Wonderfully told! Your inflections were excellent, hand motions well chosen. I especially enjoyed hearing this tale in your accent. And your ending - perfect!

Are there any books of Scottish/Irish tales like this you'd recommend?

Thank you for your question. There are too many books to choose from but I would recommend that you check out the Scottish Storytelling Centre. It’s a place full of past and new stories. They sell great books in their bookshop, put on performances, exhibitions and host cafe readings from storytellers young and old.

Hmm. This is a rather bowdlerized version, and time changed too.
First of all, they don't just walk about while Tam Lin shows Janet where to pick flowers. Janet gets pregnant by Tam Lin. That's why she is keen to get him away from the Elf Queen. She needs her baby's father.
Second: The ballad refers to a rose being plucked - just the one, not a bunch of flowers, and this is for a particular reason.. This is not very difficult code for Janet's virginity being taken by Tam Lin.
Third: The rescuing of Tam Lin takes place on All Hallows Eve, or Samain, the Celtic New Year. This is the night on which the borders between the Elf world and the human one grow most thin. Which allows for people/creatures from the different worlds to pass into the other (hence all the costumes of Halloween). Also, Janet waits at a cross roads, another site loaded with other worldly connections.
One may say...do these points matter. But they do, stories such as this, and others collected in ballad or story form have come down to us from so long ago, it is a true shame to dilute them, or just change elements of them for no reason. Usually things occur as they do for particular reasons. If one removes or changes so many elements of the story, it loses coherence and meaning.

Wow. Thank you for words and insights. It would be better to discuss these fully with Lari. Here is the link to her website www.laridon.co.uk

I’m going, and look for flowers to pick.
