Integral thermals are the best bet when it comes to reliably shooting because you don’t have to take it off every time you want to use it. Even simple thermal imagers can, and do shift your poa and poi, so it’s important to “zero” them, which many high end and military thermals allow you to do. Thermal optics combine two of the only items that seem to get cheaper over time, optics and electronics. That said, there's a fine line between price drops and legacy offerings. By that I mean there's not much difference between dropping prices and the device being dropped from production because commercial thermal optics are developing technology. Another point that may be important is availability. Most commercial thermal optics are coming in from China and those may not be available much longer. Not long ago China sold a bunch of thermal optics to Russia so I believe the State Department has stopped approving import permits for Chinese thermals. Those import approvals that were already approved will be honored so the pipeline of Chinese imports will be drying up pretty soon. I spent a few years looking at all of the available options and finally decided to buy before availability dropped off. I bought the RH25 but I did it before the last round of price drops. I expected prices to come down but I figured I'd been delaying way too long so I might as well make the move. I'm glad I did, even with the subsequent price drop.
Check out the Sightmark Wraith. It just had a significant price drop, to $1,700. For the money, it’s tough to beat. For an amazing thermal, for the money, check out the iRay rico hybrid 50, for $4k, Can be a standalone scope or a clip on. Even has a pic rail on top for mounting a red dot.
Im looking at the ShineNYX G1A. Its digital nightvision and thermal fused. The digital nv doesnt require an ir illuminator from what ive read and seen. Price is 4k
All digital night vision still requires IR illumination. It can’t amplify an absence of IR. Not saying it’s not good, but don’t buy into any marketing that says IR isn’t needed for an IR device.
I have a story that may change your mind about Thermals. When I was in the Navy, we were out doing our training ops and whatever else, OoD came out with these new Thermals. Now this was 1998.. OoD is to the right of the helm. And our subject, Razor, yes, he is called Razor, by everybody. This story may be why. Razor is at the helm. The OoD is playing with his new thermal toy. Enjoying the vast ocean with night vision, thermals and whatever else those things had built in. As he panned across the horizon he decided to see what the inside of the quarterdeck looked. as he panned over the Helm, he shouted. "Razor, put that away, that's fucked up." Razor was driving the ship and beating off at the same time.... All caught on thermal apperently.
I am unlikely to get any for the foreseeable future. I’d want something for threat ID without having to point the gun at everything though, so more monocular tube type.
I would love to see a review of the RL25 V1 for budget thermal. If you look, you can find it for sub 2000 and gives you 90% of the RH25. There’s also unconfirmed reports that if you use the reticle to zero through the lpvo, you can use it as a clip on.
You guys should do a video on Wilderness First Responder training. I'm told it makes a difference between getting cool jobs vs cutting/clearing brush in disaster relief. It is also generally just good to have for these circles.
Yes, but you can and should adjust the brightness to be a bit lower. You can also put the rubber eye cap on it to reduce the splash on your orbital socket when you’re viewing through it.
I use an iRay GL35 on an adm qd mount to pop on and off to scan with. I’m happy with it but it could definitely be better. I say bite the bullet and get a 640, you won’t be disappointed
@@strykeback1 we are not allowed to have integrated thermal/nightvision on our rifles. So nothing with a reticle. Only clipons on the weapons. Normal helmet mounted nvg/thermal are completely unregulated.
I have a vision issue that prevents me from using a red dot (the dot bleeds out unless I take the time to remove my glasses before shooting). However, I can use LPVO or iron sights with no issues. So I've been following that Viper 35, but I am dubious as to how well it holds zero going on and off the scope. What was your experience in this regard, and what's the maximum range you think you could reliably engage a man-sized target with it? Thanks!
It did hold zero even after we removed it and put it back on, which was awesome. Reliable engagement distance. Well, if it's holding zero, which it has been, I'd say as far as I can actually shoot. We could still spot a human at 800m and beyond. That being said, I'm not sure how well it would work once you start dialing or holding for distances beyond 3-400 yards. Time will tell. But so far, so good.
