Hey Josh absolutely love your stuff, been following you for about seven years or so but adding Randy is the icing and cherry on top freaking A love you Randy!
Great interview! Well stated that HAM can become a hobby when you really just want radio as an accessory in your life, and that is where GRMS comes in. I'd love more GRMS deep dives!
i agree with randy for the off roading group using gmrs. i have a radioity(sp?) installed in my jeep and have 5 ht's the good one goes to my best friend and the blisterpack goes to who ever doesn't have one. funny story at least to me. i was running around asking about how much charge everyone had on the radios as i have a charger that i carry with me if someone needed to use it. one of the guys asked how my charge on my radio was. i was so confused then realized that he didn't know what i had and was like my radio is hard wired, if my radio battery dies that is the least of my worries.
Great show, I love Randy's sense of humor. If you can't laugh at his show, you shouldn't be watching! GMRS, HAM & CB etc. are all tools we need, especially if they save lives as well as having a different purpose. Love today's show, we need more videos like this!👍🤓

I started binge watching Randy's channel after seeing this episode. I've been a ham for about 15 years, and it's a great hobby for me, but I see the value of GMRS for those times when I'm in a remote area and need to communicate with non-hams. There's no way my wife and kiddo are going to get their ham licenses, but $35 and 48 hours wait time got me a GMRS license. I guess I'm a member of TWO cults now. 😀
What's really cool is that the Rubicon Jeep is named after the most famous Jeep trail called "The Rubicon" in which the Jeep operator literally walks the Jeep over the trail. An AnyTone 878/868 handheld can be opened up with that AT Options software to do Ham (220, 440, & 1.25 meter), DMR, GMRS, FRS, & MURS, no CB or Ham HF frequencies
We want Randy back. I am newly interested in both HAM and GMRS. And jumping down the rabbit hole to learn and study. So far both of you are my 2 favorite channels, so it was really nice to stumble across this collaboration, I really enjoyed it.
Excellent show, should make this a regular event. Quarterly, yearly or something. Enjoyed this immensely. Thank you both for the "Infotainment". And BTW I do have a license for HAM and GMRS and also use MURS at times.
Great interview, I found you through Randy. You guys interact together great together. If you do a future video with him, I'd love to hear you both cover the best all-around radios that allow you to use all formats regardless of licensing assuming you are in an SHTF or in a place where licensing and regulation don't matter.
There are different solutions for different people. I am a ham and participate in 2m & 70cm bands. I have no current interest in GMRS, but would like to have the capability to monitor our local GMRS repeater. So I just jailbroke my Baofeng UV-5r, which allows me to do all these things with one radio, and not piss anybody off who isn’t already incurably that.
I took my ham test today and the proctors were instantly telling me to get my general. Like Randy, why? It's a hobby. It's fun. I'm not chasing some false sense of prestige by collecting licenses. Love that you guys are keeping it fresh.
I live down the street from the fairgrounds in Xenia …home of ham fest. We only get slightly offended when you all say Dayton… lol always glad to have the ham operators in town. I’m a GMRS/jeep guy but ham is cool too …
@notarubicon use MURS radio for VHF, license free, not busy, you get 5 channels with many more fars than GMRS (generally speaking), just a suggestion >do what you want
I'm a member of our county's volunteer emergency communications groups Yes, we are primarily amateur radio, but we also have access to government frequencies when required. I also have GMRS/FRS, MURS, and CB radios. Never know when you need comms with third parties.
Josh great podcast! I think Randy grow so fast, because he teach a new cheap way of communication and he put himself at same level than me. Some Ham licensed guys, think are gods!
Being a Canadian gmrs is restricted like frs so im a little jealous. I've been watching both of you for quite a while now and really enjoyed seeing the two of you work together. Would definitely enjoy to see more of the same. Thanks again awesome show!!!
Best stream ever. Looking forward to the next collab. Would love to see a series of videos where Randy takes you, or Mike or Jason to a remote location to do a POTA. 69s.
This video must have led up to the pota sota video you guys did together. That video was the reason i am now a ham. And randy is reason i have gmrs licence. Love the humor in his videos.
most people, not saying NotARubicon, but most that buy a radio for bug out etc buy a ham radio and throw into a bag, and when they need it, they will have no clue what to do, but getting a license allows for them to learn and know what to do, they learn the 2m 70cm HF etc and know what the standard frq are for them and the most common offsets etc, so in a time of a need and no cell service they have a chance of getting the comms out that they need.
