i liked that the show highlights the similarities between diana and philip. they’re both outsiders who married in and married future monarchs. so they’re in the same position but completely different people
Great point, Tristan. I think Philip initially thought that Diana would be like him in a way so they would get along. But like you pointed out, they are very different people.
To me it wasnt a romantic affair but it was like a companionship bestie affair. Like how Elizabeth and Poarchie...non romantic but they bond over horse racing And Phillip and Penny bond over carriages Phillip does love QE2 however...lover not a bestie xD (And gurl in ep 1 you told us you were in the PH, tara fan meet hahaha)
That seems to be the case. They always give Philip his "random hobby episode" every season, so this episode felt like that. Omggg, lmfaoo. Booking my Grab now. Stuck in EDSA traffic.
Peter Morgan always does this, he dedicates an episode or two to a Prince Philip storyline, and i personally never care for them, but he seems to think he is so interesting. And regarding your question, i think is very much possible, but we will never know for sure.
I thought the story line with Penny & Phillip was more to contrast how he treated Penny (very distant family) vs Diana (close family) more than anything!
Ohhhhh, interesting. I initially never saw it like that but you have a good point. I think I was honestly too distracted at the possible implications of their relationship.
Welllllll prince phillip actually treated diana very well! Diana said herself phillip was the most supportive of the whole family! People always ignore that its almost like they reject reality their letters to each other are even public.
This episode makes it look like Prince Philip had just taken up this hobby, when by this point Philip had given up polo and started carriage driving 20 years before this episode. They should have had Tobias Memzies' Philip get hurt and discover carriage driving!
The Philip and Penny relationship reminds me of the Eve Polastri and Bill relationship in Killing Eve, and I used to have a relationship like that with my work colleague when I was in my early 20s and he was in his 50s. We were VERY close besties but it was always platonic. I even accidentally called him Dad one time. Maybe in another life or universe we could have been more than besties, but in this life, we had a wonderfully close and safe relationship where he could have companionship outside the home (his wife was disabled and housebound) and I had a parent/child-like relationship to make up for gaps in my relationship with my own parents.
The woman whom Philip was becoming close friends with was Penelope Knatchbull, the wife of his godson and distant cousin (a descendant of Lord Mountbatten). He had been engaged in his carriage driving hobby and competitions since the early 1970s and was introducing Penelope to his hobby around this time - early 1990s. Also, Philip found out about Diana's connection to Andrew Morton's book AFTER the scare tactics against Dr. James Colhurst and Andrew Morton. And Penelope probably learned from her husband, Norton Knatchbull, who already had a strong connection to the Royal Family . . . being Philip's first cousin once removed and Lord Mountbatten's grandson. Also, I believe the scenes between Philip and Penelope served as a connection to Philip's advice to both her and Diana about acquiring a real hobby - more or less an obsession - to help deal with one's difficulties and self-development outside of a marriage. This advice played into his conversation with Elizabeth near the episode's end. I found Elizabeth's reaction to his words a little hypocritical, considering she already had her own hobby (or obsession) outside of the marriage - breeding horses and horse racing.
Penny Knatchbull is a member of the Mountbatten family (by marriage). It's an open secret that there was a very intimate relationship for several decades between her and Philip. Exactly how "intimate?" Well, those who like to believe Philip & the Queen were the perfect love story tend to try and suggest it was "father daughter", those a bit less naive (& understand how aristocratic tended to work) would assume she was his mistress. She certainly spent almost every day at the farm in Sandringham that Philip retired too for the last few years of his life, until COVID forced him back to Windsor and was one of the tiny number of people to attend his funeral.
Oh girl I too was bored with the Philip storyline. All it did was remind me of how much I miss Tobias (my personal favourite Phil overall). I'm sure Duke E supported tapping Diana's phone and the whole bit. But one thing about him when it came to her, I also believe he'd at least admonish her directly, whether face to face or on the phone. I rate that.
13:57 Well it was more of a be quiet or the system will fail than a be quiet if you know what's good a you. So not really a threat but rather some stringent advice about their harsh reality. And the tapping of phones feels like MI5 imo. I don't think even the Queen is aware of their shenanigans. Plausible deniability and all that.
I know that Diana was paranoid about being spied on, but even the show offered plausible deniability about what was happening. Those clicks were due to the palace's outdated switchboards, the break-in at Morton's home was just a random attack, etc. But based on what some palace observers have said it's highly likely that Diana was being monitored, especially as her and Charles's marriage was breaking down.
Probably not a stand alone review. Although I am thinking of making a video where I tied rank all the shows I watched this year. I actually got the screener for this past season, but just never made time to watch it.
The carriage thing was a big passion for Prince Philip so I disagree with you, it’s a nice touch. I watched his funeral and they said his granddaughter took over this passion and I think that was so cute 😊
I think most British people would get the reference to carriage driving and Prince Phillip, and would feel it's a positive, good thing. It was good that he managed to find a way to continue his love of horses even after he was unable to ride. It'll be interesting to see how Harry's book is received... probably it'll do better in the States than in the UK. For many years Harry was by far the most popular of the Royals here. Even more so than the Queen. Since he announced that he was giving up Royal duties and moving to California, his popularitiy has plummeted. Only Andrew is less popular than him now.
Yeah tbh, I found this to be the most dull season of the Crown thus far. The carriage riding storyline is but one example. It is interesting to see the contract between how The Crown shows Tony Blair compared the Queen, also written by Peter Morgan though. See how that pans out in the next season.
@@JasminGeigle maybe. I thought we were going to see Diana’s death and funeral in this season. I am always interested to see how the PM’s are portrayed as well. I was surprised to see Mr Grey treated so sympathetically and even dropping a hint of sympathy for his infidelity.
Yeah...Phillip's story was so random, time-consuming and a snoozefest. Should have rather focused on the book's development?? its impact and RF + public's reaction to it.
False. Phillip explicitally states in a later episode that his relationship with Penny is not physical, and there are no scenes implying anything more than an emotional connection
Time stamps are in the description box. ✌🏽

I think that's because Diana began to push him away. But also perhaps that Penny with the loose of a child just needed him more.
Howzabout Diana's tiara with those dangling teardrop pearls? Wow!

That's very sweet. Thanks for sharing that, Bonny. Although the Killing Eve reference initially felt like a jump scare.
