I just want to make a correction. "AnandTech and IOSnoops report the dual-core ARM chip is dynamically clocked around 900MHz, likely in search of reduced power consumption" From engadget's post. (It's actually slightly lower than 900MHz)
Am a first time iPad owner and went straight for the iPad 2... Initially bought it as a material want, but have realised its full potential and have ditched the laptop for when I'm away from the office. All I need to do now is upgrade my 3GS to the 4S and I'll have the set!!
I like this video btw, Techno Buffalo does great! They both look great and specs sounds nice for the iPad2 along with the camera's and extra core. I think it is worth it, but to some extent it is
have you tried the speed test on different Wifi connections or when the iPads are further apart? I think the newer iPad Wifi might be stronger and therefore destroying the network connection for the old iPad. I've seen this with different laptops on the same Wifi. Perhaps thats the reason? Perhaps turn of the other and benchmark by a clock to see if its really that slow or not.
@LaithBSoul No... that is incorrect, the processor has two cores, each running at 1 GHZ, that does not mean that the overall processor runs at 2 GHZ or than it is twice as fast as a single core processor running at 1 GHZ.
i think the big deal with upgrading are the cameras and everything you can do with them, so of course if you dont have any interest in that, no upgrade neccessary but some people might find the cameras to be a deal breaker
I Think the few better (but not minor) things which are better on the iPad 2 are: 1) It's thinner 2) It has front facing camera (the rear camera is ridiculous) 3) Little bit faster 4) Smart covers. That, in my opinion, are great things, but I'm going right now for the 1st gen 64GB 3G.
at 9:50 - 9:54 you said " i don't see much of a compelling reason to upgrade from the iPad 2 to the iPad 1" think you should put a caption there to clarify to some of the viewers ! also i prefer white so i got the iPad 2, also wanted to know is the side a rectangular shape for both iPad 1 and iPad 2 ? because my iPad 2 is a round edged, and i never seen an iPad 1 in real life but when i search up iPad 2 on google they show thats its rectangular at the side and also looks like that in the vid.
Just wanted to make you aware of your error in closing the background apps first before clearing your cache. When you closed your apps and then opened the settings app you therefore have the settings app open and running in the background on both ipads. You should have cleared the cache first and then closed all apps before the test :)
you have helped me a great deal. I was going to buy an ipad 2 but I didnt see a significant difference between the two. I am purchasing an ipad one. THank you so much for making my decision easier.:)
is your I-pad 1 and I-pad 2 are both new ? sometimes i feel like I-pad will slow down for some reason after you brought it for awhile. even you clean up everything.
@XGT59 I agree with you. It's pointless for people who already have the first iPad to get the 2nd one. They are almost the same exact thing, one just has a camera, faster performance, and is a little thinner. Not much new stuff to have to upgrade.
I was considering getting an ipad 1 but I've decided to go with the ipad 2 because when later versions of software come out (maybe even iOS 6 or 7) Some or all of the features might not be compatible with the 1st gen iPad.
@LaithBSoul No, you said that a dual core processor runs each core at half the "total speed." In other words a 1 GHZ dual core processor is two cores at 500 MHZ. That's wrong, a 1 GHZ dual core processor is two cores running at 1 GHZ.
Good video! Does ipad2 play RUclips smother than ipad1? Some times my 1 can take up to 5mins to load 35 seconds of video. It starts, stops, loads, plays 6 seconds, starts stops ...etc!
while watching this video on my pc i tried to load the technobuffalo website on my first gen ipad and it loaded as fast as your ipad 2 so i guess it depends on the quality of the wireless network
I have the original, thinking about upgrading. I do love the ipad for it's supreme portablility and versatility, however if I had to choose only one between either a laptop/netbook or an iPad I would go laptop/netbook hands down. I view my iPad as an accessory to my laptop as the laptop is far more powerful! I am just trying to decide if the upgrade is worth it.
Technobuffalo loaded as fast as ipad 2 on my ipad with iOS5 and I had 7 running applications and and 8 tabs open on safari. Network speed is 20Mbps downstream.
@desjaraah you forget that the US price is WITHOUT VAT (taxes) The european prices have them incuded (in Holland it's 19%). However there are certain states that don't have taxes...
Thanks for that review. I am going to get my first I pad as a Christmas present to my son. He is only 7 though so for the games he'll be playing I think I'm just going opt for for the original.
Zeedew Eleana Vrettou yes seriously and your points are? It's like some old guy saying to you. 'Watching TV as a kid?? In my day I used to push my train set along the floor and that was it!'. Don't worry my kid is 8 now and still plays with lego and had my sheets out just yesterday building dens. He's a normal modern kid. You are both just getting old is all.
Aside from whatever you got, either the iPad 1 or 2, you still need a fully capable notebook or desktop to do your main job, school, and pleasure(adding music, photo onto the device) tasks. Save your money.
I need help. Thinking about getting an Ipad. The have 1st gen ones really cheap on ebay. Debating on just buying the original over the 2nd gen. Opinions please.
@xvaita I recommend you wait one more year until the tablet market matures more. I have an ipad 2 and it's still just a big ipod touch. If you want to have more customization, In a few months, there will be much better android honeycomb tablets like the galaxy tab 8.9 and 10.1
i have the i pod touch and i saved my money for i dont know! haha but anyways would you consider me buying this is it any good or not the i pad 2 i wanted one with a comera so i choose this one i dont really want the i pad3 but i want one would you recomend this
The iPad 1 actually looks like the screen is brighter but since you said they were both set at the same brightness settings, I guess it was just the light. :)
@MyLifeAsJr yes, can you name any other significant difference? the software is the same, so that cant be tested, the only major difference is the extra speed and facetime cameras, wich he posted a video for in the description bar. i think john's reviews are very useful and very good.
This video was kind of revealing. With double the RAM and CPU power, one would think the iPad 2 would completely blow away the original iPad in speed...but it doesn't. They're both almost equal. So it seems the original iPad already had perfect specs for the OS -- the upgrade is meant more for games/apps and the few extra features.
Can any of you guys give me some advice. For college(going to another town),my needs are web browsing, facebook, youtube and skype. Not games.Occasionally some movie or something.Would iPad fit my needs,or should i go for a laptop ?