I’d think the most important factor when deciding on handheld or mounted. Would be what your looking @ & what’s looking @ you. If what your looking @ = threats than you need a solution for the threat. And if the threat is equal to you, it will not wait for you to sit down your handheld & retrieve your fire solution. And Damn sure isn’t going to wait for you to mount it to your rifle. All of that to say in combat, the handheld isn’t going to be very efficient.
Are there any good thermals for EOtech EXPS 3-4's on unity riser? I also have the G43 on a unity riser so is there one on the market that can user the magnifiers unity mount?
I'm waiting for clip ons to come down in price a little I think. I've got dual tube night vision for shooting and navigating and I've got a handheld AGM 384 monocular for scanning and right now I think that's enough for me
Depends on your distance to it and the brightness of the optic. You can usually spot it within 100 yards. We did a video on "Signature Reduction" and demonstrate what it looks like under nods.
Great content as usual guys. Just curious what you would recommend for a lower cost handheld only thermal? I have some use cases for a handheld for scanning. Hoping for clarity out to 200y.
15:25 I lol'd I'd like to get a thermal monocular just for hand-held use. I don't want to spend more than $800 though, and from what I've seen at that price or lower the image quality just isn't quite where I want it.
@dirty-civilian Any recommendations? I mean some ain't bad but I dunno, I wasn't very impressed by the image quality at sub $800 devices. I feel like I'd want at least 384 resolution but that's just kind of out of my price range from what I've seen.
For the RH25, the chinese clone of the oasys flip to side mount is rigid and has good lock up (get the left flip one that has a push button lock). Also I have made a bunch of accessories for the rh25 (lens protectors, obverse shoe, mounting shoes, and a usb to fisher power cord) and would love to send you guys a set.
If you are so concerned with your situation that you are wearing a plate carrier and a helmet, you should also be using the shielded eye cup on your night vision so everyone doesn’t see the light bouncing off your face
I feel like this video doesn’t even touch on the most important aspects that are desirable in a thermal… Actual detection ranges, true identification and detail at various ranges, micron levels and amount of image degradation, millikelvin ratings and range of temperature readings. There are so many more important aspects than “is it a clip on that I can hand hold?”
Have a nox35 usually just use handheld, kinda debated trying to sell it for 5k and just downgrade to something else with money leftover for other stuff. Really at the point i need less toys and more money in fixing my eyes and focusing on health as i approach "old"
You seriously need to talk about resolution though. 640x480 is the way to go. After all optics are all about seeing. A lot of RUclipsrs are showing 384x288 views at 50 yards or so that's not really good enough. Look at something 100 yd + and it's blurry where 640 is sharp. Sure you may pay a little bit more but it's well worth it.
This is true, with a caveat. The base magnification and size of the germanium lens matters too. I have a 1280 resolution Thor 5 XD, and it can see people at over 2 miles and cars at 5 miles on some nights. The range of thermal optic capabilities are insane.
If I am using the rh25 as a standalone unit and unlock to throw it on a Helmet and then pull it off the helmet to go back on the gun would that throw zero way off?
Does the Nitehog Viper 35 fit on Precision scopes or just LPVO's? seems like it would be a great option for my .308 but at that point I could only use it on my 45-70
Doubt it, plus you wouldn’t want it to without some sort of magnification because it would be too far from your eye to be helpful. I suppose you could use the flip to side mount and put it in front of a red dot with a magnifier behind it, but that’s stacking a lot of glass.
From personal experience: even a cheap Chinese NVP, which can work without IR illumination is better than nothing, and an average price Chinese thermal imager is better than a Russian military one. Therefore, use anything that allows you to see at night, except a flashlight or torch.
