Loved it, but 12 platoon were in all round defence not an ambush position, there was also no mention of the role of the RNZA 161 Bty or the US medium Arty regt that helped in fire support. I am an ex RAInf officer with 27 years service, and I had the privelage to have known and to have served with a number of the guys who were in various platoons in D coy 6RAR at this battle.

I don't know why but reading this made me look up an uncle (long lost. Family stuff) I always fondly remembered as a kid. So quiet I could never remember his voice. I wondered what his deployment. A decent search and I found not only that he was 6RAR but he's still going strong. Don't know if he was at Long Tan. Never t a liked of his service. Never so much as witnessed him talk to his other veteran brother. Let alone his service. I'm starting to suspect why he was always reserved. If he was there.....I'm surprised he was the beautiful smiling uncle he was. But his quietness makes more sense. As always thanks for being a Anzac and looking after each other. And trust me, the average aussie always remembers NZ when talking service. I can only imagine what the RAR think. Thank again.

You may have missed the part where 11 platoon actually called the artillery directly onto there position. Otherwise, this is really good! Thank you ☺

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm 98% certain the the riff raff refused to fly because of the monsoon weather conditions. The chopper that dropped ammo boxes wrapped in blankets was an Army Aviation Corp observer chopper. Due to weight considerations the pilot flew solo and had to kick out the ammo. I think he got a DFC for his efforts.

Love the animation. Lack of audio is not a problem. Research says background musing impairs learning, even if it is a bit more entertaining. Could replace ext with narration, but this is just fine!

Great and detailed animations. Though I would have liked to see some actual voice and if it's just the Google translator. Just a voice narrating the events.
That would have been nice. I thought my sound system was broke for a while and had to check another video just to be sure xD

Excellent animation and particularly good because there's no irritating 'non-music' background. This is information, not entertainment.
Just one small point, Ian: at 11:33, you refer to '12 Platoon's ambush position'. This is militarily incorrect; a defensive position (in this instance, particularly) cannot carry out an ambuscade. The correct term and action here is not 'ambush'; which is a completely different military action, but 'defensive position'. In this battle, the attacking force was NOT ambushed by 12/11 Platoon - they were exposed to withering defensive fire; a very different action indeed. For some reason, particularly among American military writers and presenters etc, there seems to be confusion about using these terms correctly. Too much Hollyweird?! No Australian soldier or unit would confuse them as they are absolutely and completely different in terms of intention, preparation and execution. Other than that, thank you and well done.

    • @flowerpower8722

I didn't hear anything. I thought the Kiwis were embedded as a combined Anzac force, ie, not acting separately. Can be corrected of course.

This puts a lie to the Vietnamese claim that they ambushed D coy. It was an encounter battle.
It amazes me how much bullshit and rumour was put out about this battle even within the Australian army at the time. I know of three contemporary accounts by officers involved back at TF who believe to this day different things happened for different reasons. Back in the ranks I was told by rumour that D coy walked into a box ambush (which could almost be deduced from the layout of units and the direction of attacks).
The all round VC attacks were classic probing attacks (recon in force). I'm sure the VC commander was confused by the layout of the contacts - he didn't know what size unit he was dealing with.
