I wasted a ton of money trying to make a rainwater system. I bought one of those 275 gallon metal framed containers, set it up to collect water from my roof, plumbed it to a pump, and set up a timer. I made a "temporary" in-ground setup with 3 pop up heads and some PVC. well it works, but I used up all of the water in approximately 10 minutes and sometimes it wont fill for anotber week if its dry out. I have 2 acres (probably less than an acre of lawn ). so it works but be realistic about how much water you need to collect for what you want to do. uour setup is great by the way.
I only showed that one barrel, but I have in total about 1200 gallons and only 8000 sq/ft of lawn and a vegetable garden. So my works ok depending on rain fall. I can add about 1/2’ on the lawn a week and water vegetable garden every other day. This year the weather was great so it rained pretty much every week(+-1/2”). I also have a pretty big roof, that if we get 1/2” of rain it will fill two 275 rain barrels. Have you look into add more barrels? Maybe that’s what you need… good luck 👍
Heads up on a well, dry spells on our well hurts too. Our water tables drop fast, even at 400 feet down. I can run my sprinkler for about an hour before I have to switch to a backup well we have. Both fill a 100 gallon pressure tank and run around 4gpm on the pumps in the wells.
I’d like to do this as well for some help during the dry spells. The amount of water you have to store is the challenge. But I’ll give it a try. I would like to find a pump that could run off a battery with a solar panel to charge it. It might not run a pump that large but maybe a smaller pump with a different sprinkler setup. Thanks for the idea!
Your video just popped up in my feed. May I suggest rigging a float switch in your barrel so you don’t accidentally burn out you pump by not paying attention. The same kind that would be on a submersible sump pump.
I tried to run my gas powered transfer pump off a big trash can and got a minute runtime before it was empty. It depends on how big your rain barrels are and what your pump specs are, whats the psi and gpm it can handle ? If its high youll be limited to short run times. Mine is 195 gpm and 50 psi. Emptied a full trash can in a minute.. of course mine is 2" in and out
hey man awesome video. i’m trying to rig up a solar system that runs this pump on a timer. my concern right now though is that it that the pump has to be primed every use? my initial plan is to leave the rain barrel valve open and let the pump work as the valve. the pump will be plugged into a timer that’s plugged into the power inverter and the battery. does that sound like it would work to you?
I also started working on a solar system!!! 😁 and the only problem you may encounter is siphon or syphon, the water will keep running even though pump is not running… you may need to add a shut off valve after the pump… that would also keep pump primed… good luck!!! 🍀👍
Would you be kind enough to provide a link for the fitting that goes from the pump to the garden hose? I'm have trouble finding the 1 inch x 5/8 fitting
As far as I know garden hoses fittings are 3/4 inches tread and 5/8 is the thickness of hose.( in the USA) Is the 1 inch side treaded? If so is it female or male? All you need to say is 1 inch female(or male) to 3/4 treaded pcv adaptor. Here is a link for what I used at my house, I hope it helps 1-in x 3/4-in Schedule 40 PVC Reducing Female Adapter www.lowes.com/pd/Charlotte-Pipe-1-IN-X-3-4-IN-ADAPTER-FEMALE-ADAPTER/5012475655
It’s rated for 1075 gph, about 18 gpm… I got pump at Harbor freight about $150 and yes I got a T after making video, didn’t really notice much difference…thanks for watching…✌️
Would this pump work well for increasing the PSI/ volume out of my spigot to my rotor sprinkler head? I have about 50 x 50 sq feet area I need to water in my backyard. My water pressure is fairly standard Coming out of spigot, and I want the one rotor sprinkler head to have enough pressure to cover my entire backyard area. Thoughts??
I never tried that, fortunately I have good pressure here… but it may work, as long the volume of water is enough to keep pump full…I know they sell water pressure boosters, they may be cheaper…I have to say I like the pump from Harbor freight, but is kind of heavy…I hope it helps and best of luck Troy…
Why does everyone have it set up with stuff running everywhere and laying in the yard. Mount it on the side of the house or anything is better than just setting it out in the yard.
@@dreslawnsandthings thank you !!! In the description i saw you stored 200 gallons just wanted to know how much each barrel holds , how many gallons does the sprinkler head distribute per hour

Living in texas i also collect my ac drainage and use that for the grass and garden.
Hi John, I do something similar too… I extended the a/c hose right to flower pots!!! Saving money anywhere I can !!!! LOL 😂
Your yard is awesome man.
Thank you!!

Yes, I am working on a more permanent setup, bigger tanks pump and a float!! Why pay for water right? Thank you for watching…
Cool, Can you adjust the amount of water you use by turning down the water flow from the tank
I never tried, but I don’t see an issue…
Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it

Hi Christopher!! My is a harbor freight and I think it pumps about 18gpm… Lol 😂 and 50 psi… I just use garden hoses in and out, I think they are 5/8”…
I suggest not watering mid day but cool idea!
Yes Chewy , early In the morning, That was about 9:00 am… we had rain in the forecast and I wanted to empty barrels…Thank you for watching!!!
Cool!!what is the sprinkle head call and where you purchased it. Thank you for sharing
Hello 👋… I purchased at Home Depot it is called a Melnor Deluxe Metal Pulsating Sprinkler with Tripod, I think I paid about $50… thanks for watching…
That pump is impressive! How long does it take for you to drain out one completely full barrel using that pump and sprinkler?
45-50 minutes… very happy with pump and the price was right!!!

How many gals per min is your pump rated at, and have you thought about running both barrels at the same time using a T? Ty

How long does 50gal last?
That would depend on the type of pump my takes about 10 to 15 minutes…
Why does everyone have it set up with stuff running everywhere and laying in the yard. Mount it on the side of the house or anything is better than just setting it out in the yard.
I like that idea… working on a more permanent setup…
How many horse power is your pump?
1 HP… pretty good so far!!!
How much does each rain barrel hold ?
They have them in all different sizes, this one holds about 50 gallons!!
@@dreslawnsandthings thank you !!! In the description i saw you stored 200 gallons just wanted to know how much each barrel holds , how many gallons does the sprinkler head distribute per hour
Can I use a sump pump instead?
Hi, that I am not sure, I don’t think they put out a lot…but if you try and works let me know!!! Thanks!!!
Thank you
But get some NRG in your speech
Thanks… I’ll try!!!
