Hey, I get that durham is located within the Research triangle, but saying research triangle refers to the whole urban triangle made by Chapel Hill, Raleigh, and Durham. These other cities, and the ones inbetween (Cary, Apex etc.), are a fascinating case study of urbanism vs suburbanism, all connected by the fantastic greenway trails you rode on. I think you should come back and make a video on the triangle as a whole, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it!

It's amazing to me to see how many hundreds of millions of dollars have been allocated, spent, and then disappeared without any sign of an actual light rail train. In the Denver -Boulder area of Colorado, rail lines were voted on, planned for, funded and land was purchased. New light rail lines were built throughout the Denver-Metro area, but no light rail lines were built in the Boulder area. The land is purchased, so they can build the lines, but the money to complete the project pretty much disappeared. It was much needed and anticipated infrastructure too.

North Carolina and Durham native here. I grew up in the Bull City and have since returned from an extended period out of the state. This is my third year back and I am glad to see the city center being revitalized. I live a fairly easy bike ride from The Streets at Southpoint. I say this since most of the roads behind the mall do not have bike lanes. When I bike on these roads, I have to keep watch for cars. Most drivers will see you and wait their opportunity to pass.
My childhood home is an easy ride to the Tobacco Trail. The Woodcroft, Woodlake, Parkwood, Grandale, and other area neighborhoods have a good network of footpaths and multi-use paths snaking around them. Granted, I do have a car and wished I took my bicycle out more than the car. Where I live now, I can still ride to the Tobacco Trail, but it's easier to bring my bike on the car since the main road has no shoulder and a high speed limit. Fun fact: the "stroad" that is Fayetteville Street from Barbee past MLK Boulevard towards downtown was once a simple two-lane. I'd always get stuck trying to turn left at Barbee because everyone else was. The Tobacco Trail crosses that intersection at one signal, now it's two. Though most try to cut across to reduce crossing time.
The Tobacco Trail runs all the way through Cary and terminates west of Apex, linking to the greenway systems of those suburban metros.
A light rail system connecting Raleigh, Durham, Cary, RDU Airport, and nearby Chapel Hill is a no-brainer. I'm sad it got torpedoed. I wouldn't have to drive into downtown and park; just leave my car at the nearest park-n-ride and maybe bring my bike. It would also facilitate getting to RTP, Raleigh, and Cary for events. GO Durham once trialed a bus route near the entrance to my neighborhood, though the area is car-centric. The fact no buses run through here anymore testifies to that. Though, I love the network of footpaths that make walking, running, or biking a breeze.

I hung out at that place all day, I even had two different jobs there. As long as I didn't have all my homeless bag lady bags with me, nobody knew. It's interesting to see the same place from a completelly different perpsective of person and time.

By the way, Raleigh has a "Sip n' Stroll Downtown" social district for sometime now. The North Carolina General Assembly enacted a legislation in 2021, which allows municipalities to create such "social districts" where alcohol can be purchased from a business and taken outdoors.

As a daily bike commuter and also a recreational rail trail enthusiast, I'm actually curious if recreational bike trails increase mode share or if they reinforce drivers' attitudes that bikes belong places other than roads?
But I have no idea what sort of data you'd want to look at to try and answer that. If anyone does it would make a very interesting video.

Yeah, I like them, too, but as he hinted at it is kind of a shame that a right of way that could be used for mass transit has been converted into a token bit of bike infrastructure that more often than not doesn't really serve a functional purpose beyond recreation. I'm not from the area myself but why not build a tram along the American Tobacco Trail and put dense housing at The Streets at South Point? There's already a fair amount of housing density along the parallel Fayetteville Rd. Looking at, for example, NotJustBikes videos that show transit oriented development bringing massive tax revenue to cities make it clear that this is a good path forward.

I would love to see you visit Columbus, OH in your future travels. The urbanism of our downtown/short north is pretty convenient to get around. Our MLS soccer stadium, minor league baseball stadium, and hockey arena all sit next to each other with a district and high density housing surrounding it. Accessible by the Olentangy bike trail and the Crew provides bike valet parking on match days! Also becomes an open container DORA district where you can walk around with a drink purchased at a designated bar. Unfortunately lacking a light rail system despite a lot of push here to create one. Hopeful to at least get Amtrak in the future.

