Beautiful performance of a wonderful classic, and such a warm and enthusiastic reaction! Thanks, RR!
Well said, I have listened to the '67 original thousands of times in my 53 years on this little dusty ball. The original and this song are two completely different versions. A huge bow to the people mixing the sound! A full orchestra, a choir, guitars, bass, drums, B3 organ, piano and gorgeous vocal from Gary Brooker. Also, righteous recognition to the orchestral arranger. The choice to start the melody in the minor key and present a beautiful Tierce de Picardie before the vocal starts was inspired! Hallelujah!
That they brought an Orchestra as accompaniment and with a choir is a true sign of real respect for this piece of music history. And not to mention it's not even the country of its birth. Love It! The Danes Killed it.
The Orchestra is the Danish National Symphony Orchestra (part of the danish public service radio DR), which normaly do theese outdoor concerts in the summer - Slotskoncerter (Castle concerts) every year. And the Orchestra invites the original artists of the music, they perform. This year severel of Procol Harums music .
This man sounds exactly the same 50 years later, even better, which amazes me. Love that you recognized all of the different layers. This is truly a celestial performance. I've seen it bring grown men to tears in these reactions. Haunting, chills.
Young lady, from someone who was alive back then, it is amazing to see a younger person like yourself, so beautiful and vibrant, still enjoying and celebrating this music. Thank you for your thoughtful reaction
It's so enjoyable to watch someone young appreciate the music of my youth. 1967. I had just finished my first graduate degree and started my professional life. This song was one of many of the time that left us speechless. The beginning of rock and roll and its early years was a magical time.
I was 17 years old when this first came out. A classic. I am now in my early 70’s and this song still affects me the way it did when it first came out. And yes, you’re right, there is a similar vocal sound to Phil Collins. Never thought about it before. Just subscribed to your channel. I myself am a musician of many different instruments.
Find the old version of this from the 60's to understand just how good this live orchestral version is. Brooker's voice is sounding so good and the arrangement is just superb.
Did he really? I saw a documentary about Lennon's portable juke box. I would really love to know about this as Lennon's "Strawberry Fields" and Brooker's "A Whiter Shade of Pale" are at the top of my "Desert Island Disks" list. A "Rolls" provides a smooth ride but smooth enough for a turntable? Wow!
With today's loss of Gary, I've been checking out his music and stumbled on your review. This is a beautiful live version of this and have seen it many times. Thank you for your passion for great music. It truly shows. RIP Gary.
"As the miller told his tale." This wee bit of lyric has always moved me. The song came out when I was 9 and that line seemed to light up my imagination and carry me me off to a distant time and place. It still does.
That's so wierd. With my crappy hearing and me being 46, my whole life hearing this song I thought he was saying "As the mirror told it's tale" in reference to the old Snow White story.
@@dinerouk "Wandered through my playing cards^ - Lewis Carol, Alice Through the. .. there are supposed to be a couple more literary references but I'm vold and I forget what they are. Oh well, probly in the 4th verse anyway.
The miller's tale was a disreputable story about 2 men who tried to seduce a married woman and got noplace. It ties in with this song about a man who approaches a girl and gets turned down. Her face at first just ghostly turned a whiter shade of pale = she ghosted him.
I enjoyed your reaction. You have a ear for good music. I feel for the people out there who are closed-minded to certain music. This was a masterpiece, done way better than the original in the sixties which had no orchestra or chorus. Even his voice improved.
This dude is laying down vocals on a song that was a classic in 1967- over a half century later? To sound this good? are you kidding me? God Bless him and the rest of them, to be able to do this for this video- and thank you Rogue, I could listen to your heart felt commentary all day.

What a fantastic song and voice! I was fortunate enough to not only hear Gary Brooker sing Whiter Shade of Pale live when he toured with Ringo Starr’s All Star Band but I also had the privilege to meet him backstage before the show. Great memories!
Every person on that stage killed it but shout out to the person who mixed this. That is a lot of mic to bring into perfect balance and they nailed it. You can clearly hear everything that is going on and it all sounds great together
This is the best review I have heard so far. I see and sense a natural flow of emotions and your facial expression says it all. Keep up the great reviews.
I feel so privileged to have grown up as these songs were released. I was 13 when this song came out. It moved my world at 13. So many songs wrapped around my core made me who and what I am. To this day I can be transported back by so many songs but this one is special.
