Nils Frahm's music has its own distinctive place somewhere between electronic music and classical. A gifted pianist on the one hand-he was tutored by Nahum Brodski, whose own teacher was a protégé of Tchaikovsky-he's also captivated by electronics, developing a mastery of synths and drum machines. Anyone who's seen Frahm perform will know his musical gifts are complemented by a bubbling energy and playful streak that marks him as a unique live act.
Though he's been credited on more than a dozen albums stretching back to 2005, 2013 was something of a breakthrough year for Frahm. His Spaces album, released on UK label Erased Tapes, was widely acclaimed, and made it into RA's rundown of 2013's best LPs. Spaces showcased his exceptional skill on stage. The album was built from live recordings made over a two-year period. In 2014 he's been busy touring, with a second round of North American dates coming up in November.
Stopping by RA's London office with a Juno, Fender Rhodes, drum machine and tape delay, Frahm performed two brand new songs: "All Melody" and "#2."

Anyone else vastly prefer this extremely evocative and powerful early version over the quieter tamer studio version released on the album?
seriously!
Word, definitely my favorite version
Vastly.
My favourite version is from the Montreux Jazz Festival video from 2015. The 2018 concert film and the studio recordings lack some of the intensity and raw emotion communicated in the earlier recordings.
I think they're both so different and I can't pick one over the other.
WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH THE ADS INTERSPERSED THROUGHOUT?!?!!?!?! SERIOUSLY!!!?? WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK!!????? I used to be able to watch this evocative beauty unfold gradually without horrible fucking ads ruining it every other minute. FUCK RUclips... good fucking god...
Further proof Frahm is a live mastermind. As much as I love the studio version, this is better. This is Frahm directly connecting with the music and it SHOWS
Agrees. His live performance of this feels more intuitive and visceral. It's true of most of his compositions. And his best composition, "Toilet Brushes" came to life on stage.
Mastermind
His electronic work makes me forget he is a very talented pianist.
Looks like the bassline is sequenced on a DAW and the rest played live around it. Beautiful sound and enviable gear but this is a musician on top of his game. Awesome !
I could feel the whole universe opening up before me a utterly spine-tingling spiritual experience
i didnt know what a mad genius was before seeing this guy
Melissa what is genius about this? genuine question?
i'm literally crying through this video. thankful for having music in this world.
I listened to this with my eyes closed, and I seriously forgot about reality for a moment there. I am dead sober also. Music is a powerful drug indeed
Not sober. Same effect.
Kiasmos does this also
Don't be a drama queen. Nobody likes those.
this music...i dissolve in this water, i disappear here. It represents the soul of my generation, living in immense towns, pulsing on the edge of the high-rise buildings, getting lost in rusty factories, accelerating on the highways and never finding the source of sadness or hapiness. It doesn't matter right now. Thanks Nils
IHAR Staravoitau Amen.
Olafur arnolds
Well said, like a poem.
yes 🙌
Very well selected words for this generation you're talking about.
This man is a soul diver and he takes us with him when he is going deeper and deeper ...
This is what synth‘s are made for.
Energy collaboration.
I like this more than album version
I am stil here.... LOVE THIS
This is my favourite track from the album. I love how he is just using all analogue equipment. I had the pleasure of seeing this live a few days ago. It was fucking incredible and I will never forget it.
Same, same... In February...
He is among the New Breed of Modern Composers who truly Make Soul Inspiring music.
saw this semi-god live three days ago and i couldn't help feeling like i was in haven during the gig. he was extraordinary. i just closed my eyes and felt the music giving me chills through all the spine… goose bumps all over my arms… my legs were shaking and i had butterflies in my stomach. i think that's what pure love feels like, and i felt like i was in love for the first time. with music. his music.
god bless you nils frahm.
I saw him in Glasgow at the end of May, holy mother of music it was the most sensational thing I've ever seen. 3 hours of standing with my eyes closed like you said just swaying with everyone else in the crowd. Feel privileged to have had the chance to hear him live, it's on a whole other level from RUclips.
wolwol3 The proper word is demigod.
i also thought of him as a semi/demigod before seeing him live at the funkhaus in berlin earlier this year.
it was a complete underestimation on my part...
i was in tears for the entire duration of the show, sitting there with my eyes closed, overwhelmed by emotions.
and the funny thing is, he's just playing.
wolwol3 is
Oh, gotta feel what you guys felt listening to him live... never had the chance so far... gotta create it on my own, real soon.. ) even just like this, I float somewhere out of my body listening to his wondrous universe... ~.~
Thank you for sharing your lovely experience, wolwol3 )
i love when he creates the detune by shaking the space echo, this is amazing!
