As someone who’ve played Ryu on and off throughout the series, one thing people don’t really talk about is how simple he is to play compared to previous versions. I could never really focus cancel in 4 so I could never play him at a high level, and in 5, it just felt like he didn’t have the tools to hit as hard as other characters. Now he can dish out damage and all it takes is a 2 button combo repeating with drive rushes in between.
Ryu is good and finally has something unique compared to Akuma and Ken that he does, but in reality he still doesn't compete with the top tiers. Ken still has way better mixups and pressure with his Jinrai, better meterless damage, better corner carry, just all around more utility and strong vortex which are amazing to have especially in an aggressive game. Ken basically gets to play the old Akuma gameplan of get them in a bad situation and keep them there with repeated mixups on their wakeup. One of the best offensive gameplans in the game. Ryu isn't the best at defense either, Akuma has him beat by far. Akuma has way better fireballs with variable timing with charge which makes them near impossible to consistently perfect parry, way better jump ins that can get him more plus frames than Ryu to get a mix off of, let him escape the corner or reversal the situation at any time, etc. Then he dominated Ryu in neutral too with way better movement to land his hits, and bigger/better normals to make landing hits even easier. So Akuma is just going to have stronger options in every game state, and can play a much more effective safe fireball and poke style of neutral/footsies than Ryu can. So what does Ryu have? Looping plus frames, great meter pressure, and theoretically the best damage. The problem is that these things aren't enough. Burnout sucks but it isn't like he magically becomes super scary just because he burned the opponent out, his plus frames are great sure but he basically gets 1 strike throw mix or loops for meter pressure and that's it. Yes his damage is theoretically the highest of the shotos at its peak, but when he requires and install to get that damage boost while other characters have better meterless damage and can land their hits to get that damage much more easily, the better theoretical numbers become worse in practice because he won't land them nearly as often. As a rough comparison: 5 damage x 4 times, is better than 8 damage twice. Ryu also has a major weakness that the other two don't: he is very simple in comparison. He doesn't have skill checks, gimmicks, movement tricks, nothing that he can really test the opponent with to steamroll them or cheese a win when he needs to. He has to win through pure fundamentals and getting his install momentum going, but he doesn't even have as good of fundamental tools as the other shotos, none as good as Akuma and the ones he has over Ken are the least important. There is a reason we saw 0 Ryus at Evo. All of them were gone by top 96 because he has to outplay people consistently in a way that just isn't consistently doable unless you are just fundamentally better than the opponent enough to compensate for skill checks and gimmicks they have while having none yourself and still get an advantage. That just isn't going to happen often at high level to get that far, the best players in the world who could outplay everyone like Punk, the birds, Tokido, etc, are smart enough not to waste their time with Ryu. Ryu still needs some more buffs to be able to hang with the top tiers. Whether it be a new move, or buffing his current arsenal to fix some of his issues, he still needs more. One great buff would be to his movement. His normals are nothing special but his walk speed is only average when he has no good burst options, and his dash is one of the worst for absolutely no reason.
That Manon Player DopeBoyFresh. I wonder if he got nervous knowing it was @JJWongg. He seems like he was a better player than what we saw in this match. then again, Justin is ridiculous.
I think there are some Ryu's moves that people don't take all the advantage from them... Like the axe kick, it is much more useful than it seems. It stops a lot of attacks 🤭

The Hyakkishu (aka Demon Flip) is not a Satsui no Hadou technique. Gouken has it. Maybe they should give Ryu that throw that was removed from Akuma's Demon Flip option. Ryu has too few moves compared to Ken, Akuma and even Luke.
Ryu got big buff but too late Ken still top5 in S2, pros who used Ken do not need to change the character they used to Pros who want to drop Luke(T2 character in S2) have another option, Akuma Akuma is much more suitable for agressive play style of SF6
I think he has moved up, but I don’t think he has made top 5. Right now at a solid A tier though 😊 Gonna take that stack at 2:34 😅 CMP > SHP > HPS > DI So sick 😊
I always liked Ken’s fighting style over Ryu but with him hitting like a tank is peaking my interest. Ken has prettier combos but Ryu combos just look vicious.
"Lock" is a state that is triggered to prevent true unblockable situations. The best example of it is when your opponent is in burnout and you try to hit a normal that acts as a true blockstring into Drive Impact for the stun. The Drive Impact will still make contact, but it will only blow the opponent back into a stagger (like it does when it's blocked) instead of scoring the stun. This happens because the developers wanted to ensure that there was always a gap and an opportunity to escape if Drive Impact is being used.
He got hit with the impact while still in hitstun, you'll see that it says "lock" on the right. It means you impacted your opponent while they in hitstun. Happens more often in burnout because it adds +4 when hit or block to attaxks
Ryu is the most fun character in the game IMO, but I think he misses some spice like Ken. I think giving his Tatsumaki being somewhat like Ken's would be cool

11:30 how didn't that DI stun the ken? is it cause the DI was performed mid combo before burn out was established?
Drive rush st.HP into DI was a true blockstring, so DI couldn't stun.