It has always amazed me that this physically small country that I have always called home, consistently produces much of the world’s finest music. Songs like this and many others, have always proved my point.
I come from one of the largest nations on the planet, which has produced thousands and thousands of musicians, writing hits known the worldwide... And just like you, I had nothing to do with it either... Get over yourself...shut up and enjoy the music.
Over 70 microphones were used with every member of the choir having their own mike and every instrument being close miked. This was highly unusual---orchestras and choirs would normally have a few overhead mikes. It was recorded on 100 channels of sound. At one of the rehearsals the bass player asked if he could hear more cello in his monitor and the engineer said "sure, which one?" Attention to detail was unbelievable. Was it worth it? You bet it was.
Amazingly, this was the debut 45 single by Procol Harum in May of 1967. It became # 1 with a bullet in the UK and stayed there for SIX WEEKS! It sold over ten million copies and was played throughout the Summer of Love. Playing with the Denmark Orchestra in 2006, this arrangement, bolstered by Brooker's magnificent vocal, takes on an almost transcendental feeling.
A Whiter Shade of Pale is THE iconic song from the sixties for me. Gary Brooker's big boot in the foreground of the original video. Then, when I discovered the Denmark concert where the song was treated like a sacred piece. Well, that's when I knew that A Whiter Shade of Pale was a classical piece of music. RIP Gary Brooker. You were one of a kind.
Fantastic reaction, you are correct, there are so many beautiful things in this song. This concert was in 2006, when Gary Brooker was 61 (39 years after the original) This version is my favourite song of my lifetime.
This was always the slow dancing song that the ladies just couldn’t resist. Quite often the last song of the evening and if you were lucky, the beginning of a romantic night.
It is absolutely GREAT to see someone of your generation getting totally into a song of my generation (I was 16 in 1967 when this song came out). I never get bored of hearing this song, and your reaction epitomises the power of this song, so many decades later. Brilliant - well done! You expressed everything perfectly. I just know you'll be listening to this song time and time again!
I loved your review - it was so refreshing. This version with the Danish National Concert Orchestra and Choir complementing the band makes it a masterpiece.
Just watched this yet again. I get so much joy watching young people experience and enjoy the beautiful music made in the 60s and 70s. Lovely reaction. 😊🌹
Love watching her listening and the awe on her face. Gary Brooker was 61 there and listen to that fabulous voice!! It's amazing and he's a beautiful man. RIP Gary Brooker. I'm your age from USA, 77 now. What a performer you and your band were.
What do you get when you take one of the best classically oriented Rock Bands with one of the best, most versatile Symphony Orchestras in the world? Well........You get this an EPIC PERFORMANCE of one of the best songs ever written. I still love it. Who needs gimmicks like autotune, Beat Detective, or Quantization when you have this. Pure Talent, Right?
Gary Brooker had been working on melody inspired by classical composer Johann Sebastian Bach, saying: “Throughout 1966 I had followed with interest the work of the Jacques Loussier Trio and the Swingle Singers, who had made an art of adapting Bach pieces. Air On A G String was the starting point but the rest was invention, with constant reference to Bach-like breaks and atmosphere.” Paul McCartney who also loved Bach said he wished he had composed this song.
I just watched a video which went into Bach's influence. It is generally known that Mendelssohn revived Bach's reputation after about 80 years of neglect. But it turns out that all the major composers knew and were obsessed with Bach--Mozart and Beethoven to begin with, Mendelssohn, Chopin, etc. The general public, however, thought of Bach as "teaching music" because of the two and three part inventions and the Well-Tempered Clavier. They weren't aware of his more ambitious pieces. If you like Bach, check out Murray Perahia playing the D Major Brandenburg Concerto. It's on RUclips, and it's really amazing.
@@steveneardley7541 I have been up since 3am and played Brandenburg's concerto with my head back in the chair. I must admit it is very relaxing so much so I kept nodding off. It's good at clearing the mind.

I didn’t know there was any other version. And in truth there isn’t.
@@Boyonabicycle There are a few versions and even more covers. I’ve probably heard them all and you are correct. The moment I heard this version everything else just disappeared.
Same singer, same key, 50 years on. Not many singers can lay claim to this. Flipping amazing. That is all.