Hands down one my favorite musicians of all time.
For me, the best in history.
Above Mozart, Beethoven, Royksopp, Nicolas Jaar, etc.
You really need to expand your horizons. This is mid-tier electronica.
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017What a dumb ass statement.
Trying to be all high brow and yet not give a single example oif what you gauge to be superior.
Note to the future; play this at my funeral. Play it on every anniversary of my passing. In fact, just play it every damn time you think of me. 😊
I remember when I first heard of Nils several years ago, maybe 7 or 8. I was not ready then. I am now. This electronic music thing of ours... there are no limits.
The world would be a better place for us if more people sat with Nils' music for just 5 minutes. The man is exceptional in the truest sense of the word. Thanks for the music!
I came back here from time to time in different moods. And today I came back here to cry, to feel and release through this masterpiece the pain that I hold inside. Divine purification and the whole universe is spinning around and support me.
PURE EMOTION sent through these sound waves...
GENIUS!
This song makes me cry, ever. I see in it the spirit of all mankind. It is a synthesis of the Existence. It's sacred music!
I have looked into the void... And it smiled back. Danke!
This made me cry... Play it at my funeral....
Or wedding, although nobody would like it- another reason not to have one
@@Niphredyl hahaha I can go with your flow. But hardly anyone will or can understand this.
It would be great music to make love with someone hot. 😀❤👣
Sure Sphiwe! .......... After Tears tings
Together with "Says" - this is maybe his most beautiful track so far: calm, rhythmic and of a dark, melancholic kind of beauty.
I keep listening to this every once in a while for years now and it has lost NOTHING of its striking beauty.
Grabs you, hugs you and squeezes emotion out of you.
This is one of those pieces one can listen to over and over and over and over again!!! MUCH LOVE!!!
I love the way that he lets the melody takes him to another place. He really feels and apply all his heart on what he's doing
I'll never forget hearing this live. When I imagine modern new-age music I want it to be like the music made by people like Nils Frahm and David August.
And Martin Roth ... So special
This ... the instruments. The mix. The live playing. The soundscapes!
Been struggling a lot with feelings of nostalgia (sad about the past/inability to go back and experience raw emotions again) and this has been helping conjure up those old feelings. Love it
i just love how dynamic this whole piece is.
Genius... More... Do it again... Brilliant... Your on to something so good...
Nils is a genius, and it's mind blowing that we have the chance to see such talent playing live.
I can't wait to see Nils perform again. Such a talented artist and very humble.
absolutely stunning. I (could) cry all times I hear(d) the first track, it's so melancholic but aswell happy - wonderful! A man who lives the Music, big up
Yessss, it's so smooth and warm and pleasing. Nice sounds and synths!
Variant truth artist brings concept into recognition. By and through it, we all stand as a vibration of cosmic movement. Stabilized within a singular existence; ever expanding within a confined space.
To think if we didn't need the machines of repetition and memorization to (re)create sounds of appreciation.
Thank you Nils Frahm; a new find for me and an exceptional experience.
Such beautiful words!
The best performane of "All Melody" theme!!! Laconic and 100% cosmic
This is soooo amazing and beautiful ! Nils! You are a genius!
Passion creates Art

Техногенная музыка, за которой стоит Живой Человек. Вот оно - Творение, рождённое слиянием Разумов Архитектора и Абсолюта.

My mind is blown! Powerful, intense performance! Thank you!
Super Jam: Nicolas Jaar (DARKSIDE), David August, Nils Frahm, Olafur Arnalds
HeadLinerTV Olafur Arnalds on Kiasmos version
HeadLinerTV Nah, Nicolas Jaar is waaaay behind Nils quality.
rodzeroher Nils is a genius composer while Jaar is a beat creative with no boundaries. I love em both dont get me wrong
+HeadLinerTV Nice list! Saw Darkside three times, Nils Frahm once. They were both magical but darkside was out of this world, I was in trance. Going to see David August with Ensemble tonight, also big fan.
I would add Jon Hopkins to this Jam, saw him in trouw, Amsterdam and is album Immunity is one of the best in its genre.
Ye ive heard of Hopkins but haven't really checked him out. :) I will now. How was David August? his Boiler Room set is played daily in my house :P
Yusssss! Been looking everywhere for this!
