When he uttered the words "The interview remains very vivid in my mind, because it is one of the strangest interviews I've had during my over 20 years of doing graduate work" I just thought "Yeah, that fits"
Sam's disdain for his milieu fuels a lot of his work. The reason those subjects (racism, sexism, etc.) come up in his sketches is because it's a pressure point for the people he hates so much. Whether or not he would be as provocative as he is now if the culture were different is an interesting question but one that is really unanswerable.
I think this captures part of what motivates Sam’s style of comedy so well. I have a friend who struggles with their enjoyment of MDE content, because they are really put off whenever Sam starts casually referring to Jews or is absurdly racist or misogynistic. They cannot fathom why anyone who touches these subjects in the way Sam does would do so for any reason other than it being a representation of their earnest political beliefs. idk if it’s a lack of imagination or the fact that comedy has become overtly political in the last 15 years.

Sammy’s character seems to have matured a lot over the years. He has somehow morphed into this patriarchal figure. His advice and life lessons are very practical and actually help a lot of young men out. He has discussed on his podcasts/streams relationships, how to handle money/debt, and how to get your life together. If you don’t have a dad (or an absentee one) it makes navigating life that much more difficult. I think that’s why he’s so popular, because you find out about Sam Hyde and you go down a rabbit hole. You think he’s a comedian, but then it’s 2am and you’re watching Sam lecture about how I need to get purpose and meaning in my life, stop doing drugs, and work out or stay on the fast lane to loser town. He gives hope to young men in the trenches of life like myself.

Theres been a huge uprising in online Gurus in recent years not just Sam. I think Sam genuinely cares about his followers and that they don't waist time and make wiser choices with their lives but theres also a huge incentive to offer guru advice for all those with a large following. There's many channels that built followings doing one thing but now they're all just telling people how to navigate their lives. Death of religion and all that. Again, I don't blame Sam. I think he started the regular streams to get some money to pay staff and has plans for a large reality show and will abandon streams when he reaches his financial goal. The level of grind must be difficult to sustain.

The fact that people see Sam as nihilistic proves that his art is above the heads of the contemporary art crowd.
His work is a black mirror to the vapid self-congratulatory art we see in mainstream media and on outlets like tumblr and reddit.
We saw the same thing when there was extreme outrage over something as banal as college kids putting up posters that say "It's Okay to be White" meanwhile support of child mutilation is considered the norm. I think the goal eventually became to trick the news into reporting him as the shooter which actually happened multiple times, despite the widespread presence of the meme. Making journalists look stupid, making them say your little inside joke is always a good time and shows just how little prep goes into things that hundreds of thousands of people see every day.

Sam Hyde was definitely born in the wrong simulation. Really enjoyed this video as well and hearing your take on him. There is something persistently performative about Sam Hyde and the way he blurs the lines between comedy, satire and nihilism. Definitely seems like a tortured guy but I think whats refreshing is his ability to pull together disparate parts of the current cultural zeitgeist with his personal viewpoint and singular aesthetic to create content thats oddly refreshing and unhinged. He's a twisted joker living in a twisted joker world and I truly do hope he finds fulfillment in the content he puts together in the coming years with his team. We appreciate Sam and the cult following he has amassed is not going anywhere anytime soon.

In all seriousness, Sam's message is absolutely one filled with distain for postmodern American culture, and in that sense it's very political. But he is not trying to form some kind of political movement, and if he has an ideology, it's a very loose set of common sense guiding principles, like "take care of yourself and get tough". He's definitely not some kind of nazi, anarchist, etc. He's just a very funny artist with a lot of disdain for the world around him and a desire to make a mark on it.

Identities are LARPs, seeing the Self so as not to attach to any identity is not a LARP. So in this way we can appraise people by something beyond IQ or GPA. Interviews are typically about putting people in a box and by the time the interview is complete, the audience is like "OK yep that's who they are."
You NEED to watch Sam Hyde's speech at Rutgers university, it's called 'how to make it as an artist'. Also heads up watch the whole thing despite how unhinged it seems, he has a few interesting nuggets of wisdom in that speech that I think give a unique insight into his deeper psyche and perspective about art.
He really isn't this enigma man everyone claims him to be, he is just like you, he's trying his best to be original, or at the very least fit into a unique category that defines him and separates himself for the rest of the world.

Found your videos through Sam and am always excited to see what you put out. I wish I had the lexicon to speak more intelligently on his work, but it seems undeniably linked with the digital age. The ambiguity of his intentions/earnestness is a microcosm of most informational phenomena in the modern age, from yellow journalism to Twitter rants, to corporate PR releases and celebrity moralizing, etc. The endless web of knowledge at our fingertips is ultimately of an alien and obscured origin.
I'm not sure how intentional this positionality is. I think artists often channel what's beyond their comprehension, and the broader relevance is only known in hindsight. It's like people saying Dylan had his, "finger on the pulse of a generation," yet when questioned about his process in that era, he'll say, "it wasn't me writing those things."