Im waiting until 1280 thermals come down in price. 1280 is so incredible Id have buyers remorse if I got a 640 I bought every sick TV as they came out over the years (flat screen, 1080, 3D, HD, 4K, Smart TV, etc) and paid $5-$6k for each one....now they are all $500-$1000. Technology is unlike a standard optic scope. Glass and polish does not improve anywhere close to circuit boards and shit. When 1280 comes down to $3k Ill jump in.
Pfft I don’t need a thermal to see how good lookin you fellers are.

Ye ol Diddy-vision 😂 14:59
The remote control comment @15:20 was golden.
lol because it’s true.
Too relatable
Drew's suppressor in this video motivates the f*** out of me.
I am unlikely to get any for the foreseeable future. I’d want something for threat ID without having to point the gun at everything though, so more monocular tube type.
There are solid handheld only units that are very affordable.
What about ATN Thor gen 4 or 5?
I would love to see a review of the RL25 V1 for budget thermal. If you look, you can find it for sub 2000 and gives you 90% of the RH25.
There’s also unconfirmed reports that if you use the reticle to zero through the lpvo, you can use it as a clip on.
Very cool.
You guys should do a video on Wilderness First Responder training. I'm told it makes a difference between getting cool jobs vs cutting/clearing brush in disaster relief. It is also generally just good to have for these circles.
So to be clear, clip on thermals will not work with EOtech red dots? Do you absolutely HAVE to have an LPVO to pair with a clip on?
It'll work, but you'll absolutely need a magnifier. Otherwise the thermal optic is too far from your eye to be useful.
Night Hog... Night Hawk sounds way cooler. From here on out you must call me Night Hawk! 😂
Glad this video just came out. Been looking into getting the RH25 here soon
It's a good unit!
So the original Sig Echo had a lot if light from the screen spill back onto the shooter’s face. Does the RH25 do similar in actual dark environments?
Yes, but you can and should adjust the brightness to be a bit lower. You can also put the rubber eye cap on it to reduce the splash on your orbital socket when you’re viewing through it.
I use an iRay GL35 on an adm qd mount to pop on and off to scan with. I’m happy with it but it could definitely be better. I say bite the bullet and get a 640, you won’t be disappointed
Waiting for NVision to drop new thermals. Going to be dope.
Greetings from Germany
I use a handheld thermal devise for detecting, and NV on the rifle
for hunting
I’m shocked Germany lets you run with some nice toys.
@@strykeback1 we are not allowed to have integrated thermal/nightvision on our rifles. So nothing with a reticle. Only clipons on the weapons. Normal helmet mounted nvg/thermal are completely unregulated.
Hey I need more of these to watch please and thankyou.
What’s that thing called? A Night shlong 45?
6:36
Thanks guys!
AGM Rattler. By far the best
Correct.
Are there any good thermals for EOtech EXPS 3-4's on unity riser? I also have the G43 on a unity riser so is there one on the market that can user the magnifiers unity mount?
Seems like the rh25 is the go-to.
it is the most versatile, but definitely not the best in any category.
I'm waiting for clip ons to come down in price a little I think. I've got dual tube night vision for shooting and navigating and I've got a handheld AGM 384 monocular for scanning and right now I think that's enough for me
That’s a good setup.
What do you guys think about ATN thermals? Seems like a very good image quality for the price.
AGM is a good option
Another amazing video
Are you guys going to Pepperbox in the future? You're the last one tying me to youtube, I'd love to see you there
How visible is the barrel end of an illuminated reticle emitter when viewed under night vision?
Depends on your distance to it and the brightness of the optic. You can usually spot it within 100 yards. We did a video on "Signature Reduction" and demonstrate what it looks like under nods.
@dirty-civilian Thanks
Cool! I'm making a series on low cost thermals right now.
We'll have to watch it!
I would like weapon mounted thermal optics without video and photo. Hand held i another thing. But on the gun I would like it as simple as possible.
Great content as usual guys. Just curious what you would recommend for a lower cost handheld only thermal? I have some use cases for a handheld for scanning. Hoping for clarity out to 200y.
