    Inaccuracies:
    - Windows did not support sound drivers until Multimedia Extensions for Windows 3.0 (or if counting the 3.0 MME’s MDK Version 59);
    - Windows NT 3.1 - NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 aren't just available in Server editions alone, there are also Workstation and Professional editions which aren't targeted at servers;
    - The Windows NT 5.0 image you used is from Pre-Beta builds but you used the startup sound from Beta 1 - Beta 2, and Windows 2000 Beta 3 build 1946-1969 startup sound as NT 5.0 shutdown sound;
    - Windows Neptune Server? Neptune was scheduled to be a home consumer-oriented version of Windows built on Windows NT code, not a server version*;
    - The Windows 2000 sounds you used is actually from builds 1983-2000;
    - Whistler sounds you used are fake. Windows 2000 sounds are used until build 2485 (2481 introduced the RTM sounds but was used by default since build 2485);
    - Christmas and Royale Remixed themes aren't part of Microsoft Plus! for Windows XP;
    - There's not even a UK-specific version of Windows Server 2003. The alleged sound came from a promotional animation cut by TheCanadianToast. No country-specific edition of Windows was ever made until Microsoft was forced to make N and KN variants for Europe and South Korea respectively which removes Windows Media Player and other features due to antitrust legislation; Windows localization wasn't available in English (United Kingdom) [en-GB] until Windows 8 and Server 2012.** All versions and localizations of Windows Server 2003 use the Windows XP startup sound;
    - Longhorn sounds you used are fake. The Windows XP startup sound is used until build 5840.16389, where the Vista RTM sounds were introduced. Builds 5469-5471, 5477-5487, 5536-5840.16384 used the RTM logoff sound as the shutdown sound (the other beta builds use the XP shutdown sound);
    - Windows XP logo in Windows 7?
    - The Windows 7 theme sounds shown are actually logon and logoff sounds, not startup and shutdown sounds;
    - Windows 8 - 10 (including their server counterparts) uses the same startup sound as Vista/7 but is disabled by default. Windows Vista/7 shutdown sound remains in %SystemRoot%\Media but unused;
    - The sound you used for Windows 10X startup is from the OOBE intro, not the startup sound. The shutdown sound you used is also the reversed of the aforementioned sound;
    - Windows 11 have no shutdown sound (Windows Vista/7 shutdown sound remains in %SystemRoot%\Media but unused);
    - Windows Server 2022 is based on the Iron codebase and uses the Windows 10 user interface, so it uses the same startup sound as Vista/7/8/8.1);
    - [MIX] Neptune, 2000, ME, Whistler, XP, Longhorn, Vista, Server 2008, 7, Server 2012, 8, 8.1, 10, Server 2016, Server 2019, and 10X images are fake; the image you used before Windows Server 2022 is actually in Windows 11 initial release.
    * There are Neptune Server references in a few setup files. Plus the "Configure My Server" wizard is from Windows 2000 Server.
    ** Prior to Windows 8, you can get input methods or regional format but not a separate localisation for en-GB (which differ in spellings like "color" vs "colour" for example).
    33 mistakes. You're self-proclaiming to be an expert but still not improving on content. Your research about Windows is extremely superficial. You're only suitable for Windows Never Released or any custom stuff. Can't you learn from people like Billy O'Reilly and/or use BetaWiki or even Wikipedia more?

    • Windows Whistler earlier betas used the Windows 2000/ME sounds, the later builds have used most of the Windows XP sounds we know to this day.
    • Windows Server 2003 has only used Windows XP sounds, its startup sound is just like XPs.

    Honestly, the standard startup sounds of the main operating systems from 95 to XP (95, NT 4, 98, 2000/ME, XP) are pretty fantastic. The Brian Eno-composed Win95 sound is timeless and iconic - simple and reflective, announcing with grace the arrival of the biggest leap forward Windows ever had in 95. 98's meanwhile is this bright, beaming rush of sound, full of optimism. Both honestly beautiful in their own, very different ways. 2000/ME and XP's are along similar lines with one another, that sort of flowing piano-driven elegance; both great, and I'm very nostalgic for XP's sound given it was the operating system of my childhood. NT 4.0's is... very odd, given the rest of these. Spacey, dark, futuristic synth tones are not what I expect from a Windows startup but it has those, and it's honestly the single coolest sound of this bunch.
    Most of their accompanying shutdown sounds (All of them except 95) are pretty fantastic too, for similar reasons - being a nice complementary 'goodbye' to their 'hello'. And on 95; the 'tada!' wav file did make for a quite cheerful and honestly goofy (in a good way) sound for 3.1 etc. but it never struck me as shutdown sound at all, and doesn't pair with Eno's startup sound all that well either.
    The Vista/7 sound... is kinda neat. It's pretty and all but I never cared for it as much as XP's or any of the other ones mentioned before. I definitely have some nostalgia for it (I have a lot of fond memories of 7) but it's clearly not as good. Also the shutdown sound is so faint you can barely notice it, though I do think it's cute. I think I actually prefer Longhorn's startup and shutdown sounds to the ones they went with here - they have similar vibes but are bolder.
    I skipped over 8 and went to 10, and honestly didn't even know they still had startup sounds past this point, as they're disabled normally. I'm actually not someone that hates modern corporate aesthetics wholesale but this is one area that they've clearly downgraded on over the years, honestly. I get it; these newer and more subdued sounds (or no sound at all) fit the aesthetics of the operating system and the whole vibe around modern technology far more than any of the pre-Vista sounds, but just on their own they're clearly not as interesting. The fact we went from Brian Eno-composed sounds to no sound at all being the default speaks to this downgrade, I think.

  • @машинисттепловоза

    you're not an expert if you don't even know what sounds different versions of Windows had. the first thing I noticed was that Windows 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 didn't have startup sounds (they basically didn't have sounds), because Microsoft invented the sound file together with IBM in 1991 and he had an extension ".wav" (Wave). the second thing I noticed is Windows Whistler. his sound appeared from nowhere and was made in Audition by someone unknown (the reversed sound of turning off Windows 98, the sound from the Microsoft game, and the reversed sound of turning off Windows 2000 were combined). the shutdown sound was stolen from BeOS (I don't remember exactly from where).
    The Whistler itself had sound from Windows XP/2000. the third thing I noticed was Windows Longhorn. Its startup/shutdown sound was taken from Samsung theme for Windows XP/Vista. Longhorn itself used sounds from Windows XP. well, that seems to be it.
    I forgot to notice, the Windows Server 2003 startup sound was taken from the Windows Server 2003 promo video (which turned out to be a huge sadness for me as a child). Windows 8, 8.1 had the Windows 7 startup sound, and the sound you showed was the "Windows Logon" sound. the sound of Windows 10, 2016, 2019 and 2022, as well as Windows 8, 8.1, had a Windows 7 startup sound (in Windows Server 2022, the startup sound also had to be configured itself).
