I'll put on a playthrough of this game and let it play while I'm working. Great music, classic Genesis sounds, and a great time warp. Strider is one of the best on the Genesis.
I remember first seeing this on demo in a shop when I was about 8 years old. My brother and I loved video games and were blown away by the graphics. We eventually convinced our parents to buy it but damn it was expensive at $100. Much nostalgia. Seeing it now it's actually a pretty weird game - very short, with an anaemic storyline and borderline nonsensical text. We didn't have too much trouble finishing it. Even the gameplay mechanics are strange, compared to most other 2D platformers of the time. The graphics are still damn impressive.
This game was outstanding for it's time. My favorite game when it came out. Genesis version was a very close reproduction of the arcade classic. Check out Osman if you love Strider, it's from the same director.
Such a unique game. I spent hours on the Genesis Strider back in the day. I was a big fan of the NES Strider too. Really cool character, concept, and setting.
@NeverendingTwilight1 i'm 18 and I think EXACTLY like you! Gameplay is the most important aspect of a game! That's why I still play pac-man and original Sonic as I do play God of War III and such. Nowadays a large portion only care about graphics. If they're "bad", they don't even try it! I love games FOR WHAT THEY ARE!
Somehow this game is on my TOP 20 favorite games since the days of ATARI 2600 ( to present xone, ps4, Wii U) I still like to play the game often, and that is why I still can beat the game with Little effort. I even like it better tan the arcade game.
The first wave of Genesis title had a lot of repetitive games. Strider was one of the titles that made gamers notice the Genesis. One cool thing about Genesis games is that they came in sturdy plastic cases so it's fairly easy to find games in great shape complete with manual.
Another great side-scroller type game for the Genesis that I recently discovered is called Ranger X. I never beat Strider, it's pretty freaking hard later on.
I didn't get this game, or play it, until about 6 months ago. I had played the crappy NES version a couple times, but even then, not until a few years ago. I've used him in Marvel vs. Capcom 2, but that was it for a long time. I finally found a copy at a local old game place for like $2, so I picked it up.
So this is where Strider-Hiryu came from. The first time I was introduce to the character was in "Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes" and "Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes", both released in the arcades and on Sega Dreamcast.
Strider was just one of those "must own" titles back in the day. It was one of the first "good" 3rd party platformers on the genesis that was up there with revenge of the shinobi. There was also a NES version of Strider, but it was a completely different type of game, (more like a castlevania clone) with no connection to the arcade unit.
seein this again has made me realize where my love for ninjas began. for those who havent seen it, watch a film called ninja assassin that came out last year, from the makers of the matrix
Mark, you should definitely get your hands on Strider 2 for the PS1! Not only it is an awesome game with 2d sprites and 3d backgrounds, but it also includes the original arcade version of Strider 1!
fantastic game, super expensive too back in the day, i think it was 70 bucks for this cart! my friends and i used to use the sound sample option to make prank phone calls lol
@gumbyx84 There was a sequel called Strider 2: Journey from Darkness, for the Genesis made by U.S.Gold. It was crappy, so Capcom pretends it doesn't exist. That's why the sequel on Playstation was called Strider 2.
Well if you watch his S-VIDEO MODIFIED SEGA GENESIS video. He mentioned that he bought his sega genesis when he was in the 8th grade. And my guess he was around 13 or 14 when he bought it. And that's still as a kid.
question from a genesis noob (i got one at a garage sale recently): are games like strider and shinobi 3 supposed to have saves? are are they meant to be beaten in one sitting? I am just asking to make sure that i don't have to replace any batteries.
i would like to see a 3-D remake of this game, or even have it be a new game story all together. the point is, make it have a 3-D enviroment to play around in like in newer releaces for Shinobi and Ninja Gaiden.
@solideYe11 I have respect from classic games. They played an important role in history and were an important step in video game evolution, and were very fun to play *at the time*. What I'm saying is that it's time to MOVE ON already, since compared to today's gaming standards these games are now unplayable unless you're really bored as hell. Just my opinion. And since that is the case I can't understand why you'd want to watch a "review" of a game from 15 years ago.
Finally, Strider. Mark, your reviews are always interesting. Keep them coming. Oh, and 4 people must have missed the thumbs up button, or maybe they're just idiots.
Anyone that says classic games are unplayable today need to lay off the crack and shut the hell up. Some kids these days are just spoiled with flashy HD graphics and 3D cut scenes.People should focus more on game play than how good a game looks. This game looks good Mark. If you find those drawings you should show them on ur channel for us.
@nanquan491 he reviews them because he knows that there are people who still enjoy these games and even though they dont have as nice graphics, theyre classics, these days they judge a game not cuz of its gameplay or story but because of the graphics. These games are fine pieces of video game history and theyre cheaper now so instead of spending $60 on CoD or Halo, you can spend $5 on a copy of Strider or Berzerk.
@nanquan491 There's no real answer to your question, we all have different tastes at different times, it's like asking why would i read a book instead of a watching a movie based on it, on an HD TV, i just want to, and you may not want to, simple as.
EGM's 1990 game of the year baby!!!
Strider was one of the best games available on the Genesis. Growing up, I immensely enjoyed playing this over and over.
This game looks extremely impressive, graphically, for a game that came out in 1989. Wow. And what a unique soundtrack, too.
One of the best games when i was growing up. I still have my cartridge.
Strider made my most memorable Christmas that I ruined by beating it that night lol
Been waiting for this one. Easily one of my favorite way-back games.
Thanks, Mark!
the artwork on the japanese version is amazing!

