Thank God !! no talking on a craft video...
I find the music only ones aggravating lol
Best "chipped paint" technique I have seen...thank you for this you are the 🐐
Wow!!... Thank you doc!!
You weathering techniques and video quality are of the highest standard. Thank you for this, I have never seen anything like this technique before.
Thanks as Always for the compliments and for noticing the video quality and editing improving...video is way different..I kinda miss the old days of being able to just stage a picture for the shot and then do the actual technique with no one watching ;)
I was just watch how to do this type of finish on full-sized boards for things like haunted houses. His picture in the thumbnail looked so good, I thought this was the same thing.. Took me a minute to realize it was for miniatures. Very nice job!!!!
Do you have a link? I'd love to see that video. Thanks!
The best wood chipped paint ever seen!
Wow!! Thank You Guttalaser!!
@@JeffReiten my pleasure man! i'm just digging all your videos man... I love to see a genius at work and how deep your "realistic texure simulation" is! I'm learning a ton of things!
@@Guttalaser That comment just made my day...Thank you!!.. and Awesome to hear that your picking up a few tips and tricks!!
I've never seen this before ! How genious. The paint is acually chipped and curled off the material, like in real life... Do you think this could be used somehow to create a crackled paint?... hmmmm
AMAZING, i am using this technique on a wall i want to shiplap. granted it will take a lot of time but this is the best weathered technique ever.
Hey Cathy!! -Awesome!! Sounds like a fun Project
@@JeffReiten i have a huge shiplap wall to do but your method after all my searching is far beyond the best. so thank you so much for sharing. going to get started very soon. can't wait. all other shiplap just looks the same but your method is beyond genius. alleviates the endless sanding.
@@cathyking8013 😯...Thank You !! So glad you stumbled across my video!! - I'm kind of Excited now too!!.....be really cool to hear how it goes or see a few pics.... zoomcomodels@gmail.com .if not no worries....and Thank You again for the kind Compliments.
Thank you for this technique! It worked out great for me. Your tutorial is fantastic!
Thanks Lantern Hollow! Your Very Welcome and so Glad to hear it worked out for You!!
Brilliant techniques Jeff.
The first shot with the razor blade was magic!
Hey Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone, Wow! Thank You!..almost didn't include those opening shots..now I'm Glad I did :)
Hey Nigel never knew you were into models and dioramas? I still do my bonsai too but through winter I'm a modeler for the ipms shows for ww1/ww2 you'll maybe remember my user name it's never changed for years haha! I've not spoke to you for yonks hows your tree's coming along? Last time I checked you were just training your Austrian pine if I remember right!
@@EMTBonsai It has been a long time! I'm still at it, RUclips has grown into almost a full time job. I'm a long time modeler, I love both bonsai and models!
@@TheBonsaiZone that's what I'm doing alot of just now is my modeling, I've just finished the new full interior Sherman m4A3 kit from RFM models just having fun weathering it up abit and chipping before starting a diorama! Hope your well and keeping safe!
Will be trying this !
Once again, “hat off” for sharing this exquisite craftsmanship
This will be superb to add to the windows 🤓👍🏼
Hey Niclas, Tank You!..Yeah should add another technique to use on the window scene
Great video I can't wait to try this technique.
Thanks Scaled!
Not in a million years I would have guessed this technique... I have to try it. And besides, your video quality is impressive.
Thank You @daniellabra4186 !!! Give it a try - let me know if you have any questions😃😁
So realistic looking; excellent video.

Love it!!! Great effect as usual from you!
Thanks Jon!! Appreciate it! ;)

Thank You polishirtsamurai!!😁
That's very realistic. Excellent.
Thanks Dale!!
Super idea 👍
Thanks Stephen!!
Another excellent tutorial Jeff! The scale detail is spot on. You must spent a lot of time experimenting. I can’t wait to try it myself.
Also the video quality storytelling keeps improving. Good work.
Thanks Terry!! Always Experimenting...Now if I could focus enough to get more of them in tutorial form--lol....Let me know how it goes!
Getting More comfortable with shooting in video...still way overshooting-lol..Thanks Again for the Compliments and the Support!!

Nice technique. Thanks.
Thanks Greg!
Amazing work, thanks for sharing
Thank you John..Glad You Enjoyed It!!
Superb 👍
Thanks CW Modeling!
Incredible! work!
Thanks David!!
