@@timwilcox960 The definition of legal tender is set out clearly in UK law. For settling debts, LT is perfect but not purchasing at stores. The store has the right to reject any form of legal tender they wish. (Certain coins, large notes) Royal Mint Souvenir shop rejects certain types of legal tender where TESCO accepts. It's their right to do so, just ironic.
I actually visited the Royal Mint in Wales a few years ago. I looked at some of there coins. Ludicrous prices. Did not buy anything. As for old base metal crowns. Most flea markets or car boot sales have these at very, very, low prices. I bought some of these decades ago when released. I now realise it was a very bad investment.
What a joke! It’s ridiculous how they think they can get that sort of money for something that is worth a few quid at the most! The Royal Mint is going down the road of a few other smaller mints in this country that take the P, and hoping they can get customers who don’t have the knowledge to massively overpay for tat! And yeah that silver coin set is misleading as anyone who didn’t read it first would think they’re getting 12 coins, instead of not realising that they are seeing both sides of one coin 🤦♂️ 🤦♂️
Imagine if the RM instead made small nostalgia purses dedicated to selected decades in newer history with their logo on it and the line, e.g. "1960's pocket change" - with a variation of pence pieces inside and sold such a purse for £10. The RM would still make a profit without ripping people off.
Very true regarding your observations. If the coins were of a really good standard as opposed to what I consider are mediocre quality then there would be some justification for the price.
Don't like the way the Royal Mint is going and feel quite let down by the mints pricing structures to the point were I have not purchased any off the new coins including the sovereigns
You saw this coming a few months ago…..they were testing the waters. I can see the designers of fantastic previous Mint’s products aghast at what they are seeing being sold.
Swear I bought 3 of those Churchill ones for £1 each at a local antique sale a while ago all in great condition. And was told by my Nan she was given one for free at work when Churchill died 😂
The royal mint is usually quite bad at selling historic coins, i wish they'd make some cool new series I'd love to see a cities or counties of the UK series kind of like what the USA did putting states on the coins to help kids learn them
Hi BYB, That the Royal Mint don't take you up on your offer and engage with you directly or via the comments section of your videos tells you - and your 55,000+ subscribers - all we need to know. Obviously, your criticisms are 100% correct. I've written to them about their quality control issues and they haven't even had the courtesy to acknowledge receipt of my e-mail (and snail mail copy letter) - let alone provide a proper reply. Their standards and customer service are trending strongly; in a downward direction, unfortunately. 😞
Latest cash grab from the royal mint. Greed prevails (as usual)... Maybe with all their new profits from scamming new or unknowing customers, perhaps they could invest a little of their I’ll gotten gains into improving the quality control of the items that people like in the know stackers as well as coin collectors will buy.
I wouldn't buy them but they are advertised as a collection not an investment . They have always done over priced tat as a kid i have numerous full collection of coins ina cardboard sleeve that were far more expensive than face value . Some RM stuff is excellent but much of it isnt.
If your lucky enough to still be in the company of your grandparents then just ask to have a rummage in their junk drawer 😂 I’m sure there’s plenty kicking around as I acquired quite a few from my farther and grandparents. I literally picked out 12 three pence coins which can been seen in your vid at what looks like £12.50 from the royal mint 🤦🏻♂️✌️
Great video as always, but actually I think you're being a bit harsh on the Royal Mint. I think one needs to take into account a 'curation value' when considering these types of product. If someone's new to coin collecting, just going on eBay is like dropping someone in the wilderness - they won't know which way to go. There's value in the knowledge that comes with these coins - which ones are rare, which aren't, what are the stories behind them? There's also the graphic design of the cardboard sleeves to consider too, which is usually very good from RM. Put all that together and while I don't think the products are cheap, I don't think they're a rip-off either.
Biggest irony of Royal Mint.
They produce legal tender coinage but don't accept it in their own souvenir shop.
Seriously: you mean they only accept payment via credit/debit card? If so, that's extraordinary!

I did wonder if you was going to do a rant on these today .... love it 😂 very true
Oh yes, gonna do it time and time again when I see bad sets.
BYB in contrast this shows your high level of integrity to the business and you have set the bench mark high for bigger sellers to follow.
BYB 100% agree. The mint must hate u 😂. They need u on their team to boost sales❤
Who is in charge of marketing it's absolutely scandalous they are charging extreme prices that really puts me off buying from the mint 😢
Yep, I agree
My Churchill Crown cost me exactly One Crown (Five Shillings) in 1965! 😁
They're trying to corner the 'London Mint' market lol
Lol, you said it not me
😂😂😂

Those CuNi Crowns, 1951 and up, are readily available in Canada for very low prices.
What comes to my mind with RM historic coins format is shoddy and expensive at this moment.
Well said.

You're not wrong.
I agree, they need to just focus on making new innovative coins.

Totally agree

My thoughts are the same with ian.
I agree.

The Flagship Silver and Gold sets are a disgusting rip off, I don't know how the RM have the verve to market them. Shame on you RM!!!

The Australian Perth mint has better quality standards than the Royal Mint. Who are the real criminals ? 😉
