This is the best and most complete video I have found on this topic. I just did this to my boat and was my first experience. I wish I found this video prior because it was a frustrating learning experience. The difference contours especially near the bow were challenging to say the least!
Great job way to stay cool during the difficult spots, that's half the battle keeping your cool and just take your time. loved the vid very professional. Thanks for sharing.
Anytime there are decals on a boat for an extended period the area where they are is protected and the gelcoat will be like brand new but the rest of the hull will be a eroded. It leaves an area where the decals are ever so slightly raised. Unless you really were at the hall and sand and buff the area there is nothing you can do about it. I have lettered boats where they have changed the name several times and you can see each name that was on the boat previously.. I love your videos they are great.
Hi! I want to wrap my boat and some of the wrap will be below the water line for extended periods of time. Which product did you use? Is your wrap under water? How has it held up to this?
What is the name of the vinyl wrap that you used. I need to buy some gloss black for 18 foot pontoon boat. Thank you in advance. You did a great job on your boat. There looks terrific.
I'm curious what the "shield guard" is that you always use. It looks super useful usually and I want to get it, but I can never find it on vvivid when I look. Is there a different name for it? Thanks
Just go to vvividhq.com and search for “Shield Spray Post Wrap” and you’ll find it. It’s just a spray that is applied after the wrap is done to protect it. From the product description -> VVIVID SHIELD is a unique protective sealant designed to shield vinyl wrap and plastic coatings from UV rays, scratches, cracking and weathering.
Great job again dude. I feel bad and want to jump in and help when i see that an extra set of hands would save you some headache but you pull through as always .
Looks good, was curious about your comments as to why the vinyl doesnt like to stick to the gel-coat? Could this be from contaminates and waxes/polishes being embedded in the gelcoat over the years? To explain why you are seeing the decals you had cleaned off prior to the wrap. The decals actually seal and protect the gelcoat over the years and years of corrosion and weather exposure. SO, when these decals are removed, looking at that particular area in the right lighting, you can see that the gelcoat is raised where the decals/stickers once were compared to the rest of the boat. Sometimes, not always this is also a way to tell how many different owners or states the boat has been registered in when looking at the boats registration sticker area and tracing out the raised letters/numbers
Adam E if I’m correct, gelcoat has wax in it for curing purposes. Some don’t, but most do. The wax also helps in removal of molds when layup is complete. Remember, boats are built from the outside in. The gelcoat is the first part of the hull.
@@stevefarmer6607 Correction, Gel coat has NO Wax in it. If it did, the next layer (layup) would not bond to it. Wax is applied to the mold before the Gel coat for mold release. Wax is put in resin to cut off oxygen so that the surface will cure otherwise the resin will remain tacky for bonding to the next coat during lamination. Mold release serves that function. Resin WITH wax is used for a surfacing resin (outside of a mold) so that it will cure and can be sanded as the wax rises to the surface and seals off the air for a complete cure. I use to repair fiberglass boats and in order to repair surface (Gel coat) damage, we would spray Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA), which is water soluble, over the new Gel coat surface that would then dry to get the Gel coat to cure for sanding and final polishing. This is only for Polyester Boat Resins. Epoxy is another story and is seldom used in boats except when used for Carbon Fiber applications. Because of it's weight, Epoxy is used almost exclusively in aircraft and does not require a wax for curing.
Hey CK bad ass work as always. Hey man I'm still having trouble with my corners, it seems that I maybe overwork the corners & end up with very miner fingering, & I really want to tighten them up. Hands on training with u would do the trick, I've watched all ur vids on corners multiple times, & I get better with each panel I wrap. Can u do a really in-depth vid on corners? Thanks man, amazing work
Ck you definitely have talent brother. Question is there anything you need to put on the wrap or on the ends of the wrap from it not coming off? I have a small flatts boat. Ty Jeff
I bought from Grimco too but in Montreal.. and if you want to buy by 1yard you can do it with Poly Alto. They are in Quebec city. Search on google. They sell Avery, Hexis, tols a many many products. :) I hope it will help you
The pin striping lines are formed right in the mold. The decals protect the gelcoat from oxidation therefore leaving a pristine gelcoat embossing as the gelcoat eroded around it.
