- Thanks for checking out our Soundgarden reaction. We decided to checkout 4th of July for the holiday with the same name. We thought it could be a good song to do on the fourth. Um... yeah we were wrong about that lol. It was a cool song, but it wasn't really relevant to the holiday lol.

No one does this song. Right on
Rappers react did it today too. Two great reaction channels.
@@MacAnAirchinnighJM Oh cool, I like those dudes, primarily because they are obsessed with MJK and Tool
@@joehynes5452 for sure, that’s what got me into them too. All the reactors I follow stems from Tool reactions when I think about it haha. The boys on Trash Talkers definitely joined the Tool army and represent.
Great song
Yesssss, love you for this. Happy 4th!
When I think of "grunge" I think of dark abstract poetry combined with slow, sludgy, distorted guitar riffs.
Most of the bands labeled as grunge came out of Seattle, known for the constant rain which can also be very depressing. I think you hear that in their music.
This lady gets it! Soundgarden got an award for best Metal song… and they said…”ummmm we aren’t metal”
It's nice to see someone doing something different for once...amazing dark album. The bass strings are practically falling off it's tuned so low...Happy Fourth of July 🎆
That's a good way to put it. I could totally see the band members trying not to trip over their strings on stage during this song
How best to describe grunge? Raw/Dirty. A little smokey a little wet.
For me this was always on of Soundgardens darkest songs. First reaction I recall seeing. Thank you.
yeah this is the sludgier side of grunge: thick, dark, heavy
"Sludgy" would also be another good description.
"Slaves and Bulldozers" is by far my favorite Soundgarden song with "4th of July" coming in at a close second! 🤘🏼
- The footage is of nuclear tests.
- The song was based around a trip they took to an Native Reservation and dropped acid.
- There was this guy from Seattle who was pretty good at playing guitar, called Jimi Hendrix. Who created a psychedelic take on the Star Spangled Banner. This was Soundgarden's shoutback.
- To show how good this song is, the two voices singing are both Chris Cornell, which really shows off his range in a single song.
Happy 4rth. Putting you on to listen to while I drive!!
Meat on a Smoker is perfect for grunge.
It just IS Seattle. Washington. Cloudy, rainy, Pacific Northwest. Flannel. Boots. Long hair. Of the earth. Real. Nothing phony. No bs. Just rock and roll with sprinkles of punk, classic rock, and country.
Also, I really hope yall get into more Chris Cornell music, as he's one of the greatest vocalist in modern rock. Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, and Audioslave are his bands, plus his solo work. In particular, his covers of "Billie Jean" and "Nothing Compares to You" are top notch. Love watching your reviews, and listening to your often deep commentary!
Seasons is a must hear
I love the way she explained Grunge. If I had to explain it, I'd say it's raw, gritty, dirty, unpolished and pure and genuine. It's a mix of punk and metal.
“Slaves and Bulldozers “, good ‘heavy’ song by Soundgarden! RIP MR CORNELL😥
Super rad that she picked up on those octave changes in the voices during the chorus. It’s haunting and one of the coolest parts of the song. This is a bad ass slow jam. Check out: Down, Bury Me In Smoke.
Slaves and Bulldozers. Chris kills it in this song. its a must hear
The idea of the song came while Chris was getting pulled over by the police, while tripping on acid. The lights reminded him of the fourth of July. Chris purposely wrote lyrics that meant nothing in particular. Yes he was amused when people tried figuring the meaning
11:51 this part was so cute you 2 are so wonderful :D
AHHHH.. Been one of my all time favs since I first heard it high as hell one crazy ass night in the early-mid 90's .....seen visions to this song, suddenly even the trash made sense. hahaha You have no idea how long I been waiting for this to hit a reaction channel! Interesting to see how others perceive it. LEX you should check out this entire CD Its called SUPERUNKNOWN I played it all the time non stop....you also have to understand what acid actually does to certain individuals .....to some it ain't just taking a drug, its the next level, as you see how he took the experience to the next lvl lol ...LEX, LIMO WRECK
Anyone who grew up on grunge but didn't know yet what doom was, this song helped be a segue.
Grunge is basically a type of post-punk/metal, or rock that came out the other side of both. I dunno, but I went to loads of punk shows in the 80s, and nearly every one had at least one metal band in the lineup. Then I started hearing "grunge," and it felt like a natural progression, or a mutation that totally fit. The people in all those bands were going to the same kinda shows throughout the 80s, just in a different town.
I know the next 4th of July is half a year away but a suggested reaction for July 4, 2022 is Jimi Hendrix - Star Spangled Banner.
