I don't think you realize this is 20 years ago. It is about the relations between Koreans and Japanese. As a westerner who got spit on in the late 2000s and early 2010s for dating a Korean, racial purity was huge.... For a really old independent animation, it was huge. Sorry. Don't mean to come off strong. This was a huge animation when it came out. For me, being a foreigner in Korea and dealing with that stuff, it was big. Google "The Shocking Truth about Foreigners" if you even want to see how they viewed intercultural relationships in like 2011 or 12
Oh my god, I freaking love this series; it always makes me teary-eyed towards the end! Especially when you realise the way Nabi 'rescues' Doki from the airport matches up with Doki's fantasies when they first met. Sometimes dreams do come true.
One of the things I love so much about this series is that it doesn't paint the pro-relationship people as good and the anti-relationship people as evil. Instead, it paints the politicization of inter-species relationships as a whole as bad, and the relationships themselves as good. The people fighting "for" inter-species love are so swept up in the whole thing that they lose sight of the actual people they're supposed to be fighting for. When the people raise the sign of Nabi as a "hero", they completely lose sight of the fact that he's just a person who wants to be with the woman he loves. He's no "hero", he's just a person doing his best who's capable of success and failure (as evidenced by him making the massive mistake of leaving Doki during that scene). The people who are supposedly supposed to be HELPING Doki and Nabi end up hurting them even worse by escalating conflict and putting them on pedestals when all they want is to live their lives. I just think that's a really interesting and poignant take on the issue that I haven't seen before. It would've been so easy to say "supporters good, detractors bad", but really it's far more nuanced than that. It's good to support an issue, but when you lose sight of *why* you're fighting you become an enemy all the same.
You say that at the end and I'm sure the creator was just making a joke, but I've heard PETA going after animations, games and believe I once heard them going after a book. So a note like that could, unfortunately, be needed even in an animation. So you know all the characters have names and even backstories. Unfortunately you'd need to go to the creators site and I don't even know if that is still up. It was all rather informative though. Like the friends you meet in the second episode. The tall slender cat woman is either the CEO of a record label or just a manager from one. In either case the dark female cat with the thick lips and the large Rabbit with piercings are part of a band she handles. The heavy set cat with one eye is her bodyguard and possible more. The Rabbit going after her I don't believe has much of story beyond loving the Tall female cat. The ruffian rabbits are a small biker gang who live near Doki. Their leader loves Doki and is jealous then actually against mixed race love. Eyepatch mind you is infatuated with the Dark cat with the lips and all of them are big fans of the band. Oh Doki well know for looking after animals, as you might have guest, and will take in any stray she finds. That includes the Rhino, Penguin and so on. Oh and you didn't seem to notice this, but there was a parody of this series in one of the Ponies the Anthology. It was based on the third step and featured Time Turner with Derpy.
I seem to remember PETA being pissy about Watership Down at some point. No idea what, if anything, ever came of it, or if my memory is just playing tricks on me.
This series of videos personally reminds me of the prejudice against same sex relationships, so I feel Ike it's still valid today. Also, did you notice as things were getting worse, the colors in Doki's cheeks and Nabi's scarf faded? Details like that amaze me.
It's not exactly homosexual relationships prejudice but interracial relationships that are still present in Asia because of being an unpopular and also a taboo topic amongst the conservatives, mainly in Korea where this series came from. But the concept might take similarities overall.

It's basically person from group A isn't allowed to be in a relationship with anyone from group B, separated by anything like gender, skin colour, religion, country of origin etc etc cause the bigots in society say so. And two people from either group trying to form a relationship in spite of this.

An example of this topic can be at Rocko's Modern Life with Hutchinson Widow who is not exactly a widow, but a female cat who hates/loves her husband who is a male turtle that is alive. The same thing that is causing troubles between Filb and Paula who are a turtle and a cat in the mean of a interspecies(interracial) relationship. But hey. The original message made by the team in the series is: "Every love must be accepted and there's always a chance." So the message can mean all for anyone. C:

Apparently from what i've gathered, this is a very personal story to the creator. It does show. It may seem a bit hyperbolic, but when it is made to represent the inner thoughts of someone going through this, it makes sense.
There is very good use made of colour throughput the series; particularly in the 3rd step when the colour slowly fades from Nabi (and then Doki) as they lose hope -- and then comes back when Nabi realises that he /can/ change things after all. In addition, in Step 4 intro, the music is "Greensleeves" - not only mentioning Green, but also the original song has very relevant lyrics. It is worth noting that, in Korean society, tying a green ribbon to a tree is something you to to make a wish, so green ribbons have additional symbology not immediately apparent to Western audiences.
Also note that right after she ties the ribbon to the tree, she smiles and waves at her friend who just died. It's her saying goodbye to someone who gave his life to protect hers.

I understand your initial confusion. SamBakZa is three-person animation team, and Amalloc is one of those three people. Honestly, I'm a bit surprised that you hadn't heard of _There She Is_ before now. The final step is already 10 years old at this point. And step 1 came out all the way back in 2004 (although some of the visuals have been enhanced since I watched the series last).
Oh, wow! This takes me back! I remember waiting for hours on my home's super slow dial-up for just one part to finish loading, each time there was a new one, but it was worth it every time. Saw the first one at school with their, at the time, fast internet, and was hooked. Had to watch them all as soon as they came out. I just loved this ongoing storyline, and the conclusion was great!
Ok to add some context to the non verbal stuff. There's a lot of stuff that you can't understand without listening to the songs with translation or not being able to read the moments well. The biggest one is of course the rule stated that Cross-species relationships is Taboo something you should Never do. Similar to how it was in most countries a long time ago in real life. Beyond here are things about the characters. Nabi the bunny Takes care of wild animals that she finds and gives them a green ribbon identify them but if they die she puts there ribbon onto that tree as a memorial. She bought those tickets to paradise because she believed it would be best to leave her family and friends behind to live happily with Doki without suffering from scrutiny and prejudice. Doki the cat had that moment of Nabi being beaten playing in his mind because he believed if they stayed together she might get beaten to death by the public. The Fuzzy Bunny group are siblings and their parents were a rabbit and cat making them outcasts growing up so they had to protect each other. Nabi use to date the one fuzzy guy that didn't cover his face. The eyepatch guy fell in love one with a cat from step 2 which got him in to support cross-species relationships.
I watched these waaay back when they were put out individually on Newgrounds. Looks like they've added some extra scenes and effects to the Complete version.