This looks great, beautiful work. Two qeustions. 1) how long do u let the paint dry on the vaseline before putting on the wood stick? 2) how long do u leave the sticks on the paint for a good chip effect?
Hi Tassie Rotterdam, Thank You!..I let the paint dry for about an hour or 2 on the wax paper...the sticks I left on for maybe 30-45 minutes before removing
@@JeffReiten aha now i know why mine did not work lol. Thanks ill give it another try tmw! I put the stick on way to fast lol
Hi Jeff, another great example of your skills 😳. They remain a great inspiration. Could you please tell whether you let the varnish dry before laying strips in paint or you do it still wet? The product you spray with the brush in 2nd technique is also varnish?
Hey Luuk! Thank you!..I lay the wood pieces with the matte varnish still wet on the wax paper with the dry paint..Yep the spray is the same varnish just showing another way to do it-- then paint with odorless thinner or odorless thinner mixed with a little enamel paint to finish
Fantástico efecto. Gracias.
Thank You Amparo!!😊

@@amparoferrandomedina6633 Bueno, muchas gracias
Jeff, first time I've seen this video. I'm 3 years late, but this technique is new to me. Will this work with chalk paint or latex paint, also, or have you tried it?
Thank you!
Hey @cbow7961...😮😁..I have used this technique with quite a few types of paint..works for most of them...the chalk paint will definitely work well...not sure about the latex paint but I bet it will work...let me know how it goes
@JeffReiten Great! Thank you for getting back to me. Will do! I hope you have an awesome evening
Another perfect video. Fantastic concept! Questions: how was the original wood weathered and does the paint have any vasoline on the surface when you remove the wood from the wax paper? Thanks again for the tutorial.
Hey Sid, Than You !!.. The original wood was weathered using razorblade, wire brush, sand paper, water and acrylic paints for coloring..the paint does have a tiny bit of vaseline left but I found a wash of paint thinner and or paint thinner and enamel paints takes care of it
Jeff, this is the most realistic chippy, layered effect! Amazing👏😍 Looks like white paint was dry before placing wood on wax paper. Is that correct? Also, were you just adding a little water to paint alone or and can you explain the last step, the enamel/thinner and what that does? I have tried so many techniques and mediums to try to achieve that true organic look of antique, aged layers upon layers of paint and you did it with this! Thanks for sharing!
Hey fabNforgotten!! 😮😁 Thank You!! - You are Correct..I let the paint dry on the waxpaper before applying the flat finish clear acrylic paint to the wood which then act like the glue to pull the dried paint off the the waxpaper.....I added a little water to the light blue paint just so it would "bead up" and create a kinda chipped paint effect ..then repeated the flat finish on wood to act as glue..this time I flicked the paint on the wood....For the final effect after all the layering of Acrylic paint I then thinned some enamel paint with thinner for a final wash effect to bring out detail and kind of pull everything together..I use the enamel paint and thinner so it wont effect the acrylic paint...let me know if you have anymore questions...Good Luck and Thanks Again for the Kind Compliments!!!!
@JeffReiten ok great! Ty for taking the time to read/reply to my comment... I appreciate the detailed instructions😊
Can't argue with your results... the effect looks stunning! But why the added step of the vaseline coat? Is it just to cut down on paint adhesion to the wax paper? If so, could the same effect be obtained by putting your acrylics directly onto parchment paper, which acrylic paint is much less likely to adhere to? Just wondering...I don't mind cutting corners where I can, as long as it doesn't effect the quality of the finished piece - I work slowly enough as it is.
Hey fotzilla, Thank You!!- Yep it just cut down on the acrylics adhering to the wax paper...I have tried it without the vaseline and it does still work but not as well...I haven't tested it with parchment paper yet-the best result come with using a flat piece of silicone mold material but most don't have that available..no vaseline needed with that
@@JeffReiten Thanks for the response... looks like I got some trial and error ahead of me... I absolutely LOVE that look you attained!
@@fotzilla3832 lol...let me know how the parchment paper works and Thanks Again for the Compliment!!
@@KrustentierBarbier I think I may have tried parchment paper when I was first testing this technique out myself with similar results😁The wax paper will definitely give you the results you're looking for!!..let me know how it goes or if you have any other questions and Thank You for such nice compliments!!
Wow! 😍
Absolutely brilliant! No BS, just a great tutorial. One question - what's the paint mix you've used in the beginning?