Christian - I have a pontoon boat in excellent shape, except the exterior vinyl graphics are in not the best shape. The pontoon boat is 13 years old, so before the trend today of fiberglass sides. Has the corrugated aluminum sides with the graphics on that. Looked at new graphics, looked at paint. Then ran across your boat video and wrap. If i decided on some nice wrap, like the metallic type you used on this video, or maybe a carbon fiber look, what would be your recommendation of the type and brand of vinyl wrap for a first timer? Thanks in advance.
I've done names, registration numbers and boot stripes/highlights,graphics etc and it does very well.I have never had a warranty problem or comeback.Surface prep is KEY because some waxes cause problems but other than that it does good.
It holds up fine. After watching this video I put it on my ski. I rided almost exclusively in saltwater and no problems. Edgeseal tape is a must though. Btw, one really nice thing about the wrap is that minor dock scuffs can be smoothed out with a little bit of heat. Did I mention it looks amazing!
how durable is the wrap whenever the boat hits the water? salt or freshwater lakes/sea. if you keep a bin nearby to throw all your trash in you wont be needing to check your shoes for sticky stuff :D
That was awesome!!! Thanks for uploading that video, I was wondering the whole time while watching your videos wrapping cars if the wrap would stand the water and stick well to the gel coat. I have an old project boat and 2 wave runners that I want to do a vinyl wrap on it. Now I’m more confident and I’m going forward to get it done for this summer. I’d like to see more details on how you set up the front tape that you mentioned, since the front of the boat is the one that meet both ends and will get all the stress from the water. Was that Avery brand on the vinyl ? Thanks for the video bro, it looks amazing!! Keep it up! JPSPROCK
Hi! Just subscribed to your channel! I purchased a 20ft Phantom cuddy cabin boat. It’s a good solid boat with cosmetic issues, one being the paint on the haul is pealing. How should I prepare the surface to eventually wrap it. Please help😀
How durable is this wrap? Does it need waxing to help add to durability? I’m assuming it will oxidize or degrade... any idea how long until then? Thanks
To get rid of the old letters showing you should have carefully wet sanded the letters and it would have made it a lot smoother then buffed and then put the wrap on. That's what I did and no letters or decal are seen through. I knew it would show through if I didn't do that first. Yes it's a lot of extra work still looks good
Holy shit.. A boat! Nice. My friend had his boat detailed once, that's without vinyl unfortunately. Never again he said. I think it was like $2500 bucks.
Omg I do a full detail and I only charge $400. Unless the boat is really rough shape and if the boat is bigger then 30'. I enjoy detailing making boats and cars and trucks look there best show room finish.
you should have cut the the black wrap in half "length wise" to minimize wasted material.that way you could have done both sides of the boat with only one sheet... just my 2 cents! great work though..boat looks really nice!
Looks nice till you hit a crappy boat dock or some part of the boat trailer guide or a dock bump rail that scratches it up or tears it , Theres a reason boats are gel coat, its durable and flexible , Look what happens to regulr decals and graffics on almost any boat so lets cover the whole boat in that stuff , seems like a really bad idea unless you really watch it when your docking or loading it on a trailer with side bolsters but i guess its easy to repair just put a new piece of Vynl on
What does a job like that cost? Also, thanks. I'm wrapping my sailboats this spring - using Vivid, viper green. Can you please answer me these questions?: How often should I change my blade roughly? Does applying heat produce an increased adhesion or tack? I've watched a ton of your vids and I may have missed the answers to my questions, so I'm sorry for that. Just curious about your thoughts on the whole deal.
This might with the gel coat problem, all gel coat has wax in it forever..use a gel coat paint prep to de-wax it like interlux 202.. it's so good you can't buy it in California.. hahaha
Why so much waste? Seems like you could have cut that piece down and save the pieces? Guessing you would have a million pieces. I would have to try and saved half of that black sheet. For another project. Especially black being so common. I hate waste sorry.
This is the best and most complete video I have found on this topic. I just did this to my boat and was my first experience. I wish I found this video prior because it was a frustrating learning experience. The difference contours especially near the bow were challenging to say the least!
Well, welcome to his channel, all his videos are like that haha :) Love the channel!
Great job way to stay cool during the difficult spots, that's half the battle keeping your cool and just take your time. loved the vid very professional. Thanks for sharing.
You killed it.. I have this exact boat and plan to wrap it towards the end of the summer.
Awesome bro! Thanks for sharing! I have 2 older boats and now you’ve given me some options! Will be watching for more videos!

