The Awesome was designed to create an area of denial at range, the Stalker was designed to bring more of its firepower to bare as it advances, the Atlas was designed to be as survivable as possible with tools to remail useful across all ranges.
The King Crab was made to end problems.

The King Crab, I’ve never had to face one in battle, a fact which I am supremely thankful for. Your not wrong about it’s flaws and I’ll add that I’ve always thought assault mechs in general are a flawed concept, at some point the law of diminishing returns kicks in. You can only make a mech so heavy with so much weapons and army before the cost balloons and you begin to lose combat effectiveness. But that’s just my person opinion and I’m heavily biased by life as a periphery merc so I’ll stop there. But with all that said I’ve seen what a King Crab in its element can do and it’s awe inspiring.
Back when the Free World League Civil Wars we’re still burning hot before all this clan insanity. My Merc unit got permission from House Cantrella to jump into FWL space and take contracts with several of the factions for c-bills, salvage, and upgrades. Those were hot times and you learned real quick that you couldn’t trust anyone especially your own employer. Honestly, I’d trust some deep periphery bandit kings more than those FLW nobles and business magnates.
Anyway, we were contracted to support a unit of Marik Militia loyal to some local warlord or other in a invasion of a planet that been setting itself up as a local trade and industrial hub and had decided it didn’t like seeing its taxes going to said warlords campaigns of ‘regional stabilization’. So the decided to swear allegiance to some other warlord which our employer took personally.
Anyway, none of this is really important. Just life in the Free Worlds League and all that. So to get to the point our employers Marik Militia mechs were the ones who assaulted one of this worlds primary industrial hub cities, they wanted the glory and the salvage. We were contracted to be the clean up crew and garrison. And what we saw as we moved in is the point of all this.
During the battle for the city the enemy forces had a King Crab with a skilled pilot who’d lead the street fighting efforts. And this Mechwarrior had left broken and destroyed mechs littered through the streets of the city. It was totally in its own environment and was able to use its strengths to their maximum while minimizing ammunition use. In the end the Marik Militia managed to force it out into one of the cities green belts and hammer it until it stopped moving but I’ll never forget the sight of it.
That Mechwarrior and their King Crab had slaughtered seven mechs mostly medium and heavy class. They’d damaged another dozen mechs and they’d stalled the Militia for hours. And in the end the King Crabs corpse still stood there in the middle of this bombed out park, it’s engine had been destroyed when it’s ammo finally brewed up and killed the pilot. But the armour had contained the explosion so the mech didn’t blow up completely. It was a smoking blackened corpse of a machine but it still on its own two feet looming over broken and destroyed enemy mechs.
And all I could think of was stories from my childhood of a warrior who fought alone holding off many enemies to defend a banner. Only to eventually die standing up still clutching the banner in his hand and his enemies were so afraid of him that they refused to step forward to take the banner for days afterwords, fearing he was still alive.
Anyway, a bit of sentimental from a slightly jaded mercenary. Also always remember… a Marik will always pay you to shoot another Marik, and Marik money is always good, so Glory to Marik. :p

My absolute favorite mech and the most powerful mech in any close quarters environment.
That is mostly because all an enemy cares about are those AC20s, while completely ignoring the fact that unlike with a fafnir that is pretty much just torso the king crab got arms and pincers. It happened very often that a light mech dodges the first salvo of shots, gets cocky and tries to get to my back just to end up with a squashed cockpit because like I said they thought they were out of harms way after the salvo.
While the mech isn't in good long term fights, I usually am quick enough at doing what I am supposed to be doing to prevent it from becoming an issue.

  • @Chris_Sizemore
    @Chris_Sizemore 2 года назад +133

The original 000 design of the King Crab is a specialized anti-assault mech design. Against a slow, lumbering opponent the AC-20s are lethal. An actual Atlas killer.
That said, the real bane of this design is fast, agile mechs. If light and medium mechs are willing to take the risk and engage the King Crab they can peck it to death. The AC20 ammo won't last long. The LRM ammo will quickly deplete as well. The large laser isn't enough firepower to scare off a lance of light mechs. As long as you can avoid melee and getting within the short range of the AC20s it should be possible to wear the king out.
Considering the battlefield of the Succession Wars, the Atlas is the superior design. Medium and light mechs all dream of swarming an Atlas and taking it down. With a King Crab you can do more than dream. With the Atlas? Those mechs are in for a rude awakening as the medium ranged weapons of an Atlas have enough endurance to wear down the swarm one mech at a time. The battlefields of the Succession Wars are mostly medium mechs. Assault mechs are a very small percentage of the mechs a typical regiment would deploy. Production for light and medium mechs are dozens to hundreds of each design produced each year. Assault mechs are measured in the single digits per year across the entire inner sphere. When you consider this, the reason the Atlas is considered the King of the Battlefield becomes clear.

Now this, this is my baby. Flaws and all, this is far and away my FAVORITE Battlemech. There is no close second. There are many 'mechs that I like, but this is the one that I love. Of all the official variants, the Clanbuster is my favorite despite some... questionable ammunition amount choices. It's nevertheless the version that I based my personal customized version off of.
Swapping out the XL engine for its standard variant, giving it the ferro-fibrous of the original to regain the weight, and swapping out the dodgy two streak SRM-2s and the LRM-15 for a single standard SRM-6 with a ton of ammo protected by CASE. It's meant to keep the spirit of the Clanbuster while being cheaper with more readily available replacement systems in-universe for a mercenary who refuses to part with it.
Regardless, in most of its forms, this is the assault 'mech you bring to kill other assaults or heavies. The one who carves the breakthrough and slinks back to rearm. Not just the hammer in a hammer and anvil assault, but a sledgehammer to smash the opposition as quickly as possible.
Regardless of the variant, or one's preferences involving customized mechs, it's nevertheless an imposing monster. When I was being introduced to the setting through HBS Battletech back in 2018, I was enjoying my time but I really fell in love when I first saw a King Crab, and knew that I had to have one.
Thanks for giving this one the extended treatment.

