I really hope Lucas Steele(Anatole From Natasha, Pierre, and The Great Comet of 1812)becomes the next Michael Dorsey, should this show last after Santino’s contract expires. If not, then I pray he will at least be chosen for the tour of this show! His Falsetto is AMAZING as well!
I am so utterly bothered by the people who act like this musical is transphobic because it has a man in a dress. The musical makes no attempt to discount the legitimacy of being transgender, it is simply a story about a person who is comfortable with their gender identity pretending to be someone that they are not, and the best way to do that without people noticing is to pretend to be a woman. Just because they pretend to be a different gender does not mean that they are pretending to be transgender. The character is an actor, and an actor is someone who takes on an identity that they are not. It would be transphobic if the main character had a fake coming out as transgender and got the part because everyone felt bad for them because they thought the main character was delusional. It is not transphobic to have someone who is one gender pretend to be someone of a different gender. It’s called acting. Grow up.
Totally agree with you. I think people ( who seem to be very young and be influenced by someone who is trying to make Tootsie lower somehow??) who continue to post negative comments on SNS have not actually seen the show. I have seen the show several times because I loved all the talented actors and great ensemble and it is a clever, adorable comedy musical.
Patricia Elizabeth I Agree this Show was Really Good I saw it Yesterday and it was Phenomenal out of the 41 Shows I saw overall this was one of the Great Ones
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the reference to Julie Taymor? She directed the highest-grossing musical of all-time and went down in history as the first woman ever to win the Tony for Best Direction of a Musical.
First he married this chick named Cinderella, then his folks cut him off and he ended up barkeeping in West Covina, California. After going through a crazy relationship he went to college and became a desperate actor.
I wish I could see it but unfortunately it's not so easy to travel to the USA just to see a broadway musical :/ Wish people in foreign countries could watch it easily like in a paid live stream or so.
I have! I was extremely impressed! Totally worth seeing. You will have a great time. They also did a great job with the story. Go see it if you can! :)

mallaidh devlin how is it making fun of non-conformity? The main character is an actor! Why is it that it is suddenly making fun of someone of a different identity to pretend to be someone that you aren’t? That’s the entire point of the show! Am I to believe that it would be offensive if the main character were to portray a person with a particular type of personality because it might offend someone with that personality type? The main character is pretending to be a woman. They do this because they are selfish, and it ultimately blows up in their face. They at no point have a fake coming out, they at no point discount the legitimacy of people who are transgender, and they even make an effort to depict how upset everyone is with the main character for doing something like that.

This musical was atrocious. Wasn't funny, songs weren't catchy... and it's billed as a comedy musical. The trailer here is very misleading to what the actual show is like. And that's all besides the dated, sexist plot points and themes. Worst show I've seen so far.
I can't speak for the movie, but the musical isn't intentionally transphobic. The main character (Michael) fabricates an alter-ego to audition for a female role because he's desperate for work. He begins to develop an attachment to this character ("Dorothy Michaels") as she becomes an outlet for his feminine side. He feels as though he can only be feminine as "Dorothy" (ex: Michael's sassy sense of humor is irritating, but "Dorothy" is seen as brave and respectable). This ties into gender standards and stereotypes rather than gender dysphoria. The show points out how we still have prejudices for or against people because of their gender, and unfairly label traits as masculine and feminine. "Dorothy" is really just Michael without the pressure of these labeled traits. Shakespeare's Twelfth Night covers the same issue. After a shipwreck, a woman named Viola dresses as a man named Cesario to get a job. Pretending to be Cesario doesn't make Viola trans. She's just a masculine woman, and she needed the money. I hope that helped explain the situation a bit better.
Serenity S thank you. A lot of people saw “MAN IN DRESS ZOMG USE FLAMES TO BURN” and sharpened their pitchforks, without looking into or even listening to this musical.

@JTW I just looked up the stats for the show and it's tracking at around 75% capacity which is not great. That's a lot of empty seats.
