and its held together all these years . Like your surplus Sunday videos keep up with the good work.
Wow I got lucky. I found one in great shape at Goodwill for $15. McDonald's is more expensive in 2024. I'm watching vids like these to confirm, it's an LCII surplus, NOT the mini. It's in pretty good shape, no tears or holes the straps aren't even frayed. Goodwill sometimes has some real gems. Thanks for the video! Great tips and info.
I checked as well it's the GI frame, not the Chinese one. The only issue I found was that one of the bottom loops needs sewing. Other than that, WOW I'm impressed with this pack. Real neat to see how pack evolution has come along.
Great feedback, thanks for sharing!👍 .... Found myself an original U.S. issued large ALICE pack w/ frame at a flea market for $45.00 in 2015. It needed some alterations & mods, but what do you expect? I was living in Florida at the time, and it served perfectly for several of the dispersed trips I've taken in Green Swamps divided tracts. Best pack I've ever owned!
Best explanation yet........I prefer the medium myself as I tend to overload the large. I can attach to the medium if necessary. About the stink of the willie pete bag. I've seen US GI ponchos with the same smell. I believe at one time they used a rubber preservative powder or coating on the rubber that deteriorated with time and eventually smelled like vomit.
Side note: Don't buy the Rothco straps. They can't handle the weight . I had both fail at the worst time. Tried again with a new set and they failed not even 10 minutes into the hike . Was only carrying 40lbs.
@@traxxas328 oh for sure they certainly do! Apparently they have had some good runs back in the day on certain items, but most of their stuff is garbage. Even their uniforms are complete trash.
Thanks for doing these videos and thank you for your service. I have the large ALICE pack and a few medium packs. My favorite is the medium since it hangs so much closer to your back than the large. I did a "Hellcat" mod to my camo medium Alice. Been tweaking it for quite a few years now. I think I almost have it how I want it now. Also have the traditional version too.👍
Found a warehouse in south africa with at least 500 medium packs in various condition, some unissued and still with tacky top flap, got a few for some mates and my lC2 has become my main pack, replaced my SA army pattern 83 field pack. The packs are around 500 South african rand
Good refresher. Could you do a video with the same pack system for a 3 season, 48-72 hour type of patrol load out. I’ve upgraded mine with tactical tailor straps. Good to see what former service members would use in a patrol/multi day type system. Great videos man, keep em coming!
Good and interesting Video. Thank you! Have an Alice Pack Large with frame and a a medium without. In Europe the turkish army had a ruck similar to the medium in camouflage with som modifications. This is also a very intersting ruck. Greetings from Germany!
The plastic lining on my lid rotted away as usual, but instead of repairing it I just put a flattened MRE bag in the pocket. It won't do a great job, probably no better than doing nothing at all. But it helps the lid keep its shape, and I suppose it might be better than nothing.
I used my A.L.I.C.E. pack for ten years after I got out. Until some jackass broke into my house and took it. Probably the most favorite pack I’ve ever had. Great video. Like traveling back in time. Semper Fi
I'm watched all the way through the video but a lot of these guys tell you that these things things are no longer supplied yes it's true as aftermarket sticking in but if you want to find Alice packs search the western United States Army Surplus chains there are tons of these throughout the West so there's no shortage so don't pay top dollar for these things and lessor in real good quality condition I paid $65 for mine and it was like brand new and the guy threw in the shoulder straps waist belt and the frame couple of good stores are The Dugout in Bonners Ferry Idaho Smith and Edwards in Utah there also on RUclips you can't find it in your area guarantee you they can find it in theirs and they won't charge you an arm and a leg for shipping I think Smith & Edwards can even get you a very rare M4 Sherman amphibious tank it's it's right outside their door
It's the waterproof lining breaking down. It goes sticky, stinks like $#!t and doesn't repel water any more. On my ALICE packs I replace the flap under the lid with cordura or pack nylon. Alternatively I had a cordura pack that did this and I washed it in liquid laundry detergent in a hot bath and that neutralised the breakdown and turned the sticky stuff into horrible flaky dust that came off every time I used the pack and got in my eyes, nose and everything else! I ended up scrubbing that off with a stiff brush and vacuum cleaner.

Not only is it drying up but army/navy surplus stores are fading away
That's alot of damage!!!
It’s a shame
I like the old mountain troop packs
I just picked up a "new" never issued ALICE pack from the surplus store in St Paul MN for $50. So still good deals out there

Wow memories from my Military Service.

I just got an almost brand new Alice pack. It has the quick release hip belt. Im loading it up today and giving it a go with rucking
I also got one for $45
Great thing about a bomb proof bag.. no zippers! I swear by alice pack.
miss most of the live had to come back ! i have a alice pack frame shelf , very handy !
I wanted to use one of those as an electrician, would cut the trips back and forth to the truck.
Great pack probably the best a person could have it has a lot of uses

Old school is the best school.
If it ant broken don't fix it and old school is not broken
I lucked out and just picked up the medium alice with the frame for only $28.00. at an outdoor flea market.
Great job bro!!! Never did like the"big green tick" when I was using it!!
Side note: Don't buy the Rothco straps. They can't handle the weight . I had both fail at the worst time. Tried again with a new set and they failed not even 10 minutes into the hike . Was only carrying 40lbs.
Rothco tends to make junk from what I’ve seen over the years

Funny enough, went to the surplus store the other day, had 1 medium alice for 70, 2 larges for 50. Mediums are drying up faster it looks like

Oh come on! The prc 77 was a small engine block. Especially after 15 miles. It wasn't called prick because of the prc.

your pack is in amazing condition
I have a medium pack and a large pack with frame. Great packs for sure and wouldn’t trade them. Thank you for sharing this information.

There is a surplus store in Pretoria, South Africa that literally has thousands of these medium and large packs, some in unissued condition.
KEEP UP YOUR INTERESTING WORK!! GREAT VIDEO'S
OUTSTANDING! LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR PACKING SUGGESTIONS.
I've replaced my frame with a mole frame
Excellent vid.
They are the AK47 of the Rucksack.
You made my memory smell the inside of s waterproof bag... damn you.
But spot on info, well done sir.
I used my A.L.I.C.E. pack for ten years after I got out. Until some jackass broke into my house and took it.
Probably the most favorite pack I’ve ever had.

@ Three River Blades... Where did you find the Blackwater stuff sack? Thanks in advance👍😎🇺🇸
It's worth it if it has the US production contract serial number , cold war surplus Gear ⚙️ very well made !
Great video
Thanks!
Good video as always brother stay safe out there
How are the long strap metal buckles used properly?
how to order that items
The packs themselves are great but the frames are hell for guys like, who have a long torso.

I love ALL of my milsurp.
how can i order your surfplus combat backpack sir?
Are those 3 outside pouches sewn on or clipped on ?
Sewn, with a pass through cavity behind the pouch for shovel handles or machetes to slide through.
Just wondering if anyone else has a problem with military surplus gear getting sticky on the inside flaps and what you do to remove it?
It's the waterproof lining breaking down.
It goes sticky, stinks like $#!t and doesn't repel water any more.

8:20 is it like rotten ass parmesan cheese and feet?
What's the make and model of the machete?
Gi issue. Many makers.
9 pounds with frame? No way
No kidding. That's what modern empty FILBE weighs!

你好兄弟,我非常喜欢这款背包!一直没收藏到这款背包,美国有新的这款背包买吗?
Yes i agree too 🙄
How much does it weigh?
Great video
