    When I was a kid in West Germany in the late 1980ies, i was playing in our garden, and I looked up and there was this giant B-52 filling the whole sky, followed by a thunderous roar that seemed to last forever. Pretty awesome and also scary. There was a distinctive mountain nearby which they used as a landmark. Also sonic booms every day, and jet fighters training dogfights, circling... Once a month the town's "doomsday" sirens were tested. I'm really glad the cold war is over.

    I'll never forget seeing a B52 take off and do a (very) "Low and slow" for the crowd 30 yrs back at an airshow in Peru Indiana which at that time had a SAC refueling wing. My mouth dropped open and stayed that way as it flew by! Big, beautiful and LOUD! Made a fan out of me for life!

    The B-52 has such strange/unique aerodynamic characteristics. It literally creates positive lift at negative angle of attack (based on the angle of the fuselage), as is best evidenced by this video at around 0:26. Some large Russian transport aircraft have similar behavior, where the pitch angle is nearly zero at takeoff, giving a very eerie appearance.

    I flew the B-52H 35 years ago. Regarding previous comments: The aircraft flies nose low as the design has 22 degrees (my recollection) of wing camber built in, in contrast to most other aircraft. As the flaps are extended in this video (two positions, up or down) the aircraft must be flying at less than 180 KIAS (the flap speed limit). The engines are Pratt TF-33 turbofans (the same as the C-141 had four of - minus thrust reversers) and put out 17,500 pounds of thrust each. Discussion every few years exists regarding re-engining to improve reliability, fuel consumption and unrefueled endurance but doesn't win in the choices. The pilots eject upwards, the navigators (stationed below them) downward. The gunner (no longer on the crew) and electronic warfare officer seats face aft behind the pilots and eject upwards as well. Any additional crewmembers/instructors would bail out "any opening available" (ie vacated navigator hatch).

      true,,any many Iraqi soldiers can attest to that. during the first Gulf War, we would come across the desert at low level to avoid anti-aircraft fire and hugged the ground until our IP then we would climb to 1500 feet , drop our bombs on target and drop back to the ground and beat feet out of the AO.

    I worked on the B-52 1983-1986 the bombers got a solid state radar to take it to the year 2040 the B52's weigh 1100 less with the new radar. I was an inspector and saved this project from many problems that I found and stopped the assembly line many times every time I found some thing wrong .on one time I saved the project .by catching problems and broken continuity the grand mother boards I inspected were like working on a 40 story building 40 layers of copper tracts .I do believe I save this project many times with my call out.

    The targeting radar is in the nose. I know most are, when I asked the pilot for more info, he clamed up. but if you look at it, the leading edge of the wing, starts at the top of the fuselage, and slants almost to the bottom. it may be ugly, but I love it. I did hate when the rear gunner would leave his gun on. every time I walked around the plane, it would fallow me. That was creepy.

  • @toasty_roro

    The "smoke" is actually caused by the colder exit thrust, or exhaust, coming out of the engines. This is because they are water injected J57s, like most B52 bombers have. So what you are seeing is actually the thrust coming out of the engine, then fading away as it cools.

    Beast is ALWAYS trimmed 2 degrees nose down for flight. Heavyweight or light before landing she is always 2 degrees nose down. Just the way she flies; ask an AC about it. I was just a gunner and they never told us why. I guess it was because of fuel load and CG considerations, but we always flew that way.

    It produces a tremendous amount of lift. To maintain a particular altitude, you have to nose down so as to prevent the aircraft climbing. When loaded with 40 tons of bombs, you don't have this problem for the obvious reason.

    "thrust" is a mechanical force, it is not something you can see. This is black and can therefore only be carbon particles (same as you get from diesel engine exhaust).
    The water content of exhaust gases can only be visible at very high altitude where it condenses (contrails).

    This is a B-52H (BUFF), the last model of the series and the only model to get fans (A-G model BUFFs had '50s era turbo jets). The fans on the H's are early 1960's vintage, back when jet engines were a lot smokier and not nearly as "thrusty" as more modern fans. hence the need for eight of them on the BUFF. There have been several proposals to re-engine the eight fans on the H's with four modern fans, but so far nothing has come of it.

    She's nose down because her wings are swept back so far that her center of lift is slightly aft of her center of gravity, making her nose down in level flight. The affect is accentuated when the pilot increases flaps and throttles in this flyby. Most airplanes have center of lift slightly forward of center of gravity which makes them fly slightly nose up.

  • @Mylitla
    @Mylitla 12 лет назад

    @GeoSciful The AOA (wing angle of attack) is positive, even though the aircraft is climbing nose low. The wing is mounted with a significant pitch vs the fuselage. It works out to make sense at altitude, but it looks weird low and slow.
