Having just finished the show, all I can say is WOW. Wondrous and utterly alien, with incredible world design, amazing characters and just one alien threat after another. I’ll never look at zebra-frog-pandas the same way.
Most of the backgrounds and many character shots are done in flat shaded 3D, its just so good its almost impossible to tell! The style is never compromised by the CG because its so seamlessly blended into the 2D.
If you like the way this looks, check out the art and comics work of Moebius (Jean Giraud). This animation is obviously very inspired by his work. I’d recommend “The Incal” or the Heavy Metal magazine published story, “Arzach”.
it also helps that some of the key artists that worked on this prefer very volume-accurate styles; check out Djob Nkondo's solo stuff, for example! the 3D character animation seems to be limited to long shots, handled similarly to current anime productions' practices. very well blended indeed!

It's a must watch: not only is Scavengers Reign incredibly well animated, the story is truly just as good. One of the most original shows you can watch, it's completely alien and just pulls you into its beautiful world. Some of the concepts brought up in this season are so novel like the Hollow, it's a breath of fresh air. Can't recommend it enough. Really looking forward to a sequel and the OST.
It's like Moebius meets Miyazaki and Alex Garland put it together. Love this show and how it slowly creeps from fascinating to unsettling to outright terrifying. *Best thing in quite some time!*
9/10 easily, just got done watching it, feels a lot like the movie annihilation, but as its 12 episodes long, it gets a lot of time to create intrigue, the horror aspects are so well done, especially the main villain and how well they flesh out the world, would recommend this show to anyone
Guys, I watched it completely. I think this is one of the best sci-fi series of the last decade, if not the best. Three stories are very subtly woven here, each with its own plot, its own difficult moral choice. Azi's homesickness and her attempt to adapt the environment to suit herself. The survivalism of the Cap and The Biologist, their confusion with the world, but Sam’s struggle for his sanity, for the common good. And, simply, the tearing Nietzschean self-destruction of Kamen, who feeds his Abyss with his demons in the literal sense of the word. The visuals are so harmoniously intertwined with the plot that even Jean Giraud with “Time Masters” could not have done better. The picture is so complete, so clear, as much as we lacked it in “Raised by Wolves.” There is Ursula’s silent existential question as she watches the birth and death of a baby in the forest, androids dreaming of electric sheep, the choice of young scavenger Charlie (sic, scavengers in a world of scavengers!) and a ruthless antagonist who dies in the throes of an absolutely alien and incomprehensible world for the human logic. The name of the ship, "Demeter", is also very characteristic. It’s as if the same vampires of the human race who want to remake everything for the human kingdom were brought into this untouched biome. Everything is very logically intertwined, unlike Ridley, but without Miyazaki’s pink-sunset happy endings, which puts “Reign” for me on the level of Strugatski “Snail on the Slope” in the Kir Bulychov “The Settlement” setting. My score is 12 out of 10. When you finish watching, you will feel as if you were taken out of a dream ball into the real world in the same old short animation on which the series is based.
Holy mother of God this looks so good. The animation is gorgeous. The imaginative world looks incredible. The story sounds amazingly well thought out. The characters look interesting. Far too often even when worlds look alien, they still follow our rules, rules we understand. It sounds like this world is going to break that mold a bit. Just 2 more days.
I legitimately thing this is on tier with The Expanse as far as scifi shows that execute on their concept perfectly. In my top 10 scifi media forevermore.
Looks like Mobius. Also, should we survive long enough to get to the stars, it's good to have stories in there of how planets with life, belong to that life.
This is my favorite animated series of 2023. The bizarre beauty of this world just grabbed me by chokehold and now I'm obsessed with the animals and plants. I'm even making up my own names for them. I call 0:45 frogbulls as a play on bullfrog as they look like a bull that has frog features (just watch the show to understand what I mean LOL).
Poignant, gruesome and beautiful. Everything from the art, animation, world building, characters and themes are masterfully done. 10/10. Loved every second of it.
Subnautica (and games like that) lacks one fundamental element that makes stories like this special - characters. Game developers prefer to take the easy way out - no need to write compelling dialogue, create interactive reactive NPC AI, spend money on voice overs etc.
