Buffalo Big Board Surfing Classic 2023_Hawaiian Opening Ceremony

I created this for Brian Keaulana who is missing Hawaii and his dad's contest because he is helping to produce the Jason Momoa Chief Of War film. There are some shaky scenes in it but wanted to capture all of it so he could hear and feel the spirit of Makaha as he is in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
Here is the opening ceremony of Uncle Buffalo Keaulana's Big Board Surfing Classic in honor of the late and last princess of Hawaii. Abigail Kekaulike Kawananakoa.

Thanks a million for this. Ever since I met Uncle Buff around 98 or 99 he’s been an inspiration. He still is. Look how stoic he is. How much he’s loved and respected. How good his attitude is. I was living next to Antz at those round houses that used to be there and I’d surf right out in front of the house (Klausmeyers, I think the break was called) or Makaha side. Uncle Buff and the other Uncles and Aunties would always let me get a couple waves. I love that place so much, and I miss all my ohana there especially my Hawaiian keikis.
I have a particular memory of Uncle Buff. Must have been 99 or maybe 2000 and I was helping him set up some scaffolding and some other things for the contest, and he told me I should surf in his contest! I was extremely honored to be asked that, especially because I’m a haole that wasn’t that great a surfer. But I had several big boards and always smiled so I guess he liked that. I’ll always remember how great that made me feel. I’ll always remember how this legend made me feel welcome. Back then I used to wrestle with his grandsons right there in the water in front of the house! I think one of them I read became a lifeguard, too. Westside Oahu will always be uppermost in my heart. Thanks again for videoing this and posting it for the world to see how awesome and beautiful y’all are out there! Love and respect from the mainland.