This song is about an acid trip on or around the 4th of July. Cc says on the live cut from the artists den in 2013
the lyrics also say that, "thought it was the 4 July" he was seeing things he thought was fireworks.
Excellent song choice!
Light a Roman Candle and hold it in your hand.....
Grunge came about as a reaction to the super polished pop and rock of the 80s to make something rawer and more authentic and with a particular focus on the darker sides of life - in particular addiction, mental issues and abuse. This sort of evolved into nu-metal in the 90s, with the same lyrical themes and focus on downtempo songs with downtuned, distorted guitars but with hiphop and tribal music influences.
"Grunge" evolved from the 1980s American underground -- one of the most significant movements in all of rock history.
its a song about a acid trip that happened during a july 4th. one of the best rock songs of all time imo
The different vocals you're hearing is Chris. He double tracked his vocals. Maybe even triple tracked on this tune. There's the low, baritone and high tenor he sings... doing the same lyrics sang at the same time and that give it that layered sound.
I love this song. Great to see someone doing a reaction to it, regardless of reasoning.
Cornell's low register doubled with high register belting right thru the thing, on top of that dirty low-tuned core guitar riff, with bass & drums beefing it up into one of the most oppressive dirges you're ever likely to come across.... so satisfying. I got totally weirded-out when the song finished btw, & had to play the last couple of songs out immediately!! ("Superunknown" is very much an *album* to me, & should be listened to as such) :)
I haven't heard this song in years and I'm a gen X Seattle dude.
@@bothellkenmore I still listen to this album often & I'm a gen X Scotland dude! Well met :)
Damn, you guys hit the deep cuts. Nice
Ok but Grunge was king when I was in HS and as much as I wanna go full on Aslan and say "don't quote the old magic to me witch, I was there when it was written," I can't because honestly, Lex' descriptions of grunge might be the best I've ever heard. Honestly with most of the music from that era, there is no deciphering the lyrics straight on. You gotta come at them sideways cause that was how they were written.
Anyway Happy 4th everyone!
Thanks for doing this one!
Sing whatever sounds good with the music. That’s how it seems a lot of the songs are. Whatever words sound good
Smoke a joint, put on some headphones, and lay back and listen to this song again.
this is my ABSOLUTE FAVE....Soundgarden song......Jesus Christ Pose is a CLOSE SECOND. But this song is DEEEEP. It is soulfull, dark, very GRUNGE. But man.....it gripped me from THE FIRST moment I heard it. And I will say this, I love the MUSIC.....not the lyrics. I cant make any sense of the lyrics....the sound....the SOUND.....not the lyrics....is what made me love this song.
And the fact that LEX said she did ACID during this react.......makes me love her EVEN MORE. Which I thought was impossible. You cute, and enlightened. Man.....
This is the song i use to practice singing... listening to it. theres nothing else like this song.. its as deep and dark as you get wih grunge.. the singing.. try singing it without music.. such a beuatiful song..
and grunge is the essence of the misaligned in music form
i got this cd and played the hell out of it..this song is just one that I got into..the whole cd is great..music I didnt play into the lyrics too much
I thought there would be a reaction at the end of the lyric 'Jesus tries to crack a smile.. beneath another shovel load'... that lyric gets me every time! Does that get anyone else? I'm not a religious guy at all but that lyric is deep!
Meat on a smoker lol I'm dying over here lol love it tho!
This is the first one on my top-10 mix for Soundgarden (I just like making 10-song back-to-back mixes of bands I like, as a kinda hobby). In case you wanted to check any others out, the list is: Fourth of July, Black Rain, Blind Dogs, Zero Chance, Pretty Noose, Limo Wreck, Cold Bitch, Bones of Birds, Like Suicide, Tighter & Tighter.
Rock song lyrics are metaphorical by trade!
I'm pretty sure Cornell said this was inspired by a rough acid trip in DC
Happy Independence Day!
YAAAAAAAAAAAAS! This is awesome!
Grunge is the antithesis to 80s glam rock: real, authentic, dark and unrefined vs. fake party rock with guys wearing makeup.
You guys are going to take over
OK straight up so happy to see this right now - I am in Sydney Australia, in lockdown, and been thinking about the irony of Independence Day all day..... in any case I have had an awesome one, and as much as this is low low down there kinda song, well, its 4th of July. As always, rip Chris, so angry that you did that, still, while I keep fighting on.
There's another song about Trippin on the Fourth of July... 311 - Homebrew!!!
I always thought it was about Fireworks
0mg lex you got it yep 4th of July is about aan acid trip yaaaaaehhhhh
The great metaphorical tune on this album is the last one "Like Suicide". Best song on the album bar none.