Funny about the “expert” comments. I posted a picture of my antenna setup for my Gladiator on a GMRS page, and got 75 people telling me how I did it wrong. Funny thing is, the antenna works fine and the SWR is low. I’ve been doing radio stuff between military and hobbyist for almost 40 years, and know there are many ways to make this stuff work. I don’t disparage others for their installations, and I absolutely hate CB radio myths/folklore.
I dont know how come there is always some kinda of hate for this or that. I started with CB radio ( I get them for cheap or free) as of today I applied for my GMRS license and eventually I will get my HAM. Im buying some decent SW radio to add to my comms. Im keeping all my equipment. When SHTF none of that hate will matter, what it will matter is your ability to communicate or at least, be informed.
I've come to realize most GMRS licensees in Colorado are also HAM's so our main GMRS repeaters are used for rag-chew quite a bit. I have heard a few accidentally ident with their HAM call on GMRS too.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse I'm not sure really as I have both my GMRS and HAM ticket and enjoy the friendly conversation on both services. There's a public GMRS repeater a stones throw away from me but aside from a kid getting ahold of a radio and transmitting random noises once, it is pretty dead.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse A lot of us just have them as a "Just in case" kind of thing. So much of our communications infrastructure is based through the internet and public cell networks that can be disrupted or purposely shut off quite easily. When we refer to SHTF plans and events, that's exactly what we mean. Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Much like how it's better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war.
What a blast! Two-way radio has many flavors and it's great to have a proponent like Randy out there to give us common-term explanations to using GMRS. Great show guys!
I watch both of you. What I got out of this was that GRMS is not my need. I have no one to talk to. However, I would enjoy being able to listen, so the radio with 999 preload sounds interesting. Having watched tons of HAM Radio videos, I don't think I could follow all the call sign talk. Short term memory issue.
I have both a ham and GMRS License. I use my ham for hitting repeaters when out hiking for emergencies and for being a Cert operator for our county. I (and my wife) use my GMRS License to use between myself and her between work and home (2 miles) for emergency or when cell the signal goes down. Different but each has their use 🙂

I survived the FCC website, paid my fee, got a license (WRXA492) and bought 4 radios. When I get around to buying a GOOD radio, I will use your affiliate link. Thanks again! - Tropical Tom Garcia
Kenwood V71a is a great dual purpose mobile radio for Ham/GMRS with simple mod. 50w on VHF and UHF.
Randy is the man! Love his commentary and education on these radios. Been watching Josh a long time and own two baufang because of him. Great radios
I have baofengs but I bought the kg-935g and find it to be a great radio!
Me too I got it because of notarubicon. I love the kg-935g
I have been a Ham since 1995 and recently snagged a GMRS license also (WRWQ208). I got a Radioddity GM-30 and I am satisfied with my choice.
Great show, I love Randy's sense of humor. If you can't laugh at his show, you shouldn't be watching! GMRS, HAM & CB etc. are all tools we need, especially if they save lives as well as having a different purpose. Love today's show, we need more videos like this!👍🤓
I did my foundation licence in the Uk during lockdown.....got some gear.....listened for a good time.......what I heard didn't make me want to progress any further.
Well said
I enjoy all radio modes, and understand people not having a interest in continuing in communication.
These guys are interesting.
What's really cool is that the Rubicon Jeep is named after the most famous Jeep trail called "The Rubicon" in which the Jeep operator literally walks the Jeep over the trail. Located in El Dorado county, CA. Both y'all are great to watch and listen to, that's why subscribed to both y'all and I love radio. For GMRS, I like my Midland MXT400 mobile radio.
I thought it referred to the river that Caesar crossed before waging a civil war on Rome.
*"LET THE DIE BE CAST"*
Josh, bring Randy back, you two are fun together 🙂
PS: studied your ham courses, got my General, first try, KD9***
Today I applied for GMRS license and bought a UV9GX on line.
Lots of "Ham radio vs GMRS" noise out there, the answer is: BOTH
I have cb, gmrs & ham. Wish I could get all 3 in one chassis. Had to get tech license for APRS. Bought kg-1000g because of notarubicon videos. Loving my ftm-400. I watch both of you.
Tyt th9800 what i run in my car
An AnyTone 878/868 handheld can be opened up with that AT Options software to do Ham (220, 440, & 1.25 meter), DMR, GMRS, FRS, & MURS, no CB or Ham HF frequencies
We want Randy back. I am newly interested in both HAM and GMRS. And jumping down the rabbit hole to learn and study. So far both of you are my 2 favorite channels, so it was really nice to stumble across this collaboration, I really enjoyed it.
