Lets try to understand how lighting works:
First thing we need to do is placing our light source in our composition. When the light hits an object from one direction, the shading is placed on the opposite side of that object. The shadow of an object will also be placed on the opposite side of its light source. There you go, lighting explained in a nutshell! Cross hatching is not a complicated technique either. It's just drawing sets of lines that are evenly spaced and in the same direction; then, changing the direction of the lines in each set in order to get a darker shading.