Jean Giraud, also known as Moebius, is renowned for his distinctive artistic style characterized by intricate linework, surreal landscapes, and a blend of science fiction and fantasy elements. His work often features detailed, organic forms, and he is recognized for his unique ability to convey a sense of otherworldly atmospheres. Moebius' use of flowing, curvilinear shapes and intricate patterns contributes to the dreamlike quality of his illustrations, setting him apart as a visionary artist in the realms of comic art and concept design.
Amazing show, glad I found it, right up my alley as a dreamer, space enthusiast, explorer , biologist ,and techno optimist . Hopefully , there is a season 2.

Just finished the finale. This show is FANTASTIC.
The finale? I thought there are still three episodes left?
@@awayfromjays nah. Episode 12 was the finale and it was awesome. It felt like every episode kept getting better and better from an awesome opening.
Netflix execs, if you’re reading this- you know what to do.
NOT cancel it like Netflix's other animated shows, I hope
It's so cool to see an adult animated series that's not a sitcom.
This has been such an incredible show! Well done to the team that produced it and I hope we get more content like this! Absolutely amazing!
I loved the first 3 episodes. I need more. The original short is genius as well.
It's like Moebius meets Miyazaki and Alex Garland put it together. Love this show and how it slowly creeps from fascinating to unsettling to outright terrifying.
*Best thing in quite some time!*
Looks amazing!
THANK YOU HBO. This did not dissapoint
I need season 2 ASAP, and following with a season 3 .
9/10 easily, just got done watching it, feels a lot like the movie annihilation, but as its 12 episodes long, it gets a lot of time to create intrigue, the horror aspects are so well done, especially the main villain and how well they flesh out the world, would recommend this show to anyone
The animation has a " Heavy Metal " feel to it. I dig it.
Its more like Les Maîtres du temps (Masters of Time) i think 😁👍
As someone who binge watched the entire show in a day, I love to see that the trailer shows everything and yet nothing at the same time.
There is a graphic artist named Moebius. This is Moebius animated.
This show was INCREDIBLE. We NEED a second season!! 🔥🔥🔥
Just 2 more days.
the characters weren't interesting, they were mostly cringe
I legitimately thing this is on tier with The Expanse as far as scifi shows that execute on their concept perfectly. In my top 10 scifi media forevermore.
Looks like Mobius. Also, should we survive long enough to get to the stars, it's good to have stories in there of how planets with life, belong to that life.
Moebius also worked with Laloux who made Time Masters which this reminds me of this as well.. Fantastic Planet too
Im making this show my new personality
This is my favorite animated series of 2023. The bizarre beauty of this world just grabbed me by chokehold and now I'm obsessed with the animals and plants. I'm even making up my own names for them. I call 0:45 frogbulls as a play on bullfrog as they look like a bull that has frog features (just watch the show to understand what I mean LOL).
This gives me Moebius art style and story vibes and I'm all for it. Can't wait to watch this.
Poignant, gruesome and beautiful.
Everything from the art, animation, world building, characters and themes are masterfully done.
10/10. Loved every second of it.
It’s INSANE HBO cancelled this lol it was so incredible
For anyone who had the algorithm bring them here, check this show out however you can. Seriously, it is so good.
We need more shows like this. My wife and I love it. Thank you all involved.
It is criminal that I have never heard of this show until today
I’m getting Subnautica vibes from this. Different ecosystem obviously but same feelings of terror and mystery that the game had
Subnautica (and games like that) lacks one fundamental element that makes stories like this special - characters. Game developers prefer to take the easy way out - no need to write compelling dialogue, create interactive reactive NPC AI, spend money on voice overs etc.
@@KK-fi6ms yea but nobody asked for your character essay
Just finished this series it is so good hope they make another one
I'm getting Aliens X Annihilation vibes from this trailer and I am loving it!
Best show on any streaming platform. I'm blown away
So, You only let this show exist publicly for 7 months or more? AND people rarely saw it promoted on top of that? DISGRACEFUL.
Criminally under-promoted. HBO executives should be jailed for it.
God this looks so good please give us more of this and more animation content
This show was insane
Is anyone else getting a Junji Ito's Hellstar Remina vibe from this cartoon?
Amazing show, glad I found it, right up my alley as a dreamer, space enthusiast, explorer , biologist ,and techno optimist . Hopefully , there is a season 2.
This looks incredible!! So excited for this!
Best show I’ve seen this year. The writers are well versed in gray lore
Gray lore?