Hey Marian Cihon, Thank You!!.Appreciate it!...the first part is just regular white acrylic paint...nothing added
@@JeffReiten oook, thanks a lot. 😊
Awesome ! Is this real work? It's same as realistic aged painted material. It's great work and if possible, I'd like to do too.
Thank you for uploading such a nice video.
lol..Thank You panzer-meister!..Definitely Give it a try..a little messin around ends up with great results...Glad You Enjoyed it!
ok this looks great! the flaked paint efect its really natural! how do you can call this teachnique?🤔
Thanks sam's scale productions!! "flaked paint effect"...I like it!
I think the most suitable name would be the "Reiten Technique". Totally new and original.
@@kiwinesss ..lol Only if people end up liking it..Uh oh
Jeff Reiten great!!!! I liked the name "reiten technique" it sounds original and new! with your permission i will call it like that 😄😁
@@samsscaleproductions2514 Alrighty..sounds good to me
Already a lot of work for some tiny thin strips of wood, what about the big stuff??
Hello Jeff, this is a very nice technique, and thank you for sharing it with us! I have noticed at the beginning, that when you apply the matt varnish in the wood, it is not "absorbed" and it stays in the surface. What kind of wood are you using? I am trying to do the same thing with balsa 1mm thich without success!
Hey George, Thank You!!...I think most of what I use is Basswood very similar to balsa wood...Basically the "weathering" of the wood with the paint kinda ends up sealing it just enough to keep the flat finish from absorbing .....so I would just paint the wood with a few "washes" of paint water mix-if you dont want to color the wood just paint it with a flat finish wash let dry overnight...this should seal it up..Hope this helps and good luck!
Hi there , love ur work and been trying to get the same effect but struggling to get it to peel off . Do u wait till the varnish is dry? And do u need the wood to be moist or bone dry?
Hey samson! Thank You!...I wouldn't wet the wood - that will cause the varnish to spread and become diluted and then let the varnish dry (1 or 2 hours) before removing the wax paper..that should get you the results your looking for!
I'll try this thanks, I use my micro liquid mask for the chipping effects on heavy chipping then washes off or same as this with kitchen grease proof paper then paint it reminds me if getting the heat gun out and doing the glossing on skirting boards that's what gave me the idea of the liquid mask I only have acrylic water get from both AK and vallejo that's a clear liquid might work as don't have any matt clear medium if that's what was used?
I use the the matte clear acrylic paint just in case the paint doesn't stick in areas-matte won't stand out..gloss clear would stand out..you could probably even just use white/elmers glue with a touch of water in place of the clear matte paint
@@JeffReiten not come across clear paint yet
@@EMTBonsai I use this quite a bit www.amazon.com/Matte-Varnish-17ml-AK-Interactive/dp/B00GB9N7RM
@@JeffReiten ok thanks I'll grab it tomorrow! I'll need to make a new channel for my modeling I'm thinking of starting to do some videos myself but hate the camera haha
@@EMTBonsai HaHa..I hear yeah about the camera..takes some getting use too....let me know how the project and the channel goes!
Hi Jeff, i just saw this great technique of yours and i think is just amazing; I’ve worked with so many specialty products for antiquing finishes and never had al least a slightly close result to this!
I have a question: I assume the role for the varnish is to work a an adhering agent for the paint to stick, im i right? Is there any substitute for the varnish you could recommend?
Hey Daniel! Thanks1 I Appreciate the Compliments!!😊..Yep the role of the Varnish is to act as an adhesive.....The clear matte varnish seems to work the best but I have used matte medium (paint medium) the other thing I experimented with was using enamel or lacquer paints and then reactivating them with paint thinner..that had some pretty good results..hope this Helps and thank again!
Total Freeken Awesomeness...
Bravo!!!
Thank You Silent Traveler..Much Appreciated!!
Paint a thin layer of Vaseline ... ok ... easy enough ... BUT ON WHAT SIDE of the wax paper? 🤔
Hey mbr1060...Either side works....there is a shiny side on most waxpapers so I tend to use that😁
@@JeffReiten that would be the wax side. Thank you!
@@mbr1060 😄😁
Will this work on insulation foams?
Hey JC De Belen! I have never tried it on foam but I have used it on almost everything else - wood - resin - plaster - plastic so my guess would be that it will work on foam
Would technique work on other material other than wood?
Hey AgentSmith, I have tested it on styrene and plastic and it does work on both of those
Jeff Reiten good to know. Loving these videos. Just tried the salt one and it’s amazing how detailed it works. Keep these going 👍