The Knock off Noveske is adorable
at 5:15 can you tell me what shade of brown(cerakote?) that is that matches up with that b5 coyote brown
15:25 I lol'd
I'd like to get a thermal monocular just for hand-held use. I don't want to spend more than $800 though, and from what I've seen at that price or lower the image quality just isn't quite where I want it.
For handheld detection there are sub $1000 options that are decent. Still a lot of coin though.
@dirty-civilian Any recommendations? I mean some ain't bad but I dunno, I wasn't very impressed by the image quality at sub $800 devices. I feel like I'd want at least 384 resolution but that's just kind of out of my price range from what I've seen.
Got the rattler V2 I see you for 4 thousand dollars less
For the RH25, the chinese clone of the oasys flip to side mount is rigid and has good lock up (get the left flip one that has a push button lock).
Also I have made a bunch of accessories for the rh25 (lens protectors, obverse shoe, mounting shoes, and a usb to fisher power cord) and would love to send you guys a set.
We have the Chinese clone and it doesn’t hold zero at all.
Did you modify yours to lock tight?
@@dirty-civilian I did tighten a few screws but it was rather stiff strong lockup from the box.
I also found a non flip to the side oasys dovetail mount but that is at a different height over bore.
The unfortunate thing with Chinesium is questionable QC.
When are you guys going to add international shipping to your store?
Revamping shipping in Q1 to allow for this. Thanks for your patience! 🤙
@@dirty-civilian I look forward to placing an order!👍
Rix storm S3. $1800 and kicks ass
If you are so concerned with your situation that you are wearing a plate carrier and a helmet, you should also be using the shielded eye cup on your night vision so everyone doesn’t see the light bouncing off your face
The Bering Optics stuff for sub 2k is good
I feel like this video doesn’t even touch on the most important aspects that are desirable in a thermal… Actual detection ranges, true identification and detail at various ranges, micron levels and amount of image degradation, millikelvin ratings and range of temperature readings. There are so many more important aspects than “is it a clip on that I can hand hold?”
I scored a Guide TA-651 clip-on (640 rez, 50mm objective) for $2300 last month. Be patient, the deals ARE out there.
Completely unrelated question here, but, anybody know what the song is in the beginning? It's kind of a vibe!
Holosun thermal with a 3x magnifire looks great under night vision
What scope mount is that in the thumbnail?
Does the nitehog only fit to lpvo or will it also clip in to bigger objectives.
It will go on larger ones as well. Uses a bigger mounting ring.
Have a nox35 usually just use handheld, kinda debated trying to sell it for 5k and just downgrade to something else with money leftover for other stuff. Really at the point i need less toys and more money in fixing my eyes and focusing on health as i approach "old"
I am looking at a clip-on like the Nighthog to put in front of a holographic sight.👍
We have numerous thermal videos and all of them show examples at about 800y.
No lie I thought I'd be getting a Temu thermal review.
If I am using the rh25 as a standalone unit and unlock to throw it on a Helmet and then pull it off the helmet to go back on the gun would that throw zero way off?
It didn’t when we tested it. It held zero.
+1, haven't encounterd that problem yet.
@@dirty-civilian that’s good to hear Thankyou!
@@falconclaw_ thanks for the input! Definitely going to pick one up very soon. (My late Christmas present to myself lol)
Does the Nitehog Viper 35 fit on Precision scopes or just LPVO's? seems like it would be a great option for my .308 but at that point I could only use it on my 45-70
Yeah it has a larger adapter.
@dirty-civilian does it adapt too Red dots too? Like a Holosun 510
1280 is so incredible Id have buyers remorse if I got a 640
I bought every sick TV as they came out over the years (flat screen, 1080, 3D, HD, 4K, Smart TV, etc) and paid $5-$6k for each one....now they are all $500-$1000.
Technology is unlike a standard optic scope. Glass and polish does not improve anywhere close to circuit boards and shit.
When 1280 comes down to $3k Ill jump in.
How often do you scan and how often do you shoot at living things? Don’t cheap out on your scanner
