  • This is one of my learners practicing his live and dead tests as part of a training aid for his classmates. The video will be used to provoke class discussions on best practice. Please remember this learner is working towards his qualification and is not currently registered as a Part P domestic installer. The installation with be tested again by his QS and notified through the correct channels.
    In this video we change a consumer unit sometimes called a fuse box and carry out live and dead testing.
    Videos are training aids for City and Guilds (C and G) and EAL courses Level 1, 2, 3 plus AM2, AM2S and AM2E.

      Hi. We try hard at my college but we are not always right. Remember this video is not totally perfect but will raise talking points for his fellow classmates as we look to put into practice our training.     Silly question. When the CPC continuity was done on the cooker circuit, he then went to test polarity by operating the isolator. Isn't that a double pole isolator? Therefore even if the polarity was incorrect and the line was actually the neutral, there would've been a break in continuity by operating the isolator.

    I am with the you on this , as their was never ‘this much testing in my day and having just bought some new equipment and before my 18th I’m glad it’s something to rack the brains 20 years on .
    However their is a but and mine is theirs no way electricians allow the time to do all that testing when doing a board change as simply the clients do not pay for that time . So not Many are going to do all this .
    Most folk go down the RCBO route and eradicate the RCD Problems.
    Never the less great video and gave me some good pointers . Thank you 👍

      I’m thinking of making a fica type wall in my garage with a some different circuits just to get a grip on all the testing . After work go out with a cuppa and mess about with the tester and do the tests over and over again to get in the habit and getting to grips with them all .
      What’s your thoughts on this for an idea just out if interest ?

    Great video. Will be using this as a reference video as I’ve been stuck on new installs who had their own dedicated testers and just started with a company who’s main customer is the local councils so lots of testing, remedial work and rewires. What’s everyone’s views on the cooker DP isolator being above the cooker itself? I suppose it’s the RCD protection cop out but I would’ve moved it to somewhere more appropriate . Nonetheless GSH are my go to learning source just to refresh - keep up the great work guys 👍🏻

    7 mins into video. r1 = 0.15, rn = 0.15 . if 2.5/1.5 (T & E) r2 of 0.45 is bly high? I would expect 0.25

      That how I worked it out too r1 = 0.15. r2=1.67× r1
      0.15 × 1.67=0.25

    Is there a video demonstrating how to carry out an I.R test on a circuit that has an RCBO? Is it a case of disconnecting all conductors before carrying out the test in exam conditions?

    The r2 reading on the ring was high, much more than 1.67 x 0.15. It might be old 2.5 + 1 mm2 t+e cable but it would still be a bit high. I think there is a slightly loose cpc somewhere.

    When testing ir and continuity if you were to find faults what needed to be addressed but the client wasnt happy with paying the extra money what would be the outcome. Just put the old consumer unit back up?? Or just fit the new consumer unit and state all issues on the certificate that need addressing even if they could be dangerous. maybe do a quick blanket ir before giving the client a quote? Great vid by the way.

      Hi. My learner did pre tests before starting work. With the old consumer unit in place he did continuity, insulation resistance, Ze and a full visual inspection. He found a fault on the ring circuit during these tests. At this stage the old consumer unit is still in place. Pre tests are very important for the reason in your question thanks for your great question GSH Electrical

      What was the reason for the change of CU ? This looks like another CU change for no real reason? Even if there was no RCDs , it was installed to an earlier edition of BS7671 that doesn’t mean it should be replaced or upgraded . HSE note published in BS7671 was and is clear on that. When he found a continuity problem he should have coded it, not fix it and use it as an excuse to replace the CU . No one takes any notice of the regs or the HSE note . Did all the test results comply with BS7671 yes they did so why change the CU he should / could have signed it off as safe for continued service.

    Great video nice to see the real world testing, nice to see that your doing pre tests and not just a straight swap. Also in regards to reconnecting the main earth to the service cut out what was the reason for it being disconnected, did you up the size?? Also I thought that the DNO would have had to connect that in ?? Thanks keep the vids coming

      Hi. He upgraded the tail and earthing conductor added a 100 switch. REC will re-seal the cutout (at a cost).

    When insulation resistance is performed on the lighting circuit, to change strappers you must switch one switch at the time otherwise switch will be in on or off position . Worst case when switch is left in off position ,than switched line conductor will be missed.Also there is no reason to do insulation resistance test twice between cpc and neutral as they permanently connected.

    Who keeps a record of all the test results carried out for the CU installation. Are/should they held by they likes of NAPIT Elecsa or NICEIC. If they aren't - then they should be.

    Very good video performed by a very diligent student. Cabling seems to enter the board through the rear knockouts how was the fire integrity preserved? Do you think that it is ok to use an intumenscent fire sealent where the cables use an existing hole that may not meet current fire barrier standards?