I have both iPads and when the 1st one came out it was great! But then I got the 2nd one it was kind of the same but better in my opinion, and now I had the air 2 and now the pro!
You haven't mentioned anything about the ipad 2 having 2 cameras, this is a big difference between them especially for us that want one in order to use skype!
ok i've had the ipad since the day it came out and i just learned something i didn't know lol i didn't know you could hold down the home button and slide to the right to get to your brightness and ipod controls, funny that i learned this just as i ordered the ipad mini and will be giving the original away
ipad 2 32gb or ipad 1 32gb and 3g(same price). Plus, apple says its going to take 1month 10 days to get the ipad 2. Is it really going to take that long? I can order ipad 1 from amazon germany and will take a week. What should I go for?
I am new to the ipad never been around them till one of our friends brought theirs over, man, I guess I was in the woods to long, had no idea what I was missing, kept doing research and shopping prices then one day I was at a retail store and they had the ipad2 $70.00 off I knew the ipad 3 was coming out in two months but thought it was a good deal so I jumped on it, down the road, or when I ware this one out will get the 3 or 4 or 5 what ever apple has at that time, thanks for the comparison
the fact that the iPad 2 can work on 3g networks makes more difference than you would think facetime on the iPad is definitely going to be better than on the iPhone or iPod and though both iPads have same battery life and same display i'd have to say the iPad 2 has more potential for when you're going on a trip or something :P
I'm getting the iPad 2 mainly because I have the iPhone 3G, and it's getting really slow and sluggish. It's at least 3 or 4 years old, and the iPad I think would be a great upgrade for me. Plus it just looks cool and freaking awesome. I wonder how well my iPhone would take Infinity Blade. Lol
Thanks, great review! I decided to go with the first generation, ATT is selling the 64 gig wifi+3g for $530. Perhaps a savings of $100 would not have moved me to purchase the first generation model, bur certainly a savings of $300 did.
Waiting for iPad 4 with (hopefully) quad core processor, hd FaceTime camera, better battery, stereo speakers, 8 mp rear camera, retina display, etc......:-) I have an iPad 1 which is working just fine.....
The iPad 2 supports up to iOS 9 while the iPad 1 only supports iOS 5 despite being only one year older
Harry Truong very weird though
Because iPad 1st gen only has 256MB of RAM, which is smaller than iPhone 4
@@Kylo_Ren_2033 and iPad 2 has A5
Tanks for the Vid. It is a great help for me. Good work!
I still use my I pad 2 daily, still in Perfect condition and isn't slow at all
Techno buffalo has come such a long way since its humble beginnings..... Great job Jon!
The iPad 1 is not able to upgrade to iOS 8. So I think the iPad 2 is the way to go.
L. Tippuh I use my iPad 2 in iOS 6.3.3
How do you buy all of these expensive technoligy?
Watching on iPad 17.
Same
Like if your watching in 2036
I am watching on ipad 18, its kinda obsolete now ;(
I just want to make a correction.
"AnandTech and IOSnoops report the dual-core ARM chip is dynamically clocked around 900MHz, likely in search of reduced power consumption"
From engadget's post.
(It's actually slightly lower than 900MHz)
Great review!
But could you also test the google earth app on the new Ipad 2, please?
Am a first time iPad owner and went straight for the iPad 2... Initially bought it as a material want, but have realised its full potential and have ditched the laptop for when I'm away from the office. All I need to do now is upgrade my 3GS to the 4S and I'll have the set!!
cool review :)just wondering do you get to keep the stuff you review?
I like this video btw, Techno Buffalo does great!
They both look great and specs sounds nice for the iPad2 along with the camera's and extra core. I think it is worth it, but to some extent it is
did you turn the brightness on ipad 2darker or is it just darker and btw GREAT VID XD
have you tried the speed test on different Wifi connections or when the iPads are further apart? I think the newer iPad Wifi might be stronger and therefore destroying the network connection for the old iPad. I've seen this with different laptops on the same Wifi. Perhaps thats the reason? Perhaps turn of the other and benchmark by a clock to see if its really that slow or not.
So, can you change the background n the iPad 1? (thanks this was great!)
You should do this comparison again or even better do a comparison between the newest iPad and the iPad 1.
@LaithBSoul No... that is incorrect, the processor has two cores, each running at 1 GHZ, that does not mean that the overall processor runs at 2 GHZ or than it is twice as fast as a single core processor running at 1 GHZ.
thanks dude i was debating on which one to get and i will get the first gen wi fi from my birthday money you were very helpful and swayed my decision
I'm thinking of getting iPad2 vs iPad3. Seems like the new one is just a better resolution but it doesn't really seem to be a big deal.
How do u have that search bar on safari when u went from technobuffalo to RUclips...
i think the big deal with upgrading are the cameras and everything you can do with them, so of course if you dont have any interest in that, no upgrade neccessary but some people might find the cameras to be a deal breaker
You make some good videos. Keep doing them.
Great video Jon. The iPad is absolutely amazing
WOW! After 4-5 seconds you can now skip the ad at the beginning of almost every RUclips video :O
Just wanted to make you aware of your error in closing the background apps first before clearing your cache. When you closed your apps and then opened the settings app you therefore have the settings app open and running in the background on both ipads. you have helped me a great deal. I was going to buy an ipad 2 but I didnt see a significant difference between the two. I am purchasing an ipad one. THank you so much for making my decision easier.:)
John just to let you know apple has put a new kind of coating on the screen to make the colors more vivid and less washed out
is your I-pad 1 and I-pad 2 are both new ?
sometimes i feel like I-pad will slow down for some reason after you brought it for awhile. even you clean up everything.
@XGT59 I agree with you. It's pointless for people who already have the first iPad to get the 2nd one. They are almost the same exact thing, one just has a camera, faster performance, and is a little thinner. Not much new stuff to have to upgrade.
Extremely helpful thanks!
Watching it on my awesome iPad 2...... Expected to get the new iPad 5 in October 2013.........have iPhone 5s lol
I was considering getting an ipad 1 but I've decided to go with the ipad 2 because when later versions of software come out (maybe even iOS 6 or 7) Some or all of the features might not be compatible with the 1st gen iPad.

