Great breakdown Tyler - Thanks! Looking to grab one of these myself for both photo and video and it was extremely helpful to see some actual SAMPLE IMAGES + VIDEO. Way better than the other vids I've found. Lol the irony of the last 30 secs out of focus... Right after "I always lock off my static shots on my GH4...." ;)
Nice camera, and great 4 week review. I would like to see how good theS1's 4K is with the DUAL IS hand held camera movement vs the other FF mirrorless. Oh, and thanks for doing this video in 4K.
Good and fair review. I'm quite impressed with the video quality you've done with the GH4. Looks great. Though, I think comparing the S1 and GH4 is an interesting one. Sort of "How far has Panasonic come?" DFD improves dramatically the lower the resolution or more processing you throw at it. Beating Phase Detect quite convincingly. If you shoot at HD or 4K at 60fps, the focusing is impressive. It's hard to find fault with it. I've been very happy with Panasonic cameras since my introduction with them with the LX3. A fantastic pocket cam. So I find the "hot garbage" comment to be a little strange. I've used a Panasonic Lumix GX8 for fashion with exceptional results and recently with a Lumix G9 that's even better than that. I started with Canon and think Panasonic's color science is just as good if not better. Even with a m43 sensor. Keep up the good work!

The “hot garbage” comment was referring to my history with Panasonic because all of the cameras I’ve owned have been the video centric ones. I think I even mentioned the G9 being the exception to the rule. Thanks for the feedback and the compliments. The S1 is incredible and with each update in continues to make me so happy with my purchase. Shooting a wedding right now and the 1.2 autofocus is amazing. I have seen so many video reviews about the S1. This is the best. One question: can you use a smaller XQD for the Short-term shooting (RAWs and 4K60) and use a slow but large SD as Backup for the storage to last over a complete holiday?
Just subbed buddy. I have been looking at this camera for a long time and this is by far a really good video explaining everything. Currently i am using a G85 and i wanted to step up by going to GH5. I started filming wedding videos recently (been using sony cameras, and even with a speedbooster and the sigma 18-35 i couldnt get descent low light vs an 6300 which is a apsc sensor) Everything about this camera for me its awesome. I have been watching so many reviews vs the a7iii but i really hate using sony cameras just bcz of their awful menu and the lack of a lot of handy features. The only thing that is holding me back a the price of it, I seen the new lenses coming out of sigma, but all of them are 1.4 and above 800 bucks, and of course I will need atleast 2 primes to get the work done. I havent seen a noise test with the super35mm crop of the camera vs normal ff use. That way for video i will be able to get a 24 and a 50mm to get a 24 36 50 and 75mm out of 2 lense
Would really be interested to see the „flat“ profile in 4k60...as you dont have 10 bit there i doubt v-log would work well....at least didnt on the gh5...
NIce review! When I compared the s1 with the natural color profile, to the g7 with the natural color profile, I found that the g7 was a lot more saturated, and have a brighter and more pleasing skin tone, so what do you think?
I think that’s a good assessment! One of the biggest shifts I saw was moving from GH2 to GH4. The natural profiles are slightly different on all the cameras. GH2 still has some of the nicest skin tones in natural profile.
@@TylerRostedt I think the interesting things that people say is that the gh2 has crappy skintones, the gh4 was ok, and the s1 has the best skintone so far. So I guess we just have a unique eye for colors? Next time going back to the camera store, I'm going to test out the standard profile with the contrast turned down, because when I see the comparison videos online, the standard seems to give a better result.
I recognize the scene with the dogs at about 0:14 as being in Utah County, Utah. Mount Timpanogos is straight ahead in the background, and Squaw Peak is on the right.
I considered reviewing the new firmware but I think between Gerald undone, Richard Wong, and others. It’s been covered. I will most likely make something once I get my V-log update later. Maybe a 6 month review? I’ve got a few other videos in the pipeline first but I will do something on the firmware updates in the future.

Be you and dont worry about using little things for other creators. And btw. Patato jet uses a super wide lens...so Your not that much like him. Think like you are already big. Act like Patato jet is copying you...not the other way around. Would love to see what lenses the S1 comes out with. My A Cam is a 6d mk ii and B cam is The Xt-3 and I am addicted to fast primes, Thought about panasonic....but I am not good at colorgrading.
color grading. Just realized you knew my name! Haha. Either way, the funny parts are the little things you took time on like inserting the small clips. Most people dont realize how much time goes into that....I do and it kept attention. Good thing to do as well is start with something juicy in the first minute and come back to it later, youtubes new algarithm only cares about a few things. 1 what percent watch through the first minute, 2. Engagement levels(comments, like to dislike) and 3 what those numbers look like in the first hour of upload. You did the number one golden rule which is respond to as many comments as possible. Once you do, people are likely to watch every video because they "Know the guy on tv" and it feels personal. Once you build up a loyal audience....they kill your first hour numbers and then you get recommended(heavily). Other then that...you cant teach personality, you got that
Aaash...have to say....really want to get a true hybrid body myself, but the s1 just loses in AF and Filming. After being spoiled by the x-t3 that i had for a while (superb eye-AF and 10bit F-LOG in ALL FRAMERATES!!!) i cant go back to this bs that panasonic pulled on th s1. (8bit and no manual exposure in slomo). Really dislike, that theyre acting like canon now.... :( ...the s1h is overpriced abd too bulky for the sake of just getting 10bit in all fps - after fuji did it last year with the 1400€ X-T3...if it just had IBIS... ;)
Never got the point of a talking head with camera reviews. Show me what the cameras can do visually. And share a link to a bunch of words I can read instead.
Thanks for your comment! That’s the great thing about the internet is that there is stuff out there for everyone! I personally love watching talking head cameras reviews. One of the aspects of my job is sitting at a computer and researching different camera equipment. So I will often sit with RUclips videos playing on my second monitor, of people talking about different cameras and their experiences with them. Especially new cameras that not a lot of people are talking about (at the time of me posting this). I always want to transcribe my videos to blog posts because I know some people really like them. I just don’t have the time right now while in school. 👍🏻

There have been significant af and all round responsiveness improvements made to the camera with firmware 1.2. Will you be re reviewing ??