I'm not sure what legislation exists here in NC that is encouraging these drinking districts in downtown areas, but I live in Monroe, which is a half hour east of Charlotte and has a population of 38,000ish. Monroe created a social district for its downtown area a few years ago after several new bars, eating establishments and a regular calendar of social events made it more of a draw. The limits are on sidewalks... And, I know that there are a number of other smaller towns in NC that have done similar. Whatever legislation exists here, it must be an easy task to create them!

no one lives in "Downtown Durham" unless you can afford one of the new $1million apartments, everyone has to drive and park to "walk" around the three blocks, its a massive traffic jam whenever DPAC or Durham Bulls have a game, not to mention its 1000º and 100% humidity 6-7 months of the year. Its grown a lot over the last 30 years, crime and homeless are still major problems. The Mexican food is great, there's also a Micro Brewery for every person here if you're into that sort of thing. Overall its not worth the price or heat unless your attending college or working and commuting on to RTP on our favorite rush hour parking lot i-40 :(

Not sure if anyone else has already talked about the Tobacco Trail, but the crossing at Fayetteville road is the worst part of the trail. If you bike south from Southpoint the trail is much nicer IMO. There’s less crossing and it’s more wooded. It also becomes unpaved at some point, and is very well connected to the greenway systems of Cary and new suburban developments. Umstead State Park and connection between it, the NC Art Museum, and some greenways heading into Raleigh are also nice for biking wnd walking.

I like hearing a left coaster's impression of the middle East coast. I live in CA for 5 yrs. but never went North of San Francisco/Russian RIver. REGARDING Durham's LRT PROPOSAL... they got funding first, and then tried to locate a line to Chapel Hill to scrounge up even a nominal amount of riders. It meandered with 17 stops, and it would have taken 1.5 hours from end to end. You can drive to and from each city in 15-20 minutes any time of the day.----For any rail project's consideration (given the $ billions to build) , you must have 2 destinations that see thousands of riders going back and forth daily. Durham/CH couldn't ever sustain that when driving is so easy. ----But I love rail transit and support it when it will be favorable to driving. Even in Atlanta on MARTA, you can drive to many destinations as easily as the train. 2 million residents in 2 counties pay an extra 1.5% sales tax (8.9% total) to supplement MARTA's operational costs. That's $500+ a year from everyone not counting the $3 fare. It is needed for future mobility though.----Remember 50% or more of traffic on highways is freight, goods, food, clothing, amazon packages, etc. Road capacity must grow with populations to maintain our consumer-driven economy in the US. Roads and rail transit both are good.

Thank you so much for this video. I always enjoy what you have to say about cities. I wonder if you can do a video about how to debate the merits of urbanism and more efficient transportation. I recently had an argument with someone who was singing the praises of how efficient American style transportation is. He has spent sometime in Europe and says the American system is better. I have not been to Europe, so I have no personal experience. I believe that our car centric structure is extremely dangerous, and energy inefficient. I feel as though it is important to be able to articulate our points to the people who disagree with us.

The opening bar scene from the movie your referencing bull Durham was actually filmed in Mitch‘s Tavern in Raleigh, North Carolina. You really really need to go check out Raleigh because they’re doing some great things over there when it comes to urbanism. Hillsborough Street is a proper college Main Street, and there are even pedestrian malls. Well, for a fact, I know that Glenwood Avenue gets closed on weekend nights because there are so many people going to the bars there. I have video of me walking and I actually mentioned in the video telling you to go there. Just don’t go without me.

You know, Omaha, Nebraska has a good minor league scene, the Storm Chasers have one of the longest associations with a Major League team in the whole of the MLB, and Alliance sports, who also operates the minor league teams in Richmond and Montgomery. Also, we have a very good "minor league" soccer team, which we are building a whole ass stadium for downtown.
I run camera for all these people. I love my job, they're really fun to watch!
However, we are hampered by our current leadership; our mayor is known for leaving the city for 4 months at a time to go to Italy or St. Louis, (which, given the current consequences of Mean Jean's actions, what with the streetcar that seems to be perpetually 5 years away since 2014, I understand wanting to leave) and her mysteriously disappearing husband who died of a self inflicted gunshot wound, is more than a little frustrating. I both love it and hate it here, so please do a video on us.
Also, the West Papio Trail is awesome. We just need to actually connect it to the existing traffic infrastructure, Jean.
