    Thanks for this video! I was given one of these and it has what looks like fungus on the inside face of the front lens. I was quote £200-£300 to clean it in a repair shop, and now I can do it myself. Thanks you! 🫡

    Thanks for the video - it gave me courage to do the same repair.
    But I found out that the three "screws" that sit on the side by the springs are not screws at all. They have no thread and have an eccentric that adjusts the alignment of the lens. That's why it's all glued together. The screw heads have a small dot that shows the position of the eccentric and you should definitely remember this position. it is best if you mark exactly how the lens was sitting on the ring and also the corresponding position of the eccentric markings.

    Thanks, that worked. Although I thought I might hit a snag when the 4 silver screws were glued in as well. I chipped that out and it came loose. And I got the piece of grassy looking stuff off the back of the front element you showed us how to remove. Success

      I also had the screws glued on at first but I removed it when I originally took apart the lens, I guess I forgot about the glue by the time I made the video. I'm glad you were able to get past that and were able to clean your lens.

    Thanks for your video. I opened mine and clean my front glass, but fungus has got inside the front element glass. Then I opened and cleaned but I damaged the glass because this front element is not mean to be opened, its sealed. Anyway don't affected the image. When I find this glass I will buy one to replace.

    I got bad news for you on this lens. The reason there are springs and the lens front element has loctite on it, is because it’s been aligned at the factory for proper centering and corner resolution. You will find the installing a new front element (or this element) without alignment will result in a lens with very poor corner sharpness.
    The alignment is done using a lens projector and the Sony lens adjustment box to be able to lock the image stabilizer and hold focus to the correct alignment position. I usually don’t repair these lenses any longer since the cost of parts and repair time exceed the cost of an excellent condition used lens ~$150. The cost of the front element from Sony on this lens is around $110 plus shipping

      Couldn't get much worse than the 3 I've had over the years. Every single one exhibited signs of extreme decentring at telephoto end. my newest one is sharp in the upper half of the frame and soft in the lower half.

    Hi George, my lens has fungus inside the lens you cleaned, between the two glasses, can it be removed?. It seems sealed.

    • @KoshyGeorge
      @KoshyGeorge  4 года назад +3

      I specifically mentioned that in the video. The two lens are fixed together.
      I think your best bet would be to either maybe buy a second hand non functional lens or just that part of ebay or Craigslist or something similar on the cheap and swap the part or get it repaired by a professional.
      Edit:
      Also the fungus in there might not decease the image quality a whole lot since it is a long focal length lens. If you keep the lens in a low humidity environment in the future that can stop the future spread of the fungus. Invest in a dry box if you have lot of lenses/bodies or get a airtight container and a hygrometer and some silica packets, be sure to monitor the hygrometer to make sure it doesn't get too dry, which can cause the lubricants in the lens to dry out. I think Sony advises to store lenses between 40 and 50 % relative humidity, check manufacturer's website to make sure.

      Hi George, you are right, nothing to do. Repair it may not worth the cost. Thinking in a new lens. Many thanks

    • @BOREDANDWELLBORED
      @BOREDANDWELLBORED 4 года назад

      @@KoshyGeorge since there's a tiny hole between those attached lens, do you think it's a good idea to dip the entire thing inside a contact lens cleaner solution then suck it out? There has to be a way to clean the fungus instead of throwing away a perfectly functional lens

    • @KoshyGeorge
      @KoshyGeorge  4 года назад

      @@BOREDANDWELLBORED Since it's such a tiny hole I'd imagine you'd have a hard time getting the cleaning solution in and out of the attached lenses. You maybe able to dry it out by leaving it under the sun. But since you won't be able to wipe the lens with a cleaning cloth their might some residue left behind after the liquid dries.
      You have to ask yourself is it worth taking that risk. Is your picture quality that effected by the current fungal growth.
      From what I understand leaving the lens in the sun will kill the fungus. The current fungal patterns will still remain but the growth will stop as long as you store your lens at low humidity. Ideally between 40 and 50% relative humidity according to Sony.
      If you go ahead with your plan to immerse the lens in cleaner solution please let me know of the results.

      @@KoshyGeorge I'm still thinking if it's worth it. Planning to give this lens away and buy another good as new one because this lens with Sony 1.7x teleconverter is my favorite now but what if the new one would also have fungus issue in few months? At this moment I'm planning to proceed with the peroxide dipping then maybe dried on sunlight. Just watched your video minutes ago so my decision is not final but I'll let u know if I did