      So best working practice to use a 40amp? Don’t get me wrong for bigger showers I will use 10mm and 40amp. But I have always been told throughout my apprenticeship if you come across a 6mm on a 40amp to reduce the rating to 32.

      Hi. Another one of the talking points brought up in this video to discussed in the classroom. As the circuit(s) are protected by and RCD the earth faults will be cleared by this device so no issues you are now required to do a loop test between line and neutral and check that reading again the maximum Zs of the breaker... my class won’t need the lesson that goes with this if you keep going.     To the usual high standards. Your videos have been a great help. Just passed my 2392-10. Found on several occasions r1+r2 over 4 did not match the socket values as cpc was greater than 1.67 times. How do we deal with this on site?

      Hi. The Quality of copper and it’s resistivity unfortunately changes. Go with the readings you calculate from r1, rn and r2 to find R1 + Rn and R1 + R2 + - 0.05 ohms. All the best GSH Electrical

    As depressing as this sounds, I can almost garrantee very few sparks would carry out all the thorough pre testing required and thorough post testing for a cu change. Been doing it 40 years and never seen any other sparks carry out all the required testing.

      Good luck with that, once they are on there own in the real world doing it in an occupied property with crap everywhere some of those tests will be swerved. I’d like to be more positive about it sorry.

      If they don’t bother with IR testing before a board change.......they soon will after finishing one at 530pm and then realise they have a few earth faults to trace before the RCDs stay in 😂. Been to a few where the RCDs aren’t even connected 😡😡
      Great to see the learners are getting it drummed in, which no doubt become second nature.

      Chris, I do hope so. Would have liked to see this vid using a more common scenario of a occupied house with multi dimmers,countless down lights, external power and lighting,shed,loft circuits with crap everywhere etc. Instead of cherry picking a nice empty house with pendants etc.

    Maybe I'm being stupid here, but why retest (insulation resistance) between the neutral and cpc conductor on the two way lighting circuit, both are unswitched so pressing the 2 way switches should have no bearing with regards to your insulation resistance reading between neutral and cpc.

    If you T&E is 2.5mm, r1 is 0.15, rn is 0.15, the expected value of r2 should be 0.25 and not 0.45 as its only 1.67 times thinner. 1.67x0.15 is 0.25 not 0.45 except you have extra lenght for the cpc.

    Am I missing something here? When he carried out an insulation test between Neutral and CPC he got an infinity reading , yet we saw him connecting the earthing conductor previously into the MET supply cut out. How did he get the infinity reading. Surely the earthing lead should have been disconnected from the supply neutral.
    Or did I miss something here??
    Otherwise a well done video.

    Im afraid 0.45 ohms is way to high for r2. It should be 0.25 ohms if r1 is 0.15 ohms.

    Hi Gaz and Marcus. A quick question please. If you're testing a circuit (eg. Lighting circuit) that has being installed by somebody else years ago, how do you work out where the furthest lighting point is? And then do you record the reading from the furthest point in the continuity test as your value for the test sheet?

      You’ve answered your own question pretty much, the furthest point of the radial circuit will give you the highest R1+R2 reading (lighting, radial sockets etc) as it has the most cable in the run and therefore the highest resistance which is the value you record.
      The way you find it is to test at every point of the circuit (all switch points, all PIR’s (if applicable) all lighting points I.e. ceiling rose and the highest continuity value is your end point

    On here you did 1 pfc test on the breaker but should all of them of been tested?

      Hi. You could calculate Fault current by doing voltage/Ze Guide)... you can argue that doing the test on the top of the main switch is always going to be the highest fault current so why bother doing down stream on a breaker where the fault current will be less.     Interesting you say fuse has been pulled... did you ask the dno permission or just do it? strictly speaking its the dno's property most will say not to pull, more to cover themselves and down to h&S. however in the real world we all know people pull them or have a visit from the seal fairy! each person must make a risk assessment and decide, if its one of the really old ones do not touch as it will possibly fall apart and may contain asbestos. with newer ones make sure there is no load and for extra protection wear the electrical safety gloves and visor like when changing a meter..
    What do you teach your students about this issue?

      That particual torque screwdriver, when working in a board, I like to check the incoming tails are tighten to the correct torque at the main switch. I understand the terminations were made with the supply isolated but I'm not a big fan of uninsulated hand tools for electricians.

    Why did you use 6mm for the shower circuit, it's not going to be suitable, the cable's going to overheat. Should have used 10mm.
    Spend a bit more money and install the correct cable. What's the power rating of the shower? When the householder finds the shower is not heating the water enough and wants to upgrade the shower, will you come back and install the 10mm cable free of charge?

    Question? Whats the difference between polarity & functionality test. The young man switched the switch and said polarity confirmed but i thought that was a functional test to see that the switch is working.
