This song has many connections to my life ... my earliest memories of this song was watching Jerry Lewis sing it every year at the end of his Labor Day Telethon ... imagine my joy when I found out that the corps with which I fell in love while watching the 1980 DCI Championships on PBS had this as their corps song ... later, I would find that my favorite Premier League side, Liverpool FC, uses this as their anthem (I chose Liverpool because I am and have ALWAYS been a Beatles fanatic) ...
While I never had the privilege of marching as a Scout, I have used this song to revive my spirit when things were low, especially as I have watched my goddaughter battle osteosarcoma for the past eight years ... because of the message of this beautiful song (and because of the brotherhood to which it alludes, as Chris Komnick explains in this video), I convinced the band director of the Lejeune HS Marching Band (at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune NC) to adopt this as the band's song in when I was assisting with drill & visual for them in 2002 to 2004, because those kids are just as unique as the Madison Scouts -- nobody else in the world uses the "DevilPup" as a mascot (derived from being the offspring of Marines who call themselves Devil Dogs, dating back to the fierce fighting at Belleau Wood in France in World War I) ...
Every time I hear the Scouts hornline play this (especially the recorded version from, I believe, 1978) or hear it sung, I envy the brotherhood of the Scouts, but I also know that I have my brothers from the Marine Corps, and our bond is as strong as the Scouts ...
One last thing ... to my drum corps brudda Animal, who marched with Madison in 1975, and with whom I marched senior corps in 1982 to 1984 -- I hope you understand when I say to you May You Never Walk Alone -- some may think I have no place to say that to him, but Madison remained TRUE drum corps longer than any other unit in DCI, and that honors the TRADITION at the foundation of the Madison Scouts.
Thank you for indulging me. /s/ USMC (Retired)

I'd love to see that 1955 show! They started off all lined up on the goal line and stepped off on the opening note - all eyes welled up. My brother was in the color gaurd about '57, '58, '59. I don't remember the horns going up on "...sweet sounding song of the lark" in the movie or in the '50s version.