I haven't seen the hole video here but the iPad 2 and the first iPad has the same size of the screen right?:)
great review, aggree very much with you pal.
i was going to buy the ipad2 but after this review i'll stick with his older brother.
Good video! Does ipad2 play RUclips smother than ipad1? Some times my 1 can take up to 5mins to load 35 seconds of video. It starts, stops, loads, plays 6 seconds, starts stops ...etc!
lol why did you put 'Jon Rettinger' twice in the tags?
while watching this video on my pc i tried to load the technobuffalo website on my first gen ipad and it loaded as fast as your ipad 2 so i guess it depends on the quality of the wireless network
Great review!! Thanks for that, it helped me alot.
I have never seen an iPad 1 load safari that slow. It's pretty much the same as the second one, especially after the 4.3 update.
I have the original, thinking about upgrading. I do love the ipad for it's supreme portablility and versatility, however if I had to choose only one between either a laptop/netbook or an iPad I would go laptop/netbook hands down. Hey when u gonna start the review ?!
i love techno buffalo vids i watch them all the time...i neverthought i would ever luv electronics as much as i do!!!!
Sheldon like eye twitching began when he put the ipad 2 down at an odd angle.
Stop being a cheap as moron. The original is not even sold new anymore.
SRLY????? an ipad for a 7 yr old?!?! when i was 7 i played with legos and pokemon......
Zeedew Yeah! I had my first tablet when I was 13 years old. When I was 7 i was playing with my dolls and my teddy bear. :P
Zeedew Eleana Vrettou yes seriously and your points are?
It's like some old guy saying to you. 'Watching TV as a kid?? In my day I used to push my train set along the floor and that was it!'.

