Pretty educational for me because i have a seperate 2 1/2 car garage that I have been using for a personal shop and wanted to install a fireburning stove in for heat and i currently have something like 4-6 feral cats i let shelter in the winter so this will work just fine. I can put the boxes on top of the bench and they'll stay warm. Thanks.

It looks like the pipe that is being used is just galvanized ventilation pipe. If this is the case, this is not a good idea. The reason that stove pipe is more expensive has to do with different processes in manufacturing that does not produce toxic gasses like the galvanized piping does. By the time that the exhaust gets to the chimney it should be cool enough to reduce the gasses significantly but the temperatures near the clean-out are definitely worth concern.

    • @basedbear1605
      @basedbear1605 5 лет назад +1

Indeed. Heating galvanized pipe can release Zinc vapors, which are toxic. Good catch.

You can wrap a hot water coil around the drum and drive it with either a thermal siphon or pump and use it to heat the radiant floor. Thinking about doing that if I get around to doing a super-adobe shack. You would likely need a burping tank to handle over-pressure in the coil but perhaps a 2 inch clearance might be enough to keep the water < boiling temperature.

From what I understood from the guy I knew, and he explained while showing me the stove while it was burning a couple of pieces of split hardwood, the wood burns very, very slowly, lasting a long time while producing a lot of heat. A small fan is included and I think it's adjustable for speed or power. It's to push hot air out at a faster pace. The guy said that a couple normal pieces of split hardwood would burn for hours and I don't recall seeing much at all for flames; just little ones.

Regarding the nails... I use a stack of 1" rare earth magnets inside a plastic pill bottle, then I put it inside a tin can, swirl around in the ashes, and when loaded with nails, lift it out and over a container for the scrap nails. Remove the magnets from the inside of the tin can, and all the nails fall away - no mess - no fuss... Enjoy

Being so awkward looking I would consider it in the basement and let the heat radiate up to the first floor. The mass could release heat throughout the day or night to keep the upstairs warm.

At the end, someone talks about a radiant floor, and that is what I would do, but it is based on info I stumbled on this week. You could pour a concrete floor, place heavy PVC tubes into it and then top the concrete off. Two pours would be needed as the tubes otherwise tend to float to the top. Then building a stove like yours would allow the house to be heated floor up and there would be no issues of Co2 being exposed as the PVC would be sealed in the concrete. The same exhaust could be used to vent to the outside. Equal temps would be achieved throughout the house, and the concrete would serve as heating mass to hold the heat.
Where is your homestead built. I've watched most of your videos, and they are great, but would like to be able to evaluate how they would apply to my homes. One in NH and the projected one in TX.

  • @mikecorbeil

Fowl manure, chicken anyway, is great fertilizer when needing nitrates, but elderly farmer and his son once told me when I was starting my first garden during early 1980s that this manure has to be applied in very, very small doses; else, it'll burn the roots of plants. Potent birds!
I also read that blending it with, fe, cow manure helps to provide a very complete and multi-use fertilizer for various plants, but most of my crops evidently didn't suffer from absence of nitrate boost.

It is likely that the section of the piping that passes through the attic is required to be double insulated and rated for the purpose. When burning wood, the creosote from the process eventually drops out, so I am concerned that you don't have a way to get in and brush it out. However, if the stove is that much more efficient, then perhaps my concern is groundless. And yes, the outlets you covered needed to be de-energized.

Thanks for the reply. It's interesting science, what you describe, so learning more about it would surely make it all the more interesting. I wouldn't have expected such a difference, so it has me a little awed.
And it has me wondering about something I don't precisely recall in detail but which is about poor people in India, maybe also other places, using dried manure, I think from cows or cattle, to use as "firewood" for cooking.
I've stepped in fresh cow manure and didn't notice straw.

Design improvement would maybe be a hollowed out seat instead of a stuffed rounded couch look from which you will slide more easily.
A slight concave seat deeper in the back with the same rounded edges.
Just a bit sunken seat and back in a flowing angle like the inside curve of a standard boomerang having the bend sit below edge level to help with sitting since you’re not sitting on but slightly into the mass.
Still looks great though, it’s the best looking one I’ve seen texture wise and its overall dimensions, a beautiful consistent earthy look which is partly due to its current dimensions I have to admit.
It reminds me of a perfect looking old Mexican American adobe house.

I wanted to ask if you had trouble with the ash removal since the clean out is a long way from the combustion chamber and it seemes to be sealed. Was this a problem in the long run? did you have to upgrade the combustion chamber for heavy cleaning? Im guessing that a door placed on the top of the barrel would be pretty fair.

A reflector mounted on the wall behind the chimney would increase efficiency.... you could also put some heat sinks around the chimney to create more heated surface area...other than that well dont in putting a mass of dirt inside your house with a pipe through it....