A few suggestions from Soundgarden... my all time favorite "Fell On Black Days." "Burden In My Hand" is another awesome one. For Audioslave, "I Am The Highway" is gorgeous!
He’s wrote this song while being on a very strong trip on acid.
The word you were looking for is “Analogous”
Limo wreck is my favorite song tho. 4th of July is 2nd.
You know what makes this genre so distinct and great, is that there will only be a one Chris Cornell, one Kurt Cobain, one Eddie Vedder and one layne. There will obviously be imitators but nothing will ever be like how these four bands, ever again. Once in a lifetime , this will not happen again, something that goes totally against the norm and takes over the world, like grunge did
I think that album tour they opened for Guns and Roses.
Yes girl, this is grunge ❤️
Superunknown album was actually their first time making the mainstream.
He had said this before preforming it .
Grunge is mainly gritty guitar as opposed to “metal” which is much sharper in the guitar.
Just my interpretation…
I would recommend to check out a track called "Holy Water" from them. 😎👍
He wrote this after tripping on acid for the first time
In case no one actually knows. This song is about being fucked up on acid. Chris said it himself
Guys! You can't go on a Soundgarden rabbit hole and not start with either Jesus Christ Pose or Rusty Cage. It's literally like listening to Eminem and not hearing his first 2 hits.
Grunge is where Black Sabbath meets the Ramones meets the Beatles. It is thumping metal, gritty punk rock, and melodic poetry all in one.
Even more confusing, no two grunge bands even sounds the same, because it is more about the feeling at the time, and getting away from the over produced, excess rock of the 80s.
Not every song is about something. Hence Beck
here's way I've always taken this song in i heard it in the wind i saw it in the night thought was the end but it was the 4th of July in England its guy forks night penny for the guy give the kids penny's to burn the scarecrow sort of guy on the fire to celebrate bomb fire night guy forks who almost blew up gov. chambers both holidays fireworks represent bombs so as a song writer i sing i heard it in the wind saw it in the night thought it was the end cept it was bomb fire night the sounds of war mistaken as celebration
Black dolla....spell check....is a famous murder in Hollywood
Best SG song ever imo, shit never gets old.
Love this girl, she's officially a Grunge/Metal Head... Welcome.
Isn’t she the cutest thing?
True, but she had those red doc Martin's back in the day😊! You guys are an awesome couple and love all your reviews!
I've always loved this song. It's so off kilter. The riff sounds so dark, dirgy & heavy, but then the vocals, lyrics & melody are so beautiful & cryptic. 🖤
The simultaneous escalating and deescalating tones on the chorus of Juuuuuullllllyyyyy is so eerie and killer
The lyrics in this song are unmatched
A bad acid trip
Soundgardens - Like Suicide is a beautiful song that rocks.
💯
Bird flies into the window and he goes outside and finishes it off with a brick and writes the most beautiful song about it.
My absolute fave Soundgarden song, underrated IMO.
@@clairash2004 criminally underrated man it’s such an awesome song
@@jacobansaldo7054 i whole heartedly agree.
This track is like blues had a mental breakdown. My favourite Soundgarden track.
my absolute favorite as well, although boot camp comes close.
its a gooodun,
I have also heard that Chris has said it’s about PTSD for veterans and how fireworks can trigger them to have attacks thinking there is gun fire going off and often we are celebrating the veterans service on the 4th of July. So it’s a bit ironic that we do that and potentially hurt them by celebrating their service. And I see where it comes from but also have read this story of his acid trip a few times too.
Great review! Chris’s solo stuff is great as well as all Soundgarden albums and his lyrics on Audioslave are some of my favourite of all time.
Chris said once in an interview that lyrically this was his favorite Soundgarden song. I’m in total agreement!
"OUTSHINED" is also a must for a dive into Soundgarden!! ;) ;)
The atmosphere of this song is SO heavy and just *dark.* it’s beautiful in a really morose way. I adore the vibe.
exactly
My favorite song by them, I love playing and singing this. My favorite by far.
Chris himself once said in an interview that lyrically, this was his favorite Soungarden song! And I agree, always been at the top of my list.
Saying Grunge is like "Meat on a smoker" is such an apt metaphor, very insightful! Grunge is dark, sorrow, hurt, pain that is so deep that it's become lethargic. That feeling of being so down that you just don't have the energy to do anything about it. The lyrics are usually poetic, sometimes meaningful too. I'd LOVE to see you two react to "Comet" by The Midnight sometime! Synthwave is such an amazing genre!
but also like meat on a smoker , it can be so moist and yummy too, don't forget the smoke ring!!