The biggest thing missing from MW5 - usable Crab claws. How satisfying would it be to crumch your way through artillery barrels with those monster claws, and not even have to use heat?
As an aside, while its torso does twist in MW5, its arms only articulate up and down, not left to right - so there is still definitely some reduced lateral mobility there.

  • @wallabing
    @wallabing 2 года назад +7

Massive head area and torso makes it extremely vulnerable to LRMS raining down on it. It arms are also mounted very low making it unable to fire over simple obstacles, or hills without having to crest over it and expose itself. It's side profile is also massive making it easy to hit at all ranges. The King Crab has to hide within the confines of a urban setting to survive.

Frees up enough weight to load all the ammo you would ever need, max out the armor and fill it up with heat-sinks to deal with the additional heat of the HRs (not that bad, actually, since the ROF is much slower than the AC/20s - which is, of course, the main drawback) and _still_ enough tonnage left to upgrade the LRM to an LRM-20.

The King Crab is probably my favorite mech in BattleTech, it is what I consider a "cannibal mech", a mech that preys on mechs of its own size category, but that is actually a major drawback for an assault mech, the King Crab needs an escort, smaller faster mechs to hound foes that are "beneath" the mighty King.
A good lance formation that I run on the Table Top (classic BattleTech) is a King Crab (usually the 001), a Crab (50 ton energy boat), a Blackjack (usually the BJ-3 for the PPC's, but also for the fact that it can hit as hard as the King Crab... once), and a Phoenix Hawk with an ER PPC for chasing runners and lights.
The Crabs are reasonably tough mechs and can take a beating (any crab not getting shot at is a crab that isn't in the fight, you payed for armor, use it.), the BJ and Hawk are snipers to pick off stragglers and runners, as well as either open up holes for the Crabs, or finish what the Crabs started, and Kerensky knows, the Crabs will start a lot.

This guy just looks the absolute part. It’s something that I find is often more loved for the weapons it bears by default than for the mech itself, but I think if you pop a couple UAC/10s on it, with a scattering of medium lasers and SRM systems (say, three medium lasers and four SRM2 systems - I’m talking HBS here, more than anything as my copy of the TTG still has not arrived from the states) it will PROBABLY eat a mech a turn. Or, you can swap out those lasers and missiles for a long range package - I’ve had a lot of joy with 2 UAC5s, four LRM5s and two large lasers. I just don’t like the idea of something that slow being so short-ranged and with so little ammo, but that’s personal preference.
What I’m trying to say is, look at the mech, rather than those dual AC/20s and there’s a *lot* to love there. It is probably my favourite assault from an aesthetic position - it just looks unbelievably intimidating - and it’s flexible loadout options mean that you don’t have to just run with a couple of AC/20 shots - you can make it a viable and effective troublemaker at any range.
There is one you can obtain in MW5 that has FOUR UAC5s! It’s like having an “I win!” Button!

Swapping the AC/20s with Gauss Rifles can be a *nasty* surprise expecting a close range brawler.
The King Crab is a great design when you need something heavily armored to just plow forwards. The downside is it's not a very flexible mech and a lighter mech could wear it down at range; as long as it had enough cover.
I did use one in the HBS game; twin UAC/20s, SRMs and quad Small Lasers. It's job was to run up close as everything else fired and then *maul* whatever it met in close range. Useless at range, but once in close there was no question; you were dead.

I personally prefer to replace the torso mounted large laser with 4 medium lasers (ER medium lasers if later era) and an additional heatsink. Shorter range and probably a slightly higher heat level, but it definitely increases the short range lethality. Downgrade the the LRM20 to an LRM10, upgrade the AC20s to UAC20s, and add a pair of either SRM4s or 6s and and watch as you basically turn the entire front arc of your machine into a kill zone.

The Atlas is the meathead mech. Throw it at things and forget it. The King Crab feels more intelligent, like a brooding ambush predator that strikes so suddenly and viciously you almost don't register it. People are anxious at squaring up to an Atlas, Mechwarriors *fear* fighting a King Crab.

My all time favourite Battlemech! It may not posses the near invulnerability of an Atlas, the reach of an Awesome, or the mobility of a Victor or Highlander, but the sheer firepower in its pincers alone will make any of them think twice before engaging it, especially up close. The clan buster is possibly the most dangerous as it can give even clan omnimechs a run for their c-bills. It also has one of the best cockpits in terms of room and peripheral vision. All in all an excellent briefing on this crustaceous colossus.
P.S perhaps you may look into Defiance Industries Fafnir in future. It is another fearsome 100 ton monster with a colourful history.

the snap of the king crab pincers is heard twice
    once when they snap closed
and once when the ac-20s fire

Now, I'm a crab man. Twin AC/20's will do that.

@Red, 18:08 "Strangely colored"... I know it's been forever and a day since you wrote and recorded this, but can you clarify what color? And what shape, if specific, the barrel had? I'm (very slowly) working on a lore weapon variants mod using every speck of info I can. The little details matter.

That specific variant of the King Crab's PPC's apparently were an off-colour.

I remember when I still played MWO, I used to field a KGC with six Rotary AC2s. That was one mean BRRRT!-dispenser. Even more so since you could hide one half of the mech in cover and fire three RAC-2s at a time without ghost-heat penalty.

in battletech i give mine two ac10 an lrm15 and two medium lasers. this lets me max out the armour and with five tons of ammo it has all the endurance it needs. two of these make perfect backup for my atlas.
