100% off grid here in our tiny 16x24 log cabin and a seperate 12x24 kitchen/living room. Both are heated strictly with woodstoves. And a tip for those who buy the Class A stainless pipe but don't like the shiny look, I roughed mine up with steel wool and painted with hightemp black paint. Went off grid a year ago thanks to this channel. Best move we've ever done. Love to y'all
@@oldgrayhairs8246 no, I'm not lucky at all. Wife and I worked hard and made a ton of sacrifices to be where we're at. Anyone can do anything if they put their minds to it.
When my parents built their first new house (on-grid) in the 1980’s, they added a wood stove. Bricks were added behind it and it stood on a brick foundation. This gave the floor and walls protection and we had plenty of room to set aside wood to dry out when hauled in from outside.
If some of y’all are installing metal roofing behind your wood stove, may I suggest that you install it a few inches off the floor and a few inches from the ceiling. Also, install it so it’s off the original wall sheathing. Now the stove can heat the metal and produce an air flow using convection. The air behind the metal will rise, drawing more air in from the bottom and go out the top. The metal doesn’t have to go all the way to the ceiling, as long as it’s higher than the non insulated stove and pipe.
This method is what I used but I heat my dining room with the use of registers at floor and to 6 foot , as the metal warms cold air is pulled in at the bottom and warm air out the top . This is a through the wall system using the stove in the living room.

We got blessed, someone purchased ours, ordered everything ever needed for it (fan, blower, brick all interior double black pipe/exterior triple piping) and then decided to move to an apartment. Tips for the Buddy heaters! I have the smaller one and I needed to purchase a hose adapter to use the 20lb tank. Not expensive. They also recommend a filter and I found out you really do need that! I found one at Ace hardware but the Buddy online store has them and you can order it with the heater. I also bought a propane gauge to know when it was getting low. Also recommend you give it a long outdoor burn (a couple hours) before you use it inside. It burns off the exterior residue which is really noxious. I love mine and it works great! Texas Deb 😁❤️
@@dleben8597 yes. I followed the instructions to do a pre-burn outside, and I lit it in my tiny shed that evening but it still had the odor it produces to burn off the manufacturers' coating. That's why I recommend a couple hour initial outdoor burn, because after I did that the smell went away and I was able to use it indoors and I stayed nice and warm.

We had a chimney business until 2008. I (and @Doug) can not stress enough... 1. ALL through points have to have triple wall pipe. 2. Dont mix manufacturers products... they wont line up correctly. 3. Inside pipe flange goes down... not up. You leak creosote on the outside of pipe. 4. Learn to clean chimney and do it often. 5. Dont burn green or garbage or treated wood. 6. Have a dry chem pack handy to toss in stove if you get a flue fire. 7. DO NOT USE B Vent pipe for wood stoves.
With the Buddy Heater don't forget to install a Gas Filter. LP Gas is dirty and Will Clog the heater to the point where it won't work. The gas filters on Amazon cost about $11 or $12.
Thanks for showing us to install the wood stove…we live in Texas and after the power was shut off during the cold winter we decided that we were going to save up and try to buy a wood stove or an alternative heat/cooking source. For now we have a heater like yours. We have been trying to become more and more self sufficient as much as possible thanks to y’all showing us that it is possible to live like that! You guys are so awesome and I thank you for all y’all do!
We installed our wood stove about 10 years ago. It is a great peace of mind yo know that we will be able to have heat in any winter emergencies. Thank you for sharing!
One of the first things I added to my house was a woodstove, hands down the best investment for the money. I harvest wood from my property, furthering my commitment to offgrid living. I provide 90% of home heating for the year, living in upstate NY. I hope to add some solar to help remove reliance on electric grid. Merry Christmas Doug and Stacy, God bless you and your family. The chocolate tea is amazing!
Last summer we bought 2 indoor kerosene heaters, 2 Big Buddys, 2 small Buddys and fixed our fireplace. Next is trying to install a wood stove. This video was perfect for that! It may be overkill but what may be coming our way is not good... Thanks again for sharing!
Living on the peak of a mountain, the electricity goes out periodically. We installed our wood stove at the beginning of the winter season and have used it daily. Nothing like the coziness of wood heat. Now, no worries.
Thank you Doug and Stacy for all that you stand for. God Bless America May we stand for the truth with love but firmness. Someday I wish me and my family could live off grid. But we are unable to get away from the city. Yuck I'm a small town mountain girl. I miss my Montana!
We Love our wood stove, it has cut our power bill in half and really keeps it warm and cozy in our little cabin. We did a little side job in exchange for our stove, so the price was right!
Thanks as always for great information! I remember my Dad installed a wood stove that used the existing chimney for the stove exhaust back in the mid 80's. The stove was very efficient and heated the downstairs living room, dining room, kitchen and entrance nicely during the cold northern Illinois winters. Was not aware of the Buddy propane heaters, nice to know! Y'all stay warm and healthy as we all experience this cold snap across the country. We are grateful for the knowledge and wisdom you impart!
My grandmother had a wood cook stove. Used it to heat house, cook, and can. They can't be beat. Love your stove. Will have to look into what they cost.
I made a barrel stove for my home. Used it two years. Was an amazing stove and heated great. This year I took it out and am replacing it with a large Fisher stove I found on market place.
Thank you Doug for showing us that we do not to be intimanited to have this option. But also giving the tip for those of us who are stuck on grid! Utility company decided they need twice as much money from their customers! 🙄 I live in a single wide mobile home & would like to install a wood stove.
I want the cooking stove and the wood burning stove. I need to show my husband this video. Thank you beautiful! I love the feel of a fire. We have a big buddy, that’s our plan so far. Been collecting propane tanks.
Doug, I am in my 3rd month of the soapstone Hearthstone Heritage IV Hybrid with 25-hour catalytic burn radiant heat. Plan was for back-up, but love it so much and gas prices up, so full-time and use ashes for chicken dust bath and garden! It doesn't heat all 1800 sq ft, but bedrooms are better cooler anyway!