You’re not going to believe this, but complete coincidence. I had no idea about any announcement
Based on your comments about the various shooter and terrorist events where the media labels Sam as the perpetrator, namely that you're unsure whether these are a result of Sam's fanbase or Sam himself, suggests to me that you don't have a good understanding of fringe internet subcultures. This is important, because Sam likely emerged form or has at least become symbiotic with this culture. There's a certain demographic of young people who are largely ignored by mainstream society so they console and share funny stories on internet imageboards. Their humour is wrapped in layers upon layers of irony and they like to explore fringe political ideas too. You'll often see these guys referring to the concept of "this timeline" when referencing certain events, which seems to indicate that the world can be manipulated in very esoteric ways, like an egregore. The more absurd lengths something can be manipulated towards, such as a lesser known comedian being wrongly blamed for numerous tragedies by multiple mainstream media outlets, the more thrilling and hysterical it is, and the more is reinforces the idea that reality can be manipulated. Sam's work has this absurdist, dream-like quality which embodies this essence.

IMO Sam is one of those artist that simply go against the idol of coherent thought as a constraint on thinking, and in general against everything what can be considered social norm. His early standup was based around telling people uncomfortable truths (was it that art doesn't pay or how the AIDS epidemic spread) and making a fool of himself, and in doing that he gets people to self reflect and realize how they are deeply inauthentic (anyone who sees themselves as an intelectual listening to TedTalks, anyone who thinks they are a leader of a workers movement by doing Twitch streams etc) while creating entertainment by showing us people too dumb to realize that he is actually the one making fun of them.
I genuinely think that he cares a lot about design and art, its visible from his streams when he talks about the creative process behind his work, and he is a really nervous guy (again from talks on his stream)
And even tho he is controversial and labeled constantly, I think its all just him pushing against social constraints, people will talk about how we donated to a Republican candidate but now how he donated even more to BLM (but then, all of this was done in private and should remain private)
You could include him in a general group of people that think like Baudrillard, Blanchot, de Sade, Derrida, Artaus... and from contemporary ones Mike Ma and Nick Land to the list (not saying that his stuff comes close to their, just thats its a similar form of thinking)

To me, it seems that someone who attended one of the most expensive and elite undergrad art programs in the most powerful nation that has ever existed and during the wealthiest time in human history is in no position to offer meaningful critique or commentary on elitism, pretense or power in the context of an academic setting. And I'm referring to Sam specifically, not to you. He seems more like a symptom of a self-important, entitled, narcissistic and immature Western millennial culture that has never faced any real challenges or hardships, at least up until the pandemic. He possesses the very attributes he accuses the political and cultural Left of falling into, while offering no self-awareness or acknowledgement of being a part of the toxic culture that he criticizes. In fact, I think the reason he's gotten this far and become relatively successful is precisely because he's part of the status quo and not a true cultural critic.

I can never understand the confusion about what Sam does. It seems fairly straightforward to me. He is a somewhat conservative person that has beliefs and understands how to put that across in a way that is funny and right on to some and anger inducing and confrontational to people who are ignorant to those ideas or are opposed to them. I think he makes what he does funny but he has beliefs and if you can't see where the parts are that are hyperbole and what he actually believes then its either up to you to figure it out or its not for you. Something I've come to realise is that Sam recognised was stuck with a fanbase from his younger self's work. Instead of trying to distance himself from these edge-of-society, lost, angry young individuals, he's attempted to de-radicalise them. He was very quick to pivot to online content in which he attempts to push his fanbase's toxic ideology to a place where they're healthier and less angry. I don't think he gets enough credit for doing this. He doesn't reject them or appraise them, but tries to bring them in on the intent of his work. Nihilism sometimes appears to be political to the less informed, and he's trying to help them understand themselves.

That’s the first I’ve heard of him “de-radicalizing” people. In what ways? I’m assuming you’re referring to his life advice about getting your life together and building up a ton of credit card debt, but he’s def never done much regarding de-radicalizing people ideologically or politically.
Very interesting take! I disagree with the nihilism analysis though. In some of his more serious advice videos he preaches a lot about the importance of having a skill, being responsible etc and not falling into the psychological pitfalls of thinking negatively about life and yourself. Great video man, keep up the stellar content.