He and I just recorded a video today. He’s 45 minutes from me. 🤘
@@HamRadioCrashCourse I think I just got the notification!! Thanks :)
@@HamRadioCrashCourse I'm guessing it's not posted yet lol I went looking :)
Excellent show, should make this a regular event. Quarterly, yearly or something. Enjoyed this immensely. Thank you both for the "Infotainment". And BTW I do have a license for HAM and GMRS and also use MURS at times.
I'm a ham and just got into gmrs and I'm pretty excited about being able to get the family setup and on the air.
Great interview, I found you through Randy. You guys interact together great together. If you do a future video with him, I'd love to hear you both cover the best all-around radios that allow you to use all formats regardless of licensing assuming you are in an SHTF or in a place where licensing and regulation don't matter.
Randy is a good guy. We’ll have him back on for sure.
You can never have too much of Randy. He's great!
Any Randy is too much he is an azz...
Oh no hide, here comes a Sad Ham🤣🤣🤣
Yea Randy's good man he's got a great channel❤
I love Randy Randy so cool man❤😊
I took my ham test today and the proctors were instantly telling me to get my general. Like Randy, why? It's a hobby. It's fun. I'm not chasing some false sense of prestige by collecting licenses. Love that you guys are keeping it fresh.
Two of most favorite channel talking great work you all
I live down the street from the fairgrounds in Xenia …home of ham fest. We only get slightly offended when you all say Dayton… lol always glad to have the ham operators in town. I’m a GMRS/jeep guy but ham is cool too …
Thanks for watching!
Great video. Randy is an acquired taste...And I think I'm becoming addicted to his humor. 😋
That was great I support all of radio . Broadcaster's shortwave listener's CB HAM GMRS MURS all of it is great ! 73's Boston NY
This was a really good chat. Lots of good questions
THANKS, JUST GETTING INTO GMRS AND THIS IS VERY INFOMRTIVE
Josh great podcast!
I think Randy grow so fast, because he teach a new cheap way of communication and he put himself at same level than me.
Some Ham licensed guys, think are gods!
Best video to date imo. Randy is a hoot. Please have him on more often. Not sure why Amazon does not carry the kg1000g?
As a ham and GMRS, I love watching his channel. Even the comments against sad hams, he is funny... and right. I've been guilty of it as well.
Being a Canadian gmrs is restricted like frs so im a little jealous.
I've been watching both of you for quite a while now and really enjoyed seeing the two of you work together. Would definitely enjoy to see more of the same.
Thanks again awesome show!!!
Great chat guys! Always a big fan of both of y'all's edutainfull content.
Well that’s nice to hear! Thanks for joining us on the air.
Great show guys! Love watching both your videos. I have ham and GMRS licenses.
most people, not saying NotARubicon, but most that buy a radio for bug out etc buy a ham radio and throw into a bag, and when they need it, they will have no clue what to do, but getting a license allows for them to learn and know what to do, they learn the 2m 70cm HF etc and know what the standard frq are for them and the most common offsets etc, so in a time of a need and no cell service they have a chance of getting the comms out that they need.
Look, I like you. I like off-roading, I started off-roading 50 years ago. Basically I love off-road and radio. Thank you for everything you both do.
Thanks! Great look on life from fellow jeepster, Ham, GMRS
Thank you!
I'm just here for NotARubicon, the Emperor Elf of GMRS & the Saint of The Salton Sea.
I've come to realize most GMRS licensees in Colorado are also HAM's so our main GMRS repeaters are used for rag-chew quite a bit. I have heard a few accidentally ident with their HAM call on GMRS too.
What else would a GMRS repeater be for most of the time?
By far the best video from both/either of you. Kudos
Great colab right here! Really appreciate everything Randy is doing. I enjoy both of your channels and it was great seeing you guys get together.
Thanks Randy and Josh! (and the vendors that keep them making videos)

What a blast! Two-way radio has many flavors and it's great to have a proponent like Randy out there to give us common-term explanations to using GMRS. Great show guys!
I rarely watch videos that are over 20 minutes long but this one was nice to enjoy 2 cups of coffee with. Well Done.
If you have trouble like I did hitting repeaters. I got a yagi pointed it and I am on the air. A three element laird was $79
I watch both of you.
This was awesome. I will 100% watch more of you two.
In Southern California GMRS repeaters have rag chewing all day and night. There's even a renegade repeater. Half the people on GMRS are also Hams.
