@Drag Strip Riot this video changed my life, I saw it just out of high school and ever since then I’ve done a bunch of painting projects, I learned how to paint, and I have to say this is the sole video that made me decide what I wanted to do, so thank you
In a world seemingly dominated by vinyl wraps and the like, it is extremely pleasing to see a true craftsman applying his trade, and to such a high degree. The expressions on the faces of the owners, along with their comments as they see more and more of the Vega, says quite a lot in regards to the quality of the work and the skills and artistry of the painter. It's definitely a lost art, and I can only hope that more and more people take an interest in it, and try to continue the tradition, if not to popularize it again. This is excellent work by a man who apparently loves what he does!!
Awesome! I am 57 and I remember the old dragsters and funny cars; the paint schemes were magical & crazy... and all done by hand! What a beautiful paint job!
it truly shows that you love what you do..i painted custom homes for many years till I got hurt bad and cant work anymore but never did let price or time dictate what my work looked like I always gave 110% ..what you are doing is truly a lost art I just now am getting going in airbrushing wanting to get some form of paint on my hands again and I want to be able to hand pinstripe as well..if I lived near you you would have to beat me to get me away from your shop ..you have probly forgotten more than most will ever know ty so much for the vid my hats off to you sir your simply amazing
Very well done! Enjoyed this immensely! Over the past 20 years or so I've seen first hand how hard you work each and every day, how very professional you have been over all these years, and very proud to have worked along side you on a few projects "Don" LOL! Wishing you continued success always!
Way beyond my meager talents. My greatest moment was one season back in the 70's,. At our local dirt track, at the end of the season the top car in each of the three classes sported my lettering. Even the sponsor logos coca cola, schlitz and shell on these cars I hand painted. Emmitt
Yea, they can get the wraps... and when it bubbles over the fenders and lifts at difficult edges and you can see it... go ahead, wrap your self in plastic... or, get it done and get no lifting, no bubbles, and no mistakes... this is awesome!!
Great video of a great story about a long time friend. Dan lettered several of my cars, some of them multiple times. Always excellent work, at a reasonable price.
We would love for you to letter our race car. It was great watching you work. We love old school lettering. My uncles 67 camaro was lettered by Funky Frank in the 70's and i will never forget it. I am going to look u up. GOD willing, we will all make it through these trying times here in New York and throughout the country and life can somewhat return to normal again. GOD bless and stay safe. Hope to see you soon. Thanks, John and Jeanine
Great job! Fantastic skills! There should be a book or books with all your work in it! Seriously this stuff is high art to me, I could just stare at it for days! They should get a photographer to go around to as many of you guys out there doing this stuff from pinstriping to lettering, airbrushing and all or most of the tricks of the trade. Or just mainly showing off the cars, people would eat it up!
Hi Drag Strip. great work and nice video. I want to do a badass motorcycle helmet with gold leaf but I have a series question I need help with.. what do I need to do to paint on top of gold leaf with water based paint out of an airbrush (Createx)?? obviously I cant sand the gold leaf so before I put paint on top do I spray some adhesion promoter on top of the gold leaf so the paint adheres or is it ok to simply jus lay the paint on top of the gold leaf???? also I will be using a 2 part clear once everything is done. thanks in advance for any advice !!!!!!
Wow. Awesome skills. Done the original hard way. Love it. And thanks for the memories, i remember seeing Big Daddy Don Garlitts and Don the Snake Prudomme at Great Lakes Dragway every labor day as a kid with pit pass
Vinyl was in use to mask off the lettering. The purpose of vinyl to aid in lettering ,NOT BE THE LETTERING. Good work . Nothing wrong with having a cutter.
I hear & SEE ya man very nice/beautiful work. It's nice to sort a meet another me life . Who's pleasure became his bread &winner. Having mastered & having the privilege to see and feel the gratification it gave to ones own as well as the many customers we've encountered threw out the years. Ran my Auto Body Shop. "LITTLE HAMMER" Auto Body & Restoration /Insurance vender ARA certified My hats off to ya! Keep Up The EXCELLENT WORK!!!!! Ps noticed you also have Avery different name of the place you've been established Mine. Nanaimo British Columbia Canada
Love this video! Great editing, great music - great interview - amazing paint job! Who knew that "watching paint dry" would be so fun! :) Way to go! Nailed it!
Excellent Job. I admire your talent and wish you well. Talent like yours is a lost art. Where are you located? With the Nostalgia Funny Car Boom.... I hope things are better for you in the future. Good luck.
old school is the best , no sign banners static cling graphics or magnetic lettering like fedex nascars and drag cars . sad hand letter is becoming a lost art because back then drag racing cars were nice enuff to be in car shows .
+stuart sullenbarger Thank you, and I will pass along your note to Dan. No, he did not letter Blew By You. Thank was done by a sign painter in Cleveland.
Got some questions...art brushes vs pinstriping brushes...is there anything wrong with using regular liner brushes with the long handles? The bristles aren't nearly as long on my art brushes as they are on kafkas Ive seen. would cutting the handles down improve anything? I don't have a local store to buy kafkas or macks, even 1shot I would have to mailorder. I'm trying to get my stuff from hobby lobby if i can. at least the things I don't already have in my art box.
That is some excellent work, my friend. LOVE IT!! Where do you get your gilding supplies? I have a cafe racer project I am working on and plan on doing some gold leaf accents on the paint. Do you have a preference of manufacturer?