The guy screaming in the back is Chris LOLOL
Its a song about an acid trip. Chris had experienced once when he was younger
The best term Lex used was Raw! It’s real and undisguised. After the party life, hair band era, people embraced Grunge because it showed where this life may lead without putting lipstick on it. And a lot of people were suffering through it or dying because of it
Grunge musicians were influenced by the Punk music scene of 20 years earlier. Grunge is post post punk rock
And yes. 4th of July was about an acid trip Chris Cornell had.
Do you think they would like any of the punk music from the 70's?Maybe that's going too far back lol
Post post.
Nice.
💚
I mean not all grunge is post punk rock, nirvana fits that description but none of the other big 4 fit that description especially SG and Alice In Chains. Grunge was more of a movement and acne and not a specific or genre, Alice In Chains sounds absolutely nothing like Nirvana but they’re still both 2 of the big 4 grunge bands. AIC were much more inspired by bands like Black Sabbath than any post punk stuff, Pearl Jam was also like more stadium rock type stuff but nothing like post punk.
True some bands were influenced by punk sabbat some t rex sabbath
I think the word you were looking for near the beginning was "poetic." Chris's lyrics are often poetic. They're meant to evoke a feeling, rather than being a literal description of anything. In some ways I like this form of lyricism more, because it encourages you to listen to the voice part as an equal to the other instruments.
The word would be esoteric, but of course poetic is true. Not everything poetic is hard to understand though.
She was looking for analytical too haha.
Soundgarden always brings the 💥
Happy 4th America.
Time to do his prince cover of nothing compares to you.
Prince / Sinead O'Connor*
Gs johnny cash cover is better
@@josemadera3138 my absolute favorite is his acoustic cover of thank you by Led Zeppelin on the Howard Stern show.
@@AClark-jx9zp his cover of U2/ Metallica one is my favorite
@@josemadera3138 Johnny Cash anything is on my playlist.
4th of July has always stood out to me on this album since I first heard it in 94. I used to listen to my dad's cassette tape of Superknown. I enjoy rediscovering music while watching your reactions! Thanks 😊
youre having a hard time discerning grunge because it doesn't exist my friend. its a term coined by the media at the time for bands from seattle in the late 80's early 90's. there was never a group of musicians saying lets make a grunge song. it never happened. at least not before it became popular nationally
I was born in 89 and i always heard the term grunge. I know what u sayin is right but i say it all the time still. Guess seatle sound is the correct term. Heard people from Seattle would fight u if u came around talkin bout grunge. Lol
I see grunge as not a genre but an era
its a movement not a genre.
Rusty Cage is a must, even Johnny Cash covered it!!
Chris Cornell once said that he writes the song but once he gives it away it's no longer his anymore it's in the consumer's hands to interpret it it in any way that it works for them
you need to do. Alice in chains down in a hole MTV unplugged version
This song is about a bad acid trip during a fireworks show lol
Lex absolutely nailed 'grunge' 🙏❤️
Oh my God it's funny you say that about wine. I've often compared Soundgarden's music to to a fine wine. It can be liked and enjoyed by anybody really, but it'll be best appreciated by people who can understand its structure and its layers and what has gone into making it.
Chris Cornell wrote this song when he was tripping on LSD. Your welcome
This has always been my favorite Soundgarden song. I always took it as a breakup song. The 4th of July is Independence Day. He was trying to ignore what was happening, but he was seeing and hearing it everywhere until he realized it was over and declared his independence from his tormenter
I think it's about nuclear war, that it inevitably will happen.
Nah, he was dropping acid
Grunge was a reaction to the previous decade of taking showmanship ( laser light shows, big pyrotechnics, hair spray, and glitter ) as far as it could go. Talent, great songwriting and passionate perfomances began to cut through the plastic, industry-driven, self-parody that eighties product had become. The opposite of performers in day-glo spandex, hair spray, and lipstick was those in ripped jeans or nylons, with unwashed hair and smudged make-up.
Tripple Darkness #SwordDust
Happy 4th of July!! Hope your day is fantastic!. Thank you for your reaction! Anything Chris Cornell is great. You should check out his cover of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean & Led Zeppelin's Thank You. He has one of the best voices ever. I love your reactions! Lex is too funny and i always get exactly what she means!
Grunge = "Sludgy" yet heavy instrumentals, deep/heavy (grimy/messy ie., grungy) lyrics.... that's how Grunge" has always read in my head anyway!! LOVE it!! ;)