Everything in this performance is balanced perfectly.
It's THAT good. Astonishing.
Amazing performance. One of your best reactions. Such a lovely young lady.
One of the best songs ever written and performed beautifully. 👍👍
Her closed eyes and the smile on her face says it all. Doesn't matter that it's 50+ years since this amazing man first sang this haunting song.
This man sounds exactly the same 50 years later, even better, which amazes me. Love that you recognized all of the different layers. This is truly a celestial performance. I've seen it bring grown men to tears in these reactions. Haunting, chills.
True rock knows no boundaries. After 60 years, I’m still in awe of good rock.
Thing is that is not "rock".
I was 4 when it released...
This was John Lennon's favorite song. He would play it constantly on his turntable in the back of his Rolls Royce...
Wow!
@@michaelmisanthrope It's true. He loved it.
Peter Frampton also cited this as, "the most perfect song recorded."
Who is he? And nobody had a turntable in the back of a moving car.Ok, Boomer.
@@erewhon751 Who is John Lennon? OK Zoomer.
It gets better each time I hear it. That was a true gift from God.
His voice is amazing , love this RIP Gary , such great music !
I believe the derivation was from Chaucers 'Millers tale' of the 15th C
That's so wierd. With my crappy hearing and me being 46, my whole life hearing this song I thought he was saying "As the mirror told it's tale" in reference to the old Snow White story.
@@dinerouk "Wandered through my playing cards^ - Lewis Carol, Alice Through the. .. there are supposed to be a couple more literary references but I'm vold and I forget what they are. Oh well, probly in the 4th verse anyway.
Oops, old not vold, and The Miller's Tale actually one of about 25 "Tales^ from his Canterbury Tales.
I completely agree ! ☮✌
She gives a positive review of everything, whether she likes it or not. It’s how she earns money.
Why wouldn't she give a positive review of this song.Wouldn't you? Everybody loves good singing from those who can really sing .Like him.
This dude is laying down vocals on a song that was a classic in 1967- over a half century later? To sound this good? are you kidding me? God Bless him and the rest of them, to be able to do this for this video- and thank you Rogue, I could listen to your heart felt commentary all day.
STRINGS ARE SO GREAT! THIS IS ALMOST THE BEST PROCOL HARUM PERFORMANCE THAT I HAVE EVER HEARD!
This is one of my favorite performances. I love watching people, especially young people react to it. Wonderful!!!
If you like this song, then you will love '' Nights in white satin'' by the moody blues !
WHITER SHADE OF PALE and NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN.....best songs ever written.I prefer this one.....just a little bit.Because of Gary Brooker's incredible voice.Justin Hayward's voice is more romantic, and Mr.Brooker is a real DYNAMITE 👍👍👍👍👍
Breeeathe deep the gathering gloom Nuff said!!
INCREDIBLE!!! His voice has gotten better with age like a fine wine!!!
Your joy in the strings/instrumental is written all over your face, younlooknso pleased and enamored with it.
I just have to say that English rock groups are just at a different level of musicianship than the US of A! The list of British prog rockers is vast! This song brings me to tears it is so majestic!
Oh surely not. But I just loved the musical back and forth between our two countries, and others. What a time!
These guy were around about the same time as the Beatles, in fact, I believe this song was written in 1966?
Majestic! The perfect word Sir!
The perfect slow dance song. I've always loved this song. It almost makes me cry
Almost - It touches me to my very soul and will be my funeral music
Thank you so much for doing this!! I go back to high school in 1967 every time I hear this! 😊🌹
Thanks for the request! This song had pieces of everything I love
Hey Pa our record collections must be quite similar. The first 5 videos I watched are all your recommendations. Keep up the good work mate
@@MrBeej72 Probably are very much the same. Haha! Cheers mate!!
It was your requests that made me subscribe.🤣😅. I love the look on her face when the music kicks in priceless
@@RogueRxyce my recommendation Gary Moore Parasinene walkways an unbelievable song with some beautiful guitar work
I subscribed one sentence into your reaction because of your ''low key'' approach. You didn't call us ''Fam'' or beg for likes or subscriptions. You are a breath of fresh air. Plus you enjoyed one of my favorite performances.