Smooth sailing 🚤🚤🚤🚤 , always a pleasure sailing with you , John
The wrap job is worth more then the boat. Nice work as usual CK.
Thanks for the perfect tutorial
Could you just explain how you join the vinyl at the front part of the hull?
Many thanks
Alain
CK You Made it look so easy thank you so much it was awesome can’t wait to see you do the car
Very pretty enjoyed it can’t wait to see you do the car
I just completed a wrap on my 18’ Glastron boat. This video was a great resource.
Hi! I want to wrap my boat and some of the wrap will be below the water line for extended periods of time. Which product did you use? Is your wrap under water? How has it held up to this?
Boat would of looked good black
that boat looks sharp! nice job bringing her back to life!
That looks really good, Christian.
Thanks for the vid Christian! Is there any protocol for keeping the vinyl from
Lifting in water environment? Edge sealer of some kind?
Man this guy knows his trade 👍🏻👌🏻
I'm from Brazil and I find your work very good.👍
I have the exact same boat, 1992 Bayliner Capri 3.0 , such a great look
I have the 1991 force 90 horce I would like this done as well

Fantastic video. Any special prep of the gel coated fiberglass?
I think he just cleans it, then wipes it with isopropyl alcohol.
Has anyone figured out what Shield Guard is used on this? about to wrap a boat w high gloss and want to purchase the same product. Thanks!
Any type of glue or something like that. Or does it just stick that well and the water doesn't make it fall off
how much will you charge to do same job on 19ft boat byliner open bow? with material?
Looks good, was curious about your comments as to why the vinyl doesnt like to stick to the gel-coat? Could this be from contaminates and waxes/polishes being embedded in the gelcoat over the years?

Prep is key,I mainly do boats and you have to strip the wax,

Is it the same type of material as a car vinyl? Or it something special and more durable?
Ck you definitely have talent brother. Question is there anything you need to put on the wrap or on the ends of the wrap from it not coming off? I have a small flatts boat.
Ty
Jeff
Some shops use edges sealer but I don't believe it's necessary if the film is installed properly
Hi CK! Love watching your videos...hoping to do something like that to my own boat..how did you clean the boat before laying the vinyl!?
Love your videos and you do great work,
Awesome video. Definitely learned some things
Well done and very helpful !
What is the ambient air temperature and humidity in the garage? Or that doesn’t matter?
I bought from Grimco too but in Montreal.. and if you want to buy by 1yard you can do it with Poly Alto. They are in Quebec city. Search on google. They sell Avery, Hexis, tols a many many products. :) I hope it will help you
Thank you, I'll definitely check it out
Thanks

Also you wrapped over the boat's VIN # that is molded into the starboard stern, it must be readable.

a few years on now, so looking back would you recommend 3m seam tape be used on the edge that is in the water the most?
Do you add any cermaic clear coat to further protect the wrap? IF NOT...what do you reccomend as a process for this?
How well will the blue vinyl hold up in water?
Michael Guerin I was wondering the same thing
saltwater and sun cqn be worse i think
I've done names, registration numbers and boot stripes/highlights,graphics etc and it does very well.I have never had a warranty problem or comeback.Surface prep is KEY because some waxes cause problems but other than that it does good.