You are both just getting old is all.
Me? Old? Hahaha I'm 16!
If you have a Ipod Touch 4G. Would you recommend upgrading to an IPad? Are they the same? Which Ones better?
Does the iPad 2 get slow if i put many applications on it like you? I will be getting the 32GB WiFi model.
Dude, at 9:53 you said you wouldn't want to upgrade from the iPad 2 to the iPad1!!!!!!! LOLOLOLOLHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! You rock though still lol
Nice review!
Aside from whatever you got, either the iPad 1 or 2, you still need a fully capable notebook or desktop to do your main job, school, and pleasure(adding music, photo onto the device) tasks. Save your money.

9:50 - 9:55 Did you say, "upgrade from the Ipad 2 to Ipad 1? haha
What about the HMDI and other cable add ons the Ipad2 offers do thy work with the Ipad?
it's great)))))what do you think can i find original i pad in Turkey?
@xvaita I recommend you wait one more year until the tablet market matures more. I have an ipad 2 and it's still just a big ipod touch. If you want to have more customization, In a few months, there will be much better android honeycomb tablets like the galaxy tab 8.9 and 10.1
Good video mate
OMG Thank you so much for making this video because my sister and I don't know wich one to get.
Are both running iOS 4.3?
i have the i pod touch and i saved my money for i dont know! haha but anyways would you consider me buying this is it any good or not the i pad 2 i wanted one with a comera so i choose this one i dont really want the i pad3 but i want one would you recomend this

is this ipad 2 something that can come in handy for my classes?
i tried the same page cued with your timing and my ipad was able to load the page as fast as ipad 2

@hardcoreLazors nope by estonians and finland bought that game to them, estonians are creators of that game
I have both iPads and when the 1st one came out it was great! But then I got the 2nd one it was kind of the same but better in my opinion, and now I had the air 2 and now the pro!

@MattDQC you can pre- order it now though
Is the screen resolution better on the 2
Wtf when i ran ur website it loaded just as fast as the ipad 2 did in this vid

Haha you said it's not worth upgrading from the iPad 2 to the iPad 1. BTW nice video.
how much is the iPad 1st gen? And where can i buy it?
I only want to know one thing. Will it blend?
Thanks, great review! I decided to go with the first generation, ATT is selling the 64 gig wifi+3g for $530. Perhaps a savings of $100 would not have moved me to purchase the first generation model, bur certainly a savings of $300 did.
does the ipad2 have the blue-ish haze when you tilt it?
Waiting for iPad 4 with (hopefully) quad core processor, hd FaceTime camera, better battery, stereo speakers, 8 mp rear camera, retina display, etc......:-) I have an iPad 1 which is working just fine.....
@aAndeErson awesome buddy! I finally got my iPad 2 For Free too. The sound quality seems awesome and works amazing!
