As an American teacher living and working in one of the unsupported African countries, I am shocked and saddened by this. I use Starlink to create my lesson plans, to help educate local students using Canva and other software, to help create videos that engage with the locals and abroad. The local internet is suffocatingly slow and prohibitively expensive, more so than Starlink if one were to use as much as we have to. I do hope that Musk reconsiders this terrible decision.
Im sure this has to do with the countries either not cooperating or they dont want starlink available there. Im sure Musk would want to continue taking your subscription money.
The challenge in Africa is that, in many countries, governments lack the technical expertise to effectively manage agreements with companies like Starlink. Additionally, corruption is a significant issue; officials often expect bribes to facilitate these agreements. Living in Guinea-Bissau, I believe it will be very difficult for Starlink to secure the necessary approvals. It's unfortunate because the internet here in Bissau is highly unstable, with bandwidth limited to just 4 Mbps, which makes it difficult to work efficiently.
As far as I know, South Africa has unreaonable demands to approve Starlink like a majority local ownership and hiring quotas for ‚previously disadvantaged (PDI)‘ groups instead of a pure merit system. No wonder that Elon would not bend over.. Voters in these countries have to do the work for changes.
Imagine building a system to connect to the internet anywhere on the planet and getting blocked because it's "not supported." Regulation putting its boot on innovation's neck once again...
Now discuss the laws within a range of countries for licensing telecommunications services and the penalties for any Starlink or SpaceX employee who happens to pass through that country while their employer is breaking local law. Incarceration is always a real threat, not just for executive staff, particularly if that country has previously issued a cease and desist notice. It is not just a case of spectrum control, in the West, many countries use such licensing to enforce traffic monitoring. Naturally, states take a dim view of anyone trying to defeat the state.
I think its a bluff. They are trying to increase their customer base not vice versa..i am hoping this is just a tick box show.. There are ppl who genuinely need the service for work, educational and health reasons..dont fuck this up Elon
Starlink have no choice but to do this. They can face large fines for breaking the law. Anyone who thinks it's not fair should not of intentionally broke teams of use. Starlink do not owe these people anything.
Some governments' requests should be completely disregarded, specially those of tyrannical and totalitarian ones. I know the complaints were to the ITU and not directly to Starlink, but even ITU should have simply disregarded those requests.
Your statement is almost universally disliked on this subject. The whole point of the system is for global access to the internet. Not only is this VERY important for services like communication networks for emergency services but also the knowledge base the internet can provide to disconnected regions of the world.
As far as I know, South Africa has unreasonable demands to approve Starlink like a 30% local ownership under the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) rules and hiring quotas for ‚historically underpriviledged‘ groups instead of a pure merit system. No wonder that Elon would not bend over.. Voters in these countries have to do the work for changes.
What about buying from another country but activating it in another supported country? asking cause was intending to buy a gen 3 from the US and activate it in a supported country in Africa (they only sell gen 2 here).

I would wait until the deadline and see if your connection actually gets shut off. If it doesn't, try the methods mentioned in the video. The easiest one is to toggle on Mobile Priority data via the toggle on your account dashboard. See if that resets the 2 month clock. If not, you can try upgrading to Mobile-Global.
If you're an overlander, 2 months is ridiculous, for example if you shipped your vehicle from another country to North America, you get a US Visa for 5 years but you must leave every 6 months, so 2 months is not long enough.