Axel can you provide link on what edge seal tape your talking about? :-)
I really liked this video! What kind of tape did you use at the top line, to trim the vinyl?
He recommended this off brand stuff in another video.

how durable is the wrap whenever the boat hits the water? salt or freshwater lakes/sea. if you keep a bin nearby to throw all your trash in you wont be needing to check your shoes for sticky stuff :D
At 52 minutes into the video you trimmed the bottom with what looks like a string. How and what is that?
Knifeless tape
can you put a link where you get this material from ? thanks

jpsrock so did you do it?

Holy Shit! That's my exact make and model and year of boat! I'm on youtube looking for boat wraps, and boom this video pops up! Weird...
Navy diamond blue, love it
How durable is this wrap? Does it need waxing to help add to durability? I’m assuming it will oxidize or degrade... any idea how long until then? Thanks
It was my understanding that you are suppose to use an edge sealer solution on boats cause of the constant drag from water (?)
incorrect
This guy said he was going to go over all the edges with seam tape.
How much would just the blue part cost on a 17.5 boat?
Love boat wrapping
I have the same boat geez would like it get done How much does this cost

How does it hold up against salt water?
Also dont stress to much about the background noise. I block it out pretty well and can hear you fine
where do I get shield guard?
Such an awesome helpful video... Thanks
What is the knifeless tape
Hey buddy don’t have to worry about it thinking just get your Boston whaler
perfect work, very good
Great this makes me want to buy a boat, just so I can wrap it ......lol
its very easy to just take off the pulley, loosen the strap and the the bolt and it will just slide out,or just the u bolts that hold it to the trailer
Man...anyone have an idea what this would cost in Canada?
Where can I get a quote for a 17' boat?
what brand of vinyl do you use? 3m?
How much would it cost to wrap something like this?
What was the tool called that you cut the back tape with?
Do you use car vinyl for marine boat wraps?
Loved it
How long until someone gets you to wrap their private plane? (It won't be long)
you should have cut the the black wrap in half "length wise" to minimize wasted material.that way you could have done both sides of the boat with only one sheet... just my 2 cents! great work though..boat looks really nice!
what did you charge for that type of wrap done on the boat??
Is this your first boat Christian?
What did you USE to SEAL the SEAMS?
nice job!
Even though this 'eats into a tonne of material...' vinyl is cheaper than a paint job by far?
Where can I buy a full roll of marine vinyl. Is there a difference in car vinyl and Marine vinyl. I need 44' x 18" wide of vinyl
Isn't wrap bad for salt water
What brand do you use for marine vinyl?
What does this protect?
Looks nice till you hit a crappy boat dock or some part of the boat trailer guide or a dock bump rail that scratches it up or tears it , Theres a reason boats are gel coat, its durable and flexible , Look what happens to regulr decals and graffics on almost any boat so lets cover the whole boat in that stuff , seems like a really bad idea unless you really watch it when your docking or loading it on a trailer with side bolsters but i guess its easy to repair just put a new piece of Vynl on

Shoot avery is more agressive then 1080. I love 3m do not like using avery at all
doesnt seem like it will stick
Just wondering, what are you charging for this?
Material and $150 an hour on top of that. So add the hours and the cost and you have the price
Before you roll out the vinyl put pieces of tape all down the boat so you have one less thing in your hands and you don't slow down.
Awesome!
Don’t worry about the boat sinking just buy a Boston whaler’s
SO fuckin' cool !!
that car on the right tho..... :)
Sticker boy. lol
11:02 Why So Serious lol looks good buddy
dont let the 🚤 sink 😉
walk up and down the boat and tear off tabs ahead of time bro...tack them along the side.
I fish in salt water
A bright or darker neon green pin stripe would have made it pop on the black edge
Why so much waste? Seems like you could have cut that piece down and save the pieces? Guessing you would have a million pieces. I would have to try and saved half of that black sheet. For another project. Especially black being so common. I hate waste sorry.
