I have a work colleague who runs sub 500 pound cars, buys second hand clothes all his life but owns 2 houses and woodland with no mortgage...he does treat the family to a two week holiday to menorca each year and that is his big spend
Yep I sold a scrap Vectra with chain rattle and various other issues for £200 and was on Facebook a day later for £500 with none of the issues listed in the advert 🤣
“Fidji” is a run out special edition before the new shape Megane came in. I had one in Scenic guise with the 1.6 16v K4M engine from new for 15 years. Quite a nice comfortable car. Ours had an uneven idle for all its life so nothing to worry about.
Statistically cars are lasting longer now on average than they ever have. Whether that will remain true in the future with the increasingly complex and unrepairable computer systems is yet to be seen.
I've still got a 2001 model. 120K miles, and everything still works, even the a/c. It had a cambelt change 16 years ago. Total repairs have been numerous coil packs, crank sensor, and a wheel bearing.
I am totally with you on having greater pleasure running a motley bunch of old cars verses one new one. Having owned new cars before the financial hit takes the pleasure away and the new car buzz only lasts a few weeks.
Put it through an MOT or pre MOT and then pass it to Hubnut, ideal for them :-) Ian is struggling with some of his fleet as daily drivers, especially with two drivers and one learner :-)
Owned one new back in 2000 and had loads since then, including hatches, coupés, Scenics and cabriolets. They’re great cars and are reliable cars. Coil packs can cause problems, but have been improved over the years. Generally, if changing a coil pack, they should all be replaced, as should plugs. Uneven idle will be throttle body. Although the same engine, the 1.4 16v is more likely to snap the timing belt than the 1.6 16v. Other issues are non-starting due to crank sensors giving up but easy to change and driveshaft outer boots failing for fun. The oil leak from the top end is probably due to poorly fitted cam seals after a belt change -or even worse, someone has reused the ones they prised out to lock the cams during the belt change. On the Fidji (pronounced as in the country) that part leather is real leather! I’ve had every mark of the the Megane and these 1999-2002 models and the Mk3 diesel Coupes are by far the best.
I worked with a couple of people who took the mickey out of me coz my car cost me a grand. I pointed out to them that I could work 3 shifts less a month because I wasn’t paying £450 a month, like they were, just to feel like they were doing well
I had someone recently taken the P??? out of me because I have a 2016 Leon 2.0D FR DSG, which I've had since new and only done 48k. He said he had a £76k BMW, and when I asked did he pay cash for it the answer was no, it was on finance. So I said it's not your car then which took the smile off his face 😂😂😂😂
Lean 16 plate 2L FR (assuming it’s the 184bhp spec) in DSG is still a respected and sought after car. Basically a cheaper golf gtd. Anyone who says otherwise is just a W⚓️
Back in the 90s I bought an old 1980 vauxhall cavalier for £200. Had 3 years of cheap trouble free motoring and it was still going strong when I sold it and bought another cavalier for £275 which I also had for 2 years before it was stolen. Sadly in London you can no longer do this as it's likely these old cars wouldn't pass the ULEZ requirements.
I had the Megane coupe Y reg and I loved it, it was a pocket rocket. Had a few things repaired over 4 years of ownership but did most of the engine work myself ( injectors/sparks/air filter) very easy to work on and fix. Very comfortable leather interior, but, like that one the lacquer and general paint work suffered.
Too useful to scrap, I had a 1.9 diesel, very economical i only did oil changes, 2 wipers, and a battery in 3 years 35000 miles, and very very comfortable, i'd be happy to have another one.
Would definitely put that through an MOT. Had a 2003 MK2 for 16 years, got rid of it with 182k miles and if it wasn't for its electrical gremlins, would have kept it for even longer. Was a brilliant car mechanically and never had an issue with rust, they're fab cars 😊
Both the 1.4 16 valve and the 1.6 16 valve were prone to coil pack failure back in the day and it was often advisable to replace in pairs as usually if one went another wasn't far behind. The name Fidji is pronounced Fiji (like the country. I'll be at Rustival with my pre facelift Mégane Coupe Fidji, you can't miss it as it's sunflower yellow. 😅
my wife has on 07 reg peugeot 3071.6HDI, had it from 1 year old. Now worth very little but runs well. It's now pre dinged so no worries parking in the supermarket. Not worth changing as long as it only costs serviceing/ tyres/brakes
In the past I ran a Talbot Alpine which cost me £225 and a Cavalier I paid £175 for. Both served me well for a couple of years and I sold them for what I paid. Currently running a Touran I bought new which has now covered 218,000 without any problems at all. Bangernomics rocks if you have the ability to fix things if required.
James. That’s my neighbour car. Renault. The ac doesn’t work as I Tryed the regas is back in 2919. Pump or orifice pipe broken. It will not gas. High and low side stay the same pressure. Love to see the car myself. Trade it out.
Love these, they rarely rust, and are a nice comfortable drive... the last good Renault before it all went belly up. The Air Con will probably still work perfectly and hold gas too.
Mate, 5 moths ago with a 12 mont ticket, I'd have given you £700 with no comeback, Trade sale terms. I got a 407 back then, late '05 and its ace. Nowt wrong with old cars. Less to go wrong than with the modern stuff you sell. As a sh1tbox for someone carrying tools for work, that money for 1 year's motoring, you cannot fault it.
My father had one of those. A nice comfortable car and quite nippy, but hardly any space in the back. I wonder if it was his way of saying to my younger siblings that they are grown up now, and he didn't need to have anything big enough for them to ride around in as well. French build quality let it down. By 35,000 miles it was rattling inside like a box of Lego but it never let anyone down.
Put it through a MOT get £500-700 could, be classed as a modern classic in 3 years or so don't see too many on the road and there are some people out there who would love to have the chance to have their first car again,
@@bill-a-bongbill6228 Agree. Now rare. Worth MOTing and tidying up I'd have thought. There appears to be increasing demand for 90s/2000s cars in nice condition, which this potentially is.

