- (From November 2, 2021) This is our seventh podcast episode in the first season. And we’ve done this enough now to get into a rhythm. If you’ve listened to previous episodes, you know that we’ve kept the topics tightly focused on just one aspect of fly fishing for trout. And before we dig into those topics we always do a question and answer session with my friends.
But in this episode we mix it up. This is the Freewheelin’ Troutbitten, with an hour long question and answer session - just a freeform conversation about trout fishing on a fly rod and a few other things mixed in.
It's a fun discussion filled with details and tactical takeaways, with some good disagreements, differing opinions and good humor.
We Discuss the Following
Favorite Pheasant Tails
Junk Flies
Most memorable loss of gear
Can you fish an area so much that it becomes unethical?
Pet peeves of social media

Displacing trout
The biggest lies in the fly fishing industry
What skill most helps anglers get to the next level?
Favorite months of the year to fish
What holds anglers back the most?

This was one of my favorites. Listening to it again now. Thanks Dom & crew.
Cheers. One of my favorites too. This is about the time where we started hitting our rhythm. Better audio, good flow, etc.
Pheasant tail formula: copper bead, competition nymph hook, small copper wire, tie tail and rib in at same spot, wrap PT forward, rib, then add very small collar of Diamondbrite Peacock dubbing, small red thread hot spot at collar.
Okay
@@Troutbitten Nothing new or exciting. Just my confidence pattern. I try tons of variations, but this one seems to work...most of the time. I think it's as much the peacock dubbing as anything else. I use the same dubbing on ODTB's Jack Daniels, Prince Nymphs, and other patterns and it will outperform other more "natural" dubbing options. Plus, this version (I also tie the same on a jig hook with slotted bead) takes like 3 minutes to tie. In the end, it's the presentation that matters. So, simple, inexpensive, easily-producible, correctly proportioned and sized, confidence-building patterns make up the majority of my box.
When someone says they are fishing 25 ft away .is that 25 ft from you or 25 ft from the tip of the rod ?
I'm glad you asked! I have a full article about all that, over at Troutbitten. Here it is:
Q&A: How Do You Measure Your Fishing Distance?
troutbitten.com/2024/01/07/qa-how-do-you-measure-your-fishing-distance/
To me, it's the same as anything else. Distance is measured from where you stand -- from where you are. No one talks about shooting distances from the end of the barrel of a rifle, for example. It's from where you stand.
Cheers.
@Troutbitten thank you I knew you were the one to come too