Some of the hand drawn artwork on the box covers to these games- I found amazing.
After all these years.... The intros for CGR is still awesome.
When everything is great about the game, but the cover art has a midget Uncle Joey wearing purple tights.
Man, I remember playing this game as a kid, I didn't remembered its name!
Thanks for bringing back such lovely memories :D
This game was outstanding for it's time. My favorite game when it came out. Genesis version was a very close reproduction of the arcade classic. Check out Osman if you love Strider, it's from the same director.
I played this as a kid. its so hard to beat
Putting in a humble request for a review of Vectorman for the Genesis. That game IS my childhood.
I'm so glad I own the Japanese version. The cover of the western releases is horrendous looking whereas the Japanese cover is a work of art.
A couple of bucks, aw, should have started my collection back then
One of the first games I had for the Genesis. Was awesome!
I'm 41 and this game when I was a kid was 1 of my favorites. Unexpectedly too I dont know how I came across it but I enjoyed it
Classic,I used to play that game all the time as a kid,I need to revisit it again.
Such a unique game. I spent hours on the Genesis Strider back in the day. I was a big fan of the NES Strider too. Really cool character, concept, and setting.
When I was growing up in the 90s, I played two games the most, Super Metroid, and this. Epic.

I use to play this ALL the time next to prince of persia. I love playing my genesis :) Genesis does
Man I will never ever forget the "ikabo damo"-ladies!
They need to make a Strider 3. Seriously, they do. I'd absolutely love to see an all-new Strider Hiryu in today's gaming technology.
There is also another Strider 2 that was released for the Arcade and PS1 platform that is worth playing as well, Lord Karnage.
The first wave of Genesis title had a lot of repetitive games. Strider was one of the titles that made gamers notice the Genesis.
One cool thing about Genesis games is that they came in sturdy plastic cases so it's fairly easy to find games in great shape complete with manual.

