    And they're doing even more than that. Blake Morgan, a tenor and arranger in the group, told us in a Stay At Home Choir guest session that they also pay particular attention to the tuning of their harmonies. Did you know, for instance, that if you lower the mediant note in a chord very slightly you get a cleaner sound? They interst themselves in various tunings and harmonics as well. Really geeky, interesting stuff.
    I have the album, Enchanted Isle, from which this comes. I heartily recommend you get it in 24-bit FLAC as I did. It's so worth it.

    I totally agree IK!! How can a person not start to quiver and tear up a bit within the first minute and a half listening to this purely exquisite performance? The melancholic yet wanting lyrics (it's worth looking them up) alone are so touching. And then combining the words with those beautiful harmonies is pretty much awe inspiring. Thank you for showing this Jeff 👍😀

    What a moving song and mind-blowing arrangement and performance and then seeing you being overwhelmed by it - just love it! The part sung in Gaelic sounds so beautiful. Well, just like with Snarky Puppy, you simply can't go wrong with voces8. Everything they touch turns into a magical experience. I am super glad and excited that you found them and am looking so forward to seeing more reactions of them such as their renditions of The Deer's Cry & Nunc Dimitis by Arvo Pärt or Sleep by Eric Whitacre. @@StrateleStudios I think the piece works, musically, because of the contrast between Sibéal’s melismatic vocalizing and the steady, solid, sustained and yet crystal-clear tones of Voces8. The arrangement is beautifully constructed and the sound engineers must be tops-- I love it.

    An interesting piece of information; this was arranged by Tommy Pacey, the wonderful deep bass singing bass on his own arrangement. I just discovered that after singing with Voces 8 for 7 years, he left the group after the concert of the Christmas season. Voces 8 has already introduced the new bass.

    • @richardtodd3453
      @richardtodd3453 Год назад +1

      Sorry folks, the singer arranger's name is Jonathon, not Tommy. It is what I get for posting late at night!.

    • @larsem8
      @larsem8 Год назад +1

      That is not correct. The bass singer is Jonathan Pacey, and the arrangers name is Joshua Pacey. Similar names but not the same person

    • @richardtodd3453
      @richardtodd3453 Год назад +3

      @@larsem8 Thank you for the correction. I, like a dummy, saw the last name and thought it was Jonathon. Earlier today, I found the correct information. Jonathon is the excellent bass singer that just completed 7 years singing with Voces 8. It is Jonathon's brother that did the arrangement of Carrickfergus. Sorry for the confusion.

    A beautiful piece beautifully sung by Voces 8. The group has been singing for at least 15 years. The personnel changes, but the sound stays the same. The two basses are the two men on the far left. The tall blond is a superb soprano named Andrea, who has been with the group over 10 years. The blond soprano has departed and been replaced by another fine singer named Molly. There is one alto and a counter tenor, Barnaby Smith, the groups director. The Voces 8 repertoire is huge and diverse. I have heard them in concert twice. Before attending the concerts, I wondered if there was over dubbing or over modern tricks. Both concerts ran to two hours, and every piece was beautiful, and moving, and done from memory. In both cases they filled a large sanctuary with sound. I offer you a few of my favorite Voces 8 videos: Bring us oh God- ruclips.net/video/skwx_n8DNXc/видео.html; This Is My Song-ruclips.net/video/eXooDIWVRZs/видео.html; London By Night-ruclips.net/video/xMs2KpllYW8/видео.html; Salvation is Created-ruclips.net/video/n8BwsZqTyr0/видео.html. Hey, it's been a while.
    VOCES8 are truly amazing. And this is a live performance too - not a bum note to be seen. And choral music is extremely prone to that wobbling effect, especially on 3rds. But these guys are pulling the barber shop trick where they lower the major 3rd and raise the minor 3rd to make the tuning more just.
    PS: If you're looking for more VOCES8 I would suggest anything composed by Eric Whitacre, which is in the same vocal style as this piece. The group has recorded with Jacob Collier too. It's the first track of Djesse vol. 1, if I remember correctly.

    This Voces8 with guest singer Sibéal performance is mindblowing, and I have kept going back listening to it time after time, often with tears in my eyes. I listen to the group especially when being a bit low, because it makes me feel hopeful for humanity again. I mean - such a display of human capability makes me feel it can´t all go to hell ... You point out the low tones, and it´s incredible (ok speakers/headphones is a must). Unfortunately the bass singer has left the group recently. Let´s hope they find another great voice to replace his, but I can´t really belive there is one as good out there.
    If you want to revisit VOCES8 I suggest "A boy and a girl" composed by Eric Withacre. It contains beautiful disharmonic neuances but is also angelic.
