HISTORY OF SUMATHI AWARDS
The “Sumathi Awards” also known as the "පුංචි තිරයේ මහා කලා මංගල්‍ය" Is the first and longest uninterrupted television festival in Sri Lanka.
Held since 1995, “Sumathi Awards” has become one of the most influential and prestigious television festival in Sri Lanka recognizing the creativity, talent, innovation and entertainment.
The festival is also home to the Annual Life Time achievement “U W S Sumathipala” awards. This award is handed out to outstanding performance in various fields of art and only given once in a life time.
In 1995 the television festival opened with entrees from 4 major Television Channels and over 40 awards were given including the life time achievement award and the most sought out “Most Popular Awards” with public voting through coupons in Lakbima Newspaper.
In its history of a quarter century, the “Sumathi Awards” have become synonymous with excellence in the Sri Lankan Television industry, and are an anticipated and coveted award for its recognition of creativity, innovation and craft.
