      I'm puzzled by your inability to think of other stories that focus more on the settings. Lots of stories do. Especially video games which mostly have silent protaganists that are plopped into a world without much explanation. The setting is all the game has.
      Silent Hill is a perfect example.
      Pretty much any haunted house movie.
      Lots of movies about virtual realities (Matrix, Tron).
      I would say even the original Halo was more about the setting. That was a heavy focus of the advertising. What the hell is this mysterious ringworld? That was the focus.
      A lot of historical dramas are focused on the setting.
      Jurassic Park has much less focus on characters and a lot more on how the park was built and why it is failing, specifically written/filmed as an example of how Chaos Theory works.
      Bioshock again is about the downfall of a great city. There is a great character element to it as well but I'd have to say the setting takes centre stage.
      Many Bethesda games are more about the world and lore. I can't even give a shit about the characters in most of their games and I don't think the writers do either lol.
      Just a few examples off the top of my head.
      Otherwise, good video as always dude!

      Well I was certainly having a hard time thinking about it on the spot, either way that bit was to show just how rare those types of stories are. "Mostly unheard of" is how I put it :P

    "Six! That AI chose you. She made the right choice."
    I remember hearing that line for the first time, and it gave me chills. It pays homage to the relationship between Cortana and Chief. For example, at the beginning of Halo 3, Cortana made a reference about how she could've chosen any Spartan she wanted, but she chose John because he was the luckiest of them all; he's also the bravest and the best of the Spartans as well. Cortana made that same decision with Noble Six. He was simply the best of Noble Team. And as a player, you feel emboldened because the game puts you in the shoes of Six. You ARE Noble Six, the Spartan who passed the mantle of responsibility.

    • @naxxodrop

      Holy sheet that comment makes me cry. Halo it's nothing about only the chief, but all the hummanity that help him to make his story much esier it could be. Halo means much more than that. That's why Halo Reach is my second favourite after Halo 2.

      It’s crazy how much easier they Covenant would’ve been defeated if Six was able to get on the Pillar before that supercarrier caused him to stay. Him and Chief were the best Spartans to exist and only overwhelming odds stopped Six and Master Chief is still around. Too bad for 312

    • @ShiningDarknes
      @ShiningDarknes 6 лет назад +59

      If six instead of jun was the one to get on Pillar the damn spartan IV project would have been unnecessary. 2 legendary badasses (and the arbiter I guess) would have been conflict over, war won, gg. Just remember: That pussy Jun retired (yeah whatever he supposedly was too depressed over the loss of his entire squad, but Chief lost way more comrades that he GREW UP WITH *cough* Spartan II program in a nutshell *cough* ) Six could have been just as good as Chief, I mean the dude was a solo headhunter in all likelihood before being shipped to Reach.

    I'll admit, when Kat got shot through the head I actually short circuited for a minute. It was so sudden and unexpected that there was no way to subconsciously prepare for it. And that is how you know it was so well done. Because in war, a lot of the time death is just around the corner and completely unexpected. One moment you could be thinking about your loved ones back home and the next you could be showered in the brain matter of your comrade who'd just been shot by an enemy sniper.
    I really think Reach added a tangible sense of reality to the true nature of war.

    I couldn't agree more with the whole "not every soldier gets remembered for their sacrifices, but war shouldn't be glorified either" theme of Halo: Reach. Take Jorge's death. Jorge made a heroic sacrifice. He took out the Covenant command ship. He did everything that was necessary, in the situation at hand, to defend his home. He achieved his objective successfully. And yet, immediately after he died, his sacrifice was nullified.

    • @knavenformed9436

      Yeah I love Reach for what the story is.
      The whole team is so bad ass and you get to experience all their roles in the missions and get to know them and how invincible Spartans seem to be.
      Yet it also shows how brutal and down to eart Halo's world can be even though Noble Team seems like it could mop every floor.
      It also makes Master Chief seem even stronger for those who like him, he's truly special after seeing how Noble Team fell, they did everything near perfectly, yet the force of the world outshadows even the best Spartans.

Not so much for real Halo fans who have played them all for years, but it’s forces everyone, especially those not very familiar with the franchise (outside of Chief) to understand the gravity of how fucked humanity was the whole time. And whine Spartans and especially Chief are insane. There’s only so many of them to be thrown at the covenant.

