Gah, I LOVED this game so much!! This intro has to be one of the best in any video game I have seen. One thing I loved about Myst, it also had a really great story for you to follow (the graphics though were state of the art at that time, still amazing and the puzzles were worth figuring out!) Remembering the story of what his sons did in the previous Myst games, when he says to leave the past behind him once and for all, just made you feel for the man!

Myst, Riven, and Exile will always be the best games of the series for me. They just fit perfectly. Myst was a fantastic beginning, and Riven was a phenomenal ending to the franchise, for me, but Exile is like an awesome piece of DLC almost, an extra taste. I remember I sat with my wife on Friday evening and started this game. We finished it on Sunday night and it was the best game I ever played. Still remember it like it was yesterday, but not 20 years ago.
I still remember when my year 5 form teacher got my entire class to write a description of that opening desert scene... I've looked for this game for years now and I've finally found it...
That passage Atrus is writing reads like a diary entry, but he signs it like it's a letter. Is it supposed to be the last page or so of a larger letter that he sends to the Stranger, inviting them to visit Tomahna so he can show them Releeshahn?
This game has amazing puzzle design - each age feels so real and organic. It has good characters and emotions but what you actually do in the game seems lacking. You just kind of do the learning ages for no reason. You're not really learning anything overall - you understand Saavedro's torment but that's about it. Riven is great because the age is occupied by real people - you use their technologies to get to where you want. It's all real and not just puzzle for its own sake. Still good though

Something that had me wondering though... how was the Stranger able to find Atrus again? The last we saw of them was falling into the Star Fissure as the Age of Riven collapsed around them. Although I guess one explanation is that some time after landing (we know the Stranger easily survived that fall) the Stranger found the Book that Atrus brought with him to Riven to extract Catherine, and from there, followed Atrus' trail to Tomanha.
@ilikemario8 I dont know which cliff but i was just playing and when trying to make all those lamp post things face eachother on that starting place i turned around and there was this silhouette of a guy on one of the cliff edges looking down at me like saavedro says in his diary

This title affected me so much, that despite never even having made it past the first Age, it cemented the series as one of my favorites to this day.
the Myst series is a treat for the eyes and ears; it's one of the things that make me grateful for my sight and hearing

That was Atrus, he left behind the Tomanha linking book so Saavedro could come in to attack.

I think the creators of Aura: Fate of the Ages ripped off Myst 3 in more ways than one, intro and all.
