Aditya Anil It goes back to when women in high society would have to be helped into their clothes, men would button their own clothes but the maids would button the women’s clothes thus the buttons were put on the opposite side.

Women in high society would have their clothes buttoned by hand maids who were often right handed meaning that the buttons were put on the opposite side to make it easier for another person buttoning their shirt. Men would button their own, thus it had to be easy for them to do from their side of the shirt.