Where Rogue One sets the stage for Luke Skywalker to save the galaxy, Reach sets it up for the Master Chief.

      TotallyRealistic it wasn't retconned completely. I'll have to find it but they actually fit Reaches story with the book Fall of Reach. It's not perfect but it does work. Personally I Follow the books and I just think of Reach as a game and just a game. Btw idk how anyone else felt when they first read Fall of Reach but it's what got me hooked on Halo and I was 13 or so and I been a fan and reading the books ever since. I wish they would have left the Forerunners more mysterious and I wish they never appeared in the games. I also love the Black ops of ONI in the books. I wish we had a game that was about the insurrection while playing as a Helljumper squad. Kinda like Halo Odst but I wanna feel more human. I felt like you could play like a Spartan still in that game. I shouldn't be able to melee a Brute as just a normal guy. A game based around more tactics and strategy rather than run and gun. Being able to call in air strikes, having squads where every member had a specific duty (heavy weapons, sniper, medic etc.) And always feeling like you are hopelessly outmatched when coming across a group of brutes or elites. Until the SAW came in Halo 4 I never understood why the UNSC never had a light machine gun. So in this dream game of mine the soldiers would have one for the heavy weapons soldier. Sorry for rambling,kinda stoned and just talking bout halo and the what ifs.

      Emile went out swinging at least, but I didn't feel anything from the guy since you see so little of him in the game.

      It is, but I’d say there’s a difference in that Dunkirk is based off real war. It’s a very easy story to pick up, because there’s nothing a director needs to add to make it more about what it is. Dunkirk was about Dunkirk, and the people in it were all so important, yet unimportant. Again, Dunkirk is definitely setting driven, but I feel like the comparison is too easy! :)

      Wes Gilkey I always hated how ONI treated her like the criminal for what she did. Yeah it wasn't right but without her Spartan 2s, humanity loses the war. Her research made it possible for future programs to take her findings and improve on them with the updated tech. Let's not forget the Spartan 3s were kids too. They didn't go through all that the S2s had to go through but still kids. If anything it was worse cause they wanted to make them faster and cheaper and use them for suicide missions. But somehow she is the one to blame. I don't agree. No matter what they call all the future soldiers who wear the armor, they will never be true Spartans. S2s were the best cause they were bred to be the best and no one can come close to them. From 7 years old they trained together, ate, studied, fought and suffered together. They were the perfect squads and devoted themselves for humanity. Halsey did what was necessary and it turned out to be what saved all of humanity. They used her as a scapegoat when ONI knew exactly what was going on and they went along with it and funded it. If anything Halsey made sure everything was the best for them rather than treat them as a piece of military equipment

      @QuantaSolace 6 лет назад +6

      She seemed like she had a different opinion of the III's (at least Noble Team) in Reach than she did in Ghost of Onyx. Halsey seemed to feel sorry for the III's when she found out they were sent on one-way missions, and the majority of the III's were wiped out. If I remember right, she felt sorrier for Gamma Company due to them receiving mind-altering drugs to make them more aggressive when they reached high levels of stress. In the book Last Light, they needed a cocktail of drugs to calm down and not go insane.
      It seems like in Reach, she has some scorn for Noble because they seemed more (with the exception of Jorge) like puppets in her eyes.

    Aye mate Reach is a great game and I got something for ya. Carter and Kat arent in love, but are actually close due to them being the only ones that survived everything. What I mean by that was there were previous Noble 6's and previous Noble 3's, 4's, and 5's, and those two were the only ones that lived through all their deaths and watched all their previous teammates fall in battle. Thats why they are so close, because they've seen some shit and are the only two who truly know about it.

They mention it during the cutscene after Kat's death, when Six jumps over the hill to help the ODSTs (I think they were ODSTs, I can't remember). But yes, they otherwise did have a close relationship due to being the only surviving members of the original team.

Reach had pretty nifty innovation by giving us armor abilities to spice up gameplay while still retaining the classic feeling of the game. The Halo community was very much thriving during Reach. Halo 4 was the game that turned into call of duty- everyone stopped playing after the first 4 months. I just have a hard time understanding how you can put the blame on Reach and not Halo 4 lol.