I think you have a caricaturized idea of nihilism. All those things you listed don’t contradict nihilism, it’s totally possible to live a fulfilling life through your actions, job, etc while maintaining that it doesn’t matter in the end. But may as well make life enjoyable even if it means nothing.
Just to clarify, the cultural location that his early work was coming from was heavily influenced by early message board culture which can make this type of humor very bizzare and unpalatable to people who didn't participate on early web forums and such

I think if you want to understand the edgy off-kilter stuff and why people like Sam gravitate towards it, it is completely a class based phenomenon. The sort of ascended socially acceptable class which abides by the constantly updating list of social faux pas handed down by a frankly incompetent metropolitan elite, have a deep disdain for the lower class. In my own schooling at a rather liberal university I felt it very hard to stomach the sweeping statements about the lower class, their lack of education, their lack of moral character, their inability to accept basic concepts pertaining to the status quo. These statements came out of the mouths of long tenured professors and students both. Even though I would be well suited for further academic life I couldn't morally stomach the behavior of these people or the bizarre and unjustifiable mish mash of philosophies they followed. And like Sam i went to the reactionary side for a time, bridged my own education on my own terms, explored taboo ideology and then eventually came back to where Sam probably is. He probably isn't emotionally invested in those taboo ideologies any more, he plays them for laughs now but when the status quo gives you a worthless world frame it is no mystery there are so many people dabbling in them, exploring if they have something to say.
The class thing is VERY real... no flex. but honestly, I don't think I roll like that. Too much information on me, but it's against my religion. Arrogance is an abomination. I fight the instinct. "Whatever you did for the least of these brothers and sisters, you did for me."
I’ve never heard someone so succinctly describe why I love Sam Hyde so much. There’s always a nagging guilt in the back of my mind for enjoying his stuff because taken at face value some of his content is pretty abhorrent, but on the other hand there is such an awareness and craftsmanship to what he produces. It’s impossible not to see the art in it.
I like to think, in a way, that him not getting into film school is what forged his new-age style that we all love. Maybe screwing up the interview is what made him who he is today.
He may have applied to film school. The program he applied to here is an experimental graphic design program.
I feel like I completely understand Sam's comedy and where he comes from without ever feeling the desire to question his personas or categorize it. It would be like trying to look deeply at Buster Keaton, in the sense that you just half to watch and enjoy. If you are a young man who grew up in America and haven't fallen into one side of the cultural divide, than you just intrinsically understand Sam and his approach.

I feel the same way, really. I'm not super political, I have my own beliefs and I'm sure a lot of them clash with Sam's, but who cares. If it's funny, then it's funny, and that's that. Maybe I did question Sam's ideological views for a bit, before I realized that it really has no bearing on how his skits are digested. He's here to make funny shit and parody social trends, and to think we need to know his personal views on things in order to find him entertaining is dumb.
It´s cool, I first saw your posters in Brno Biennale in maybe 2009, the weird hairy meshed blob creatures, i liked them alot. Then imagine my surprise when years later i find this channel from Sam and when i look into it it´ you who made the posters. Were you maybe in Berno yourself at that time?

Coming as a fan of MDE as a whole but not necessarily all of the work the Sam has done and with no formal "education" in the art world I find it really amusing that you're so confused by the "Sam as the joke patsy for all tragic events" meme. It happens because it's funny. It's not Sam orchestrating it, it's not enemies or people with a problem with him either. It started as all memes start, with one person making it happen because they thought it would be funny (and it was). Someone sees a funny picture of Sam holding a rifle, it just so-happened to coincide with some sort of major "newsworthy" event and thought to themselves that it would be amusing to mess with the media by giving them, the extremely reactionary media, a "tip" sending them the photo and implicating him as the culprit. Part of the joke is the understanding that the mainstream media isn't actually a source of real information and is easily manipulated, the second part of the joke is knowing that they will share the photo live on air over and over and over again, regardless of how many times they have already fallen for it and regardless of how easy it would be to quickly debunk it, which in turn leads to the final part of the joke: The news themselves making a mockery of the tragic event because they don't bother to check sources or verify information. They don't care about "the truth", they care about ratings and being the first ones to market with a "story". People saw humor in this and it just became a thing that people do, a meme. It worked once, so they did it again and saw that it worked over and over and over. People do it because it's funny. It's funny 1. because everyone knows the media will fall for it YET AGAIN and 2. because he just can't keep getting away with it!

@@StudioPractice1 well maybe not "gaay" but he used to be way skinnier and in some ways arguably more sensitive/ feminine. Hes admitted to doing at least one cycle of sterooids before he did his big boxing match.
@@dannyhightower911 When did he admit to a cycle? Video? I've watched almost all of Sam's stuff and I've definitely heard him mention other than tobacco he has stayed away from all drugs and alcohol his whole life due to watching his Dad grow up an alcoholic.