mk1 meganes like going through coil packs if left sitting, the recirc valve behind the dash likes making a racket on startup and they suffer with tdc sensors causing no starts (cheap on ebay sub £10 and about 10 mins to fit - i replaced them for peace on mind when i bought mine). i have had 3 of them including 2 convertibles

Any vibration could be from a worn gearbox mount they suffer them badly but once its done its like a new car. When replacing coils replace all sparks too. Don't make them like they used to, clean wee car for what it is, the older french stuff was always very good on the underside, was rare to see lots of rust etc, not like this 10yr life cycle crap we've had since the late 2000's Edit: bangernomics is my thing, my 240k mile 22yr pd130 golf is probably the most reliable at the moment as it needs nothing now, but also have a 1992 non turbo Caravelle with 240k miles, and a TT 225 with 125k miles...all worth keeping on the road over any modern crap.
I imagine the 1.6 is less gutless than the 1.4, which in Renault 11 and 19 had a horrible flat spot just when you needed more power! I forgot they gave them those daft moustaches on the grille! Why! How many Meganes are left! You"ll have to vlog the journey (to Rustival ) if you do!
I sold 2 of these in the last year. £1495 and £1595. Sold one on Monday coincidently. But had 56k and no advisories. Also mine needed a parcel shelf. Only one i could find was £100 on eBay. Think the cats might be worth something on those aswell.
Might pass MOT. Cambelt simple enough apparently. Got lot of life in it. Bet air con doesn’t work. If passes go to Rustival in it. Replacement gear knob off eBay suspect it’s had.

Go for it James, they say any car with a full not is worth 500 quid let's text it out.
James, do the bits on the bodywork and Mot it, great for interesting content and you could always auction it and donate to a charity.
Doesn't look a bad old Hector to be honest. Will make a runaround for someone.
Definitely put it through an mot
I have a 91 and a 96 both of which I love more then any of me new things the dogs and significant other use....
Fair play
Put Chops garage logos all over it and have it as a courtesy car
Good idea
I sold 2 of these in the last year. £1495 and £1595. Sold one on Monday coincidently. But had 56k and no advisories.
Also mine needed a parcel shelf. Only one i could find was £100 on eBay.
Think the cats might be worth something on those aswell.
Put it through the MOT it would make good content for the channel 👍
Good car in its day, probably will still find a home with the retro boys. Put an mot on it, work the Chops magic and raffle it.
Might pass MOT. Cambelt simple enough apparently. Got lot of life in it. Bet air con doesn’t work. If passes go to Rustival in it. Replacement gear knob off eBay suspect it’s had.
Put it thru an MOT. if it’s like £250/300 to fix you should do it and use it as a courtesy car
mine [ one of ] 04 toyota bought 6 years ago with 98000m for £375 now on 140000m , as a retired mechanic/mot tester general motor trade person , probably best daily car ive ever had , and i dont care what the neighbours think ! ps mot it
Great cars!!! Far more reliable than later models . Sold 1 last summer with a yrs mot 33k 1 owner but 3rd world ugly for £600 !!!! ...... put in for pre mot to check if so test it and raffle it at £2 a ticket !!!! THIS CAR NEEDS SAVING NOT SCRAPPING!!! ITS EVEN ULEZ FOR US THAT LIVE NEAR LONDON!!!
Well that had to be one Megane that was borderline okay eventually!!