    The subtleties in the characters is what makes Reach such a great game imo. It helps keep the focus on Reach, the setting, which SHOULD be the main focus of this game. At the same time, I truly think it fleshes out each character just enough that you feel like they're their own people with personality, flaws, goals, morals, dynamics, etc. without too much exposition or character dumping. I don't think you need more than that in this game. Again, it keeps the focus on the setting and I truly felt the gravity of the conflict throughout the game. Being a single Spartan group in a large planetary war really makes you feel like the situation is desperate and that your actions are crucial to stopping it. If there was more focus on each character, I think some of that feeling would be lost and that to me is the most important part of Reach: its a dire, hopeless situation but yet your role is essential for not just saving Cortana but allowing the events of the entire original trilogy to happen. That gives this game so much weight and emotion that, again, I think would be lost if too much focus was placed on each member of Noble team.
    And lastly, its so fucking cool that you can create your custom armor for the game including in every cutscene. It gives you so much investment in and connection to the story and the campaign. This game was controversial when it came out but looking back I think it was the perfect swan song to Bungie's Halo.

    I loved Reach. The characters, the setting, the feeling of it and the theme present. It really made humanity feel like the underdogs, and that the war with the covenant was long and brutal. It also gave the felling of "This is it. We hold the line. No surrender, no retreat". It showed humanities struggle. Each of Noble Team felt like individuals, yet they all serve as Spartans

    Hot take time:
    Halo: Reach's characters were definitely shallow. 100%, from the get go.
    They're a bunch of misfit orphans who spent their whole life under intense military indoctrination. They put up those faces because that's what was expected of them.
    You only see the real human beings in their last days. Kat's "I'm smarter than you so be quiet" attitude became legitimate frustration and confusion. She had things under control for so long and only now realized she didn't. Desperation and anguish were here last emotions, frustration at the realization that she was losing her grip, before she lost her head.
    Emile's violent outbursts were gone when he realized he was going to die. He went from Shadow the Hedgehog to nearly silent by the end of the game.
    His last words were that last bit of acceptance. "I'm ready, how about you?"
    It didn't feel like Carter actually believed Six was the right choice for the A.I. But, in his last moments, his humility and positivity shined as he gave his full support to a silent stranger while he bled out behind that pilot's seat. He knew, in his last moments, that he actually would give his life for his team.
    George never got to develop, much. I honestly felt like he was the most simple of the characters--but that's because George was just a good guy. There wasn't a whole lot of regret or frustration, he knew what his choice was and stuck with it until the very end.
    Jun's snarky limericks were quickly wiped from his cockiness when things became serious. He became a listener instead of a talker, focused on the mission--because he knew the importance of his objectives. He may have survived Reach, but Mankind seemed doomed.
    They were cardoard cutouts, because they were trained to be. When the UNSC's grip faded under the Covenant onslaught, when mortality really sunk in, they became humans and real characters.
    That was my impression.

    • @NhBleker

      Buck is the only good thing about that team since we already know about Buck from Halo ODST! Why the fuck wasn't he the leader of Osiris instead of Locke?! A fight between Buck and Chef would've been far more amazing and their chemistry had so much potential since both of them fought long and hard in the war!

    • @SourRobo8364
      @SourRobo8364 6 лет назад +7

      Nick Bleker that would be cool, but it would take some serious writing and motivation to justify Buck and chief fighting each other, which 343's writers don't seem to have a clue how to do either one.

    • @ShiningDarknes
      @ShiningDarknes 6 лет назад +5

      Honestly, the whole Osiris hunting Blue Team was such a shit way to tell the story. The cutting back and forth worked in Halo 2, not so much in 5. It would have been okay if it was two separate campaigns.
      But yeah ODST was another great game story wise and Buck essentially as a cameo was a waste of resources. Now I would accept Locke a bit more if 343 had made a game after halo 4 with him as the main character so we could actually get to know him. We care about Chief we have had 3.5 games to get to know him, we care about Buck we had ODST to understand his motivations/character, nobody gives a fuck about Locke who's only character traits are: ONI and "Hates Chief for some reason."

However, as with all non-game material, not everyone saw it. And even then, it's debatable as to whether or not it made anyone actually want to care about him.
