In 2001 I downloaded an early live version of Take Me Away that Lifehouse played somewhere. I know it was 2001 because I met the band at Q102 Jingle Ball pre-show in mid December 2001 and asked them to please play it because I'd heard the early live version (keep in mind the song wasn't officially out until 2002s Stanley Climbfall). If anyone can find the earliest 2001 performances of this song, please link it to me. I had the mp3 for years and always preferred it to the album version. Jason sings with such heart and there's some better guitar work and drumming in the '01 live version! I just need to find it again.

Its called an E-Bow. It vibrates the strings indefinitely and gives that violin-like sound. You can see him using it 1:10 and 1:58. Must not be able to put it down!