That's awesome, Josh! I shared your comments with Dan! Best wishes for continued success in this field!

Thank you! I will share your kind words with Dan.
He should set up a workshop/class. Like a two day class on the weekend. Maybe a video series. Would love to learn his stencil techniques and such.
It’s sad to see this art form going away. I’m 35 (by today’s standards I’m old I guess) and I LOVE seeing real paint, real lettering, real striping.

I have the old Damn Yankee Cuda body sitting here at home, plan is to paint it back to how it was
Love your work
Dan does great work I bet he knows of another local pin striper back in the day from his town Jim Prohaska!! Great vid Dawn...#9....
Dan knocked that project out of the park! I will ask him about Jim. Glad you dug it, #9! ;-)
From Dan...."Yes, Jim was the area "King Pin" race car sign painter."
Very cool, Dawn! I really enjoyed this video, showing how things were done back in the day. Very well done! Thanks!
John
Thank you, John! This was a fun deal to work on with a great family friend!
Thank God someone can still letter with one shot.I did it for years but here on Jersey shore it's a lost computers took over &it looks horrible.
Vinyl was in use to mask off the lettering. The purpose of vinyl to aid in lettering ,NOT BE THE LETTERING. Good work . Nothing wrong with having a cutter.
A true craftsman.......thanks for sharing
BIG respect!!!
Beautiful craftsmanship!!!! Are there any DieCast or model kits of this car? Major kudos to the Master of a 'Lost Art'
Bad fuckin ass! I know people take the easy way out now but you can't beat the hand lettering. The cars just get a personality from it.
Awesome video, Dawn !! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, Don! Dan knocked it out of the park! Really have to see this car in person in daylight. Killer!
Drag Strip Riot Hope that you get videos of it racing this summer !
FullThrottleDon For sure! Steve has to work it in around his AA/GS schedule. Busy dude! LOL
Oh, Wow!! Very much appreciated.
Thank you!
Amazing skill and talent. I wish someone local to me could do this sort of quality work.

old school is the best , no sign banners static cling graphics or magnetic lettering like fedex nascars and drag cars . sad hand letter is becoming a lost art because back then drag racing cars were nice enuff to be in car shows .
WAY, WAY, WAY COOL!!!
What a beautiful job you did for Steve....did you do the lettering and the BLEW BY YOU on Steve,s crooks 56 chevy?
+stuart sullenbarger Thank you, and I will pass along your note to Dan. No, he did not letter Blew By You. Thank was done by a sign painter in Cleveland.
I was surprised to see him using an old VL Paasche instead of a gravity feed of some kind.

very hot! nice job!
How do you charge for a job like that?
Music name?
best
What a hateful din! What a shame would rather watch it in silence or at least a decent 70s tune!
Pure art ,hate the music.
I was all for this video until the music Came on. Future RUclipsrs, music will either make or break your video no matter the content.
Fascinating since I am an artist and paint and build models. That techno crap has gotta go though. You need something with guitar friend.
Rock on, Robert!
Because sound bed