We installed our wood stove 3 years ago. We love it.
Wood heat is so nice! It heats you deeply, not just on the surface. Love it!
Good job Doug. The current that you are trying to avoid with the chimney being to low to the roof is called eddy current.
Just like in the river ✌️
I've missed you Gary! You're a true friend!
I've been using wood heat since 1979. I hate moving, love the warmth of wood.
Hi simkim how are you doing today
Big Buddy will also need a hose connector for the large tank. You're welcome.
So Glad y'all installed a wood stove! They are awesome! I miss wood heat so much. My folks had it, but currently we don't.
Last summer we bought 2 indoor kerosene heaters, 2 Big Buddys, 2 small Buddys and fixed our fireplace. Next is trying to install a wood stove. This video was perfect for that! It may be overkill but what may be coming our way is not good... Thanks again for sharing!
Yeppers that is how we did it at the Son's place !!! Did it myself that one time all by myself!!!
I just helped my friend install a Harmon 3 coal stove along with the pipe going out the way.
The insulated pipe of course
Living on the peak of a mountain, the electricity goes out periodically. We installed our wood stove at the beginning of the winter season and have used it daily. Nothing like the coziness of wood heat. Now, no worries.
That is so great the new stove is beautiful and there is nothing like knowing you can be warm no matter what thank you
Thank you Doug and Stacy for all that you stand for.
God Bless America
May we stand for the truth with love but firmness.
Someday I wish me and my family could live off grid.
But we are unable to get away from the city. Yuck
I'm a small town mountain girl.
I miss my Montana!
I'm glad that you were able to talk about this.
We Love our wood stove, it has cut our power bill in half and really keeps it warm and cozy in our little cabin. We did a little side job in exchange for our stove, so the price was right!
Hello Stacy & Doug you both are truly a blessing .
Thank you very much for sharing every video 🙏
Once again and again and again: THANK YOU, DOUG!!! ❣️❣️
This year we just installed the same wood stove you have in this video. You picked a good one. Will keep you warm.
Live on grid in a newer subdivision but have had a wood stove installed a decade ago and never paid a heating bill since!!!
WOOD HEAT IS THE BEST!
My grandmother had a wood cook stove. Used it to heat house, cook, and can. They can't be beat. Love your stove. Will have to look into what they cost.
I need to step up my plans…thank You Doug and Stacey for the info through the years.
I like how you show people how to do things the simple way.
You make things look so easy. Thanks Doug and Stacy
Wood heat is the best heat! Nothing compares!
Nothing like sitting toasty warm by a fireplace! Would love to have one installed in my home! Thanks for sharing this installation! Blessings!!!😃