Brilliant. Saw him last wednesday in Utrecht, the netherlands for the first time. HOOKED from now on
Charlie from Always Sunny is just killin this electronic music thing
:)
Without Frank, and inhalants (maybe just a bit of inhalants), Charlie can achieve anything.
LOVE IT.....THIS JUNO 60 SYNTH SOUNDS GREAT!!!!!
So beautiful. I'm inspired.
Guys brilliant. Can't wait to see what he does.
WOOOW OMG I LOVE YOU MORE NILS!!!
So amazing electronic cosmic sound !!!!!
I wish you many years for your life, to make more and more stuff like this!
Melts my heart
Definitely the best music I've ever listened to!
A sonic wormhole. Amazing.
Amazed and inspired. He shares so much passion.
On my way home from a rugby game, Pete Tong played a bit of a song, I shazammed it, and this is where I have ended up! Feb 2 2018! I am, my brain and ears, are thankful for this music! I am feeling so uplifted and happy right now!
Thank God, I've seen him perform. Amazing. These two with Says are my favorite ones from him. Never forget.
Unbelievable mind blowing experience !!!
Beautiful
so beautiful
Very fantastic composition. It will mind for ever. ...👍👍👍👍
wow... this is an amazing version of an amazing piece of music
He is Great!!! Love his Music....
Just like "Spells" I still can't describe the beauty of this track 😍😍😍
please send more tracks with that bloody machine! please
I really like this set Nils did. I've watched a lot of them but this one for sure... definitely dig it.
la force d'un son, des notes et de ces multiples combinaisons me laisses dire que le langage est réducteur dans cette situation. Le ressenti est unique ! Ce son est magique
This feels like the David August boiler room set. Something I'm going to happily watch over and over and over for the rest of my nature life. Thank you Nils and RA
What a performance. Chills.
One word: Amazing
Beautiful !
Wooow ! I just discovered this guy and really blew my mind ! It's amazing to see how he creates such beautiful and dynamic sounds, with lots of soul and emotion, using so little equipment.
I'll dig up more of his work definitely.
This music is so good to listen too, absolutely fantastic. An artist at work knowing how to drive the music machines.
when hearing this, it feels like encoutering paradise of sounds.
10:00 he's literally reaching inside his space echo and using the tape heads as an instrument, that's insane.
Nils is using a Tape Echo, which is an analog effect in which a tape machine repeats the signal input, making an "echo" effect. You can hear this around 4:53. This is how its usually used. Inside of it, there's an actual tape looping, which Nils is manipulating with his hands around 10:00 to make some very very whacky sounds. This is very creative, and NOT how the device was supposed to be used and is the first time I've (personally) seen anyone with these use it like this. It's also somewhat of a hazard because those units are extremely expensive, and that might be bad for the machine. But he seems to do it fine, and I know less than him (he literally repairs and sets up his gear on his own, which is crazy), so whatever.
It's not hazardous whatsoever, all he is doing is slightly pushing the tape forward in order to create that "warping" sound. It's no more dangerous or creative than winding back old tapes with a pencil. It's used to create a phasing/chorusing effect in the echo unit itself! Obviously I'm drawing absolutely nothing away from this man as he is an incredibly talented musician and composer.
Yup that’s just wow
He's using the RE-201 right?
@@TheJackal1229 Yeah, close enough, it's the 501's he uses. Think he had 4 of them on stage the other day when I saw him.
just over 4 years and i stumbled onto this after hearing analoque guy..... I'm lost to a world where my mind is calm and excited at the same time, the music that tickles creativity and taught, while i sit at my day job - doing research. thank you thank you
Martin Roth did an excellent job
I have been listening to this for years and EVERYTIME I get the goose pimps!!
I am so utterly and completely glued to this amazing piece of art. This is a legacy to be reveard in 500 years to come.
Enjoy now❤️
if you ever get the chance to see him live dont even hesitate for one single split second !!! after only 2 and half minutes I was crying and felt like I could see my dead grandfather again for a second ... no words can describe ! also meeting him shortly after and giving him my beer was priceless
The buildup at 10:00 is insane so good.
stunning!!
The masterwork series continues. Exceptional
We can feel the passion just by watching! Well done! Just perfect!
Forgot to say! Very nice set of equipments!
What a trip! Goes from awesome, through epic, ending at legend 🤯🤯
10.13. I am in tears
Thankyou Nils
Awesome ! thank you!
Pure Gold🌸❤️
Brilliant piece of music. I am in heaven now.
