  • Hi Everyone! It is definitely important to research any new type of plant that you plan on growing for the first time. Today we talk about one that I had no idea was VERY dangerous to grow.

For sure!! Anyone they know that gardens needs to be aware! It's not something that's easily found when you do a quick look up for Jicama. I had to actually look up with "Are Jicama plants poisonous" And then the top answer was YES but just a quick look at jicama didn't show anything about this fact right off!!

That's is good information to know. The leaves of the rhubarb are also toxic, but the stems are quite edible. Always learn your plants. 💖💖💖

Hi Stephanie you’ve been very busy in the garden. The new seedlings 🌱 are doing so well. You must love your new greenhouse to be able to do everything in. Can’t wait to see you veggie garden this year. Lovely to see a batch of eggs especially when yours took so long to lay now giving you lots of yummy eggs. Cannot beat a home fresh egg. Thanks for sharing see you later for the live. Take care and God bless 💕🙏🧑‍🌾

The Jelly on the seeds are what some seeds do before sprouting. put a little dirt over them not much just a little. The gel holds water for them to germinate.

I learned a lot from you today Steph! Are you going to use the same method for the zucchini squash bugs? As a child I lived on 28 acres and I tasted every single plant on the farm and I know that some of them were poisonous now I always wondered why I did that I knew that plants could kill even then but I just tasted them and if I knew it was a good plant I would eat it and show my friends and cousins I had grand adventures in the trees and I am so very grateful for my time there.😊🧡💜🧡

Do you grow rhubarb. I know the leaves can make you sick, but the stem is great in sauces and pies. It comes up every year.

Steph, I agree with you completely. Some plants may work well for some people, and not so much for others. Everyone is at different stages and places in life. Also, everyone doesn’t have the same taste. For example; rhubarb, I happen to love it while many people don’t. Also consider that the leaves are toxic, while the stems are edible. There are lots of plants that may work well for some, but not others. I think that your example was great and should be wonderful food for thought. Y’all have a blessed day!

I was going to say there are a lot of common garden plants that people grow all of the time that we can only eat one part of and the rest is poison. Such as potatoes, tomatoes and peppers all being part of a family of plants called deadly night shades. However I can see the issue with the jicama especially if it has bean pods that could be mistaken for other beans, by kids or animals.

Tomatoes and potatoes are nightshades and both the plants are toxic except for the specific part that gets eaten. Usually the problematic parts are also foul tasting to discourage herbivores. Cassava and pokeweed are both toxic until properly prepared. Just pointing that out - you should definitely grow what you’re comfortable with. Good luck with the garden.
