  • The Mars Attacks action figures were released in 1996 by Trendmasters. One of the ways Trendmasters got their toys to stand out was to bundle floppy disks with their figures, which had little PC games on them. I’m sure some of you watching will remember these Mars Attacks figures and these Mission Disks will spark some nostalgia in you. And I love that. I don’t have any nostalgia for these. They’re brand new to me. And I still think they’re fantastic.
Stoked is very much about looking at weird bits of pop culture ephemera from the 1990s and 2000s. I think you’d have to work hard to find something more iconically 90s than a floppy disk bundled with a movie tie-in action figure. And you can enjoy these yourself to, with the links below.

Those transparent green ploppy discs are gorgeous! These simple games packed in with action figures look like these things were created with such love. Thank you for covering this kind of stuff, Matty. No one else is doing it like you.

I don't think anyone else wants to haha. As long as I keep unearthing all this weird physical format stuff, I'll keep showing it to you 🎉

Holy shit.. WAR PLANETS! I wanted that so badly as a kid, but I never got any of the toys. You just unlocked a 25 year old core memory.

I did not, in fact, know that Mars Attacks was based on a trading card game. Also good on you for archiving these, it's a weird little slice of 90s history

There's a great book of the card art, and a link in the description to a PDF on archive. I didn't think archiving pack-in floppy disks would be my life's work, but here we are. I didn't choose the floppy life...

It actually wasn't a trading card GAME per say. It predates that by about 30 years. They were meant as an alternative to sports cards. They even came with a piece of bubblegum! Because trading cards have no ratings board, the creators could basically make the cards as R rated as they wanted.

I had all 3 of these toys. I remember getting them in Christmas of 96. I still have the picture of them along with everything we got that year. My brother and I were obsessed with Mars Attack.

I had no idea that there were 90s Mars Attacks toys. I knew that the movie was based on trading cards from the 60s that had some cool gnarly art, I knew about the Mars Attack comics, & I even knew about its sister series Dinosaurs Attacks & the crazy lore that accompanied it.

    • @MattyStoked

A good fact about Dinosaurs Attack: that was the film Tim Burton originally wanted to make. But then Jurassic happened. So he pivoted to Mars Attacks instead!

Thank you for making this video! Watched it twice already. You posted within seconds of me searching for it. I still have all 3 discs but unable to play them these days. Used to play them quite often back in the day. I also still have 1 ID4 floppy on my gaming shelf. It was really a nostalgic trip watching this. Brought back quite a few memories.

That's really weird, how spooky! 👻 Glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for the kind comment. If you wanted to play them, you can set up a Windows emulator relatively easily, and the .img files are linked in the description 😁

I've never been so sold on so many things. I'm on the hunt for these toys and cards now!

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  Год назад +1

The cards are _awesome_. There is a Topps hardback book which has all the artwork, plus plenty of additional material. Probably cheaper and easier than collecting 60+ year old collector cards :D

These are based on the Topps comics Mars Attacks rather than the movie. As well as the cards as you said.
A funny thing about the robot spiders in the comic is they are indeed piloted by severed heads as you said, the spiders are massive tho.

The scene where the dude gets his finger bit off scared me into staying away from those toys at the time. Plus, Jurassic Park. My toys of choice!

There was a line I edited out of the voiceover, which was something like "..Kenner were focusing more on Batman and Jurassic Park which are still pretty much the coolest toys ever". So I definitely understand 🦖