Amazing Im 74 years old ,I was 19 years old in 1967,it's amazing his voice sounds just like it did in the sixties,Amazing!
Your smile and your voice is unbelievable. Great reaction.
What a fantastic song and voice! I was fortunate enough to not only hear Gary Brooker sing Whiter Shade of Pale live when he toured with Ringo Starr’s All Star Band but I also had the privilege to meet him backstage before the show. Great memories!
EASILY....one of the GREATEST songs ever created. Hands down.
Glad you checked if out! ❤
👍👍👍 So so true. That voice!
@@lettiegrant9447 the voice, the singing, the keyboard, the drumming, the bass, melody, the chorus, the trippy lyrics....it goes on and on...
Every person on that stage killed it but shout out to the person who mixed this. That is a lot of mic to bring into perfect balance and they nailed it. You can clearly hear everything that is going on and it all sounds great together
Grew up listening to this song. Now, a new generation can.
Nice to see the younger generation interested in our music of old. So happy to have lived through this period of music. It was the best!
What a fine singer and person, a true legend. RIP Gary!
Awesome reaction to an absolute classic track. I do love watching your reaction videos..........It doesn't hurt that you are ludicrously attractive ;)
It does hurt that you stop so much. Out of respect for the flow of the song, you could save your comments for the end. Just saying.
I was there when the world first heard this song. It’s left an indelible mark on my soul.
To those of us in our 60s.....And survived the 60s.
My favorite version, beautiful place, beautiful performance
Fantastic reaction, you are correct, there are so many beautiful things in this song. This concert was in 2006, when Gary Brooker was 61 (39 years after the original) This version is my favourite song of my lifetime.
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING PERFORMANCE BY EVERYONE.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I had the pleasure of seeing Procol Harum and Jethro Tull in concert together almost 30 yrs ago. It was great.
Lucky day for you!
One of the best musical performances i have ever heard
RIP Gary Brooker. Thank you for the music.
Gary died soon after this performance. What a tribute to the life he lived! This performance was for the ages!! RIP Gary Brooker....
This performance is from 2006, he was 61 years. Gary Brooker died on February 19, 2022. He was 76 years old. May he Rest in Peace. ✨💫
This was always the slow dancing song that the ladies just couldn’t resist. Quite often the last song of the evening and if you were lucky, the beginning of a romantic night.
🙂👍♥️🎼
It is absolutely GREAT to see someone of your generation getting totally into a song of my generation (I was 16 in 1967 when this song came out). I never get bored of hearing this song, and your reaction epitomises the power of this song, so many decades later. Brilliant - well done! You expressed everything perfectly. I just know you'll be listening to this song time and time again!
I loved your review - it was so refreshing. This version with the Danish National Concert Orchestra and Choir complementing the band makes it a masterpiece.
What a beautiful young lady. That smile lights up a room.
Just watched this yet again. I get so much joy watching young people experience and enjoy the beautiful music made in the 60s and 70s. Lovely reaction. 😊🌹
I have hope knowing that another generation can and does appreciate....
I love the original, but to see the passion in his face in this version warms my heart. New subscriber, love ur style. Thank you ✌️
he is the original
WOW.... What a great performance! Love you girl!
Air On A G String was the starting point but the rest was invention, with constant reference to Bach-like breaks and atmosphere.”
Paul McCartney who also loved Bach said he wished he had composed this song.
RIP Gary you will be sorely missed
Thank You for your wonderful review and appreciation of this song…..❤
He had a good 5000 days of life after this performance. A life well lived.
...the name is Gary Brooker - lead singer of the group "Procol Harum" from 1967 . One of the great bands from the years. Another famous song is "Homberg".
Please check out the band, the "old" versions are already top, but the matured Gary Brooker has an extraordinary, gentle voice that awakens the best feelings in me.
Very, very big thing...!
Put a full orchestra behind a classic song .....and you get magic ......as is also the case with the much reacted to Moody Blues tune Nights in White Satin ..
Their performance of that song at Red Rocks is fantastic
My dad used this song as background music for one of our family vacation videos he used to shoot. As always thanks for the beautiful memories!
This is just amazing!! Gary's voice has improved over the years!! One of the best songs ever!! I love it!
RIP. His voice never changed. From the original studio recording to this live performance. TALENT
Hey, his voice definitely changed. It got even BETTER! 😎