No, they don't.
That sound when you use the sword doesnt let me play this game

Played this game all the time when I was younger... Good times... :)
seein this again has made me realize where my love for ninjas began. for those who havent seen it, watch a film called ninja assassin that came out last year, from the makers of the matrix
One of the best games of all time!
@gumbyx84 My mistake, that's right. The 2 was left out entirely here in the states. Unfortunately, I sold my Playstation Strider 2 years ago.
Strider 2 was in arcades and ported to the PSX. It's an excellent game too. I would like to see you review that one.
What an awesome game. And a great arcade translation to boot.
@highwaysonyfan87 I understand the need for a fair judgement, but CGR isn't biased. He loves everything!
I loved this game, but for some reason, the game over scared the heck outta me lol
Something about the FM sound Synthesis in the Mega Drive/Genesis always freaked me out, don't know what it was! Just always sounded so eerie and cold.
I like the instant music changes in this game.
I'm getting this game for Christmas 2014.
@KingDavid73 that level at the end where you fall up to death is where I usually get stuck. I die so many times trying to make those jumps.
Id definetly want to see a remake for this but with 3d backgrounds and 2D sprites in the style of his MVC debut
best character on marvel vs capcom ever.
Came out in 1990 for genesis I believe and arcade 89. Was very impressive. The. Sf2 came out and i forgot all about it.
Thank you for the review.
Mark, you should definitely get your hands on Strider 2 for the PS1!
Not only it is an awesome game with 2d sprites and 3d backgrounds, but it also includes the original arcade version of Strider 1!
oh yeah I love your reviews good job imma fan an do u do movie reviews as well
fantastic game, super expensive too back in the day, i think it was 70 bucks for this cart! my friends and i used to use the sound sample option to make prank phone calls lol
@randomenvelope you get power ups that are robot minions that help you out but Strider is all about skill and quick timing. Strider is Awesome!
@BillyCauseyjr yeah Strider 2 for Playstation but to be technical it was 2.5 D wich is what l would love to see more in modern gaming
I'm not how many people have heard but strider is returning to current/next gens systems and is going to have a metroidvania style of progression
I loved this game when i was kid :)
@gumbyx84 There was a sequel called Strider 2: Journey from Darkness, for the Genesis made by U.S.Gold. It was crappy, so Capcom pretends it doesn't exist. That's why the sequel on Playstation was called Strider 2.

I just bought this game for 3.75$ at my local game store and am gonna play it today!
I never played this game before but the style looks awesome... I'm thinking of buying the capcom collection for the psp for this game...
question from a genesis noob (i got one at a garage sale recently): are games like strider and shinobi 3 supposed to have saves? are are they meant to be beaten in one sitting? I am just asking to make sure that i don't have to replace any batteries.
great review
awesome sketchbook may be will be worth something som day too love is universal language
@ryanc519 Yeah it was. You can buy a used copy of Strider 2 on Amazon for like $25.
Exellent megadrive game. Gonna have to rebuy this one.
Wow this was my first game with lakers vs celtics on chrismas back in 1990 too @_@...I'm getting old
i would like to see a 3-D remake of this game, or even have it be a new game story all together. the point is, make it have a 3-D enviroment to play around in like in newer releaces for Shinobi and Ninja Gaiden.
This was one of the many games that I wanted to try but did not.
I need to try and get this game.
That sketchbook would probably sell pretty well.
Lots of fun times with this one.

damn I remember playing this when I was little. The soundtrack actually made me nervous and scared when I played it lol.
Wow, I never knew the sky fortress in Sonic 2 was based so heavily on this game's one.
I loved this game.
I Loved playing this game when I was younger but I wished I owned a good working copy 4 my ps2
3:10, what are you doing in Fly Battery Zone?
i love this game... but strider 2 (as in the one officially made by capcom, and also for ps2) looks even better. :3 you should review that too mark!
i used to thrash this at bannana joes up in kaikohe
didnt even know you could get it on the mega drive
OH CRAP!!! i just finished playing this again not too long ago XD!!
Is that the same strider from Marvel vs capcom 2? I think there a charater named strider hiryu. And he looked sorta like that
Finally, Strider. Mark, your reviews are always interesting. Keep them coming. Oh, and 4 people must have missed the thumbs up button, or maybe they're just idiots.
@MTTGamerX i was born in the age of 3d and i bought an nes and play it more than my 360!
there's an official sequel released on the PS1..it was only released in Japan though...I still have the copy in like new condition
man used to love this shit , good memories
dude, i love this game.
@Skvatto dude... that IS cleveland :O i never noticed until now
the level at 2:40 reminds me of sonic 2, the level where tails drops you off on the ship
This game was/is AWESOME!

When i hear your voice i feel at home :)
Looks badass, but megaman has waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better gameplay and music. Really expect he review old megaman games.
@Neilsama SEGA developed the Sonic saga. Capcom did Strider.
3rd party relationship man.
Also... it looks more like Chemical Plant tbh.
Christ, I love the way the chicks scream when they're hit! XD
Aw man, I wish they would make another strider game.
@Hipboy125 well think about it you got the world's first home video game console that is quiet of an achievement, sir.
